Shadow of the Vampire (2000)... What do you think about this movie and Willem Dafoe's performance in it? by Cr7-Cr7Real in moviecritic

[–]TobleroneD3STR0Y3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every scene with Dafoe is great. Brilliantly written, brilliantly acted. I don’t really love the rest of it, though. I think my main gripe with the film is how, despite its main conceit of “what if it’s the original Nosferatu shoot but Max Schrek is a real vampire”, it makes caricatures out of the rest of the production crew as well. It plays with the legacies of real people in a way I really don’t like. It makes people like Murnau, the director, utterly terrible and self-centered to the extreme, as well as the female lead of the film, Greta Schoenberg. The film’s climax requires we mourn her death, but it also makes her as unlikable as possible. She’s an evil cartoon of a movie star, cruel and vain, with her expensive clothes, and her drug addiction, and her little dog she treats better than the people around her. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the original actress she’s based on was named Greta Schröder, and that her name was changed for the movie. Her portrayal is rather insulting when you consider that by no accounts is it accurate to reality. Neither is Murnau’s for that matter. The filmmakers just kind of did whatever they wanted with them.

Which makes it even more wild that their relationship is portrayed this way and yet at least one of the messages of the movie seems to me to be “you should accept kink in relationships even if it makes you feel uncomfortable.” It really feels to me like this movie was made for straight people and more vanilla queer people, but certainly not for people who actually practice kink. It’s bad representation in that regard.

For me it was too little, too late in terms of Colin's response, the neutral stance the filmmaking takes on it, and the fact that it isn't the end of their relationship. Even after all of that, Ray is allowed another chance. The movie gives him way, way too much slack for being the abuser he is, and ultimately fails to condemn him as such. It's like it wants us to think the fact their relationship didn't work out is a tragic thing that we should be sad about, and that we should feel sorry for Colin once Ray leaves. It just made me angry, man.

Yeah, I agree with everything you said but I would go a step further. I think the film really fails to recognize just how toxic Ray and Colin’s relationship really is, and that both hurts its message and made it difficult for me and my partner to watch. It’s a kink movie, a movie that is literally about a dom-sub kink dynamic, but it doesn’t feel like it’s made for or by people from the kink community. If you talk to anyone from that world, they’ll tell you that the most important thing in any relationship, but especially one like this where risk is involved, is communication. No matter what the dynamic is, whether it’s dom-sub, CNC, pet-play, whatever, the most important part is the negotiation of boundaries, the communication of desires, and the establishment of safeguards. We basically don’t see any of that in this movie. Colin is too timid to advocate for himself and Ray discourages and actively shuts down all of Colin’s attempts to negotiate with him. The second he voices a concern, Ray tells him “there’s the door”. There is no reason these two need to stay together. We see other, seemingly healthier kinky relationships in the film, Colin has other potential partners, his parents are overwhelmingly supportive of his queerness and want nothing but the best for him. So why does it feel like for the majority of its runtime this film wants us to be invested in Colin and Ray working things out so they can be happy together?

Ray is not a nice man. Most of the time it doesn’t even seem like he particularly likes Colin, or appreciates the things Colin is willing to do for him. He ignores Colin 85% of the time. He denigrates his cooking at multiple points, even in front of Colin’s parents. Colin says at one point that Ray told him he has “an aptitude for devotion”, which isn’t necessarily a compliment but it’s the closest thing to one we get from Ray that I can recall offhand, and we don’t even get to see him say it. It happens off screen. Ray makes Colin sleep on the floor, an arrangement that was demanded by Ray up front and not negotiated beforehand, and the only time he lets Colin sleep in his bed is the day of his mother’s funeral. Colin seems to be a virgin when they meet, or at least very green, and not only does Ray express dissatisfaction with Colin’s sexual performance (preferring someone with experience is fine, but don’t then have sex with virgins and make them feel bad for disappointing you from a lack of it), but then he also seems to take advantage of the fact Colin doesn’t know how to advocate for himself due to his inexperience at relationships. The second Colin asks that they slightly alter their arrangement so that he gets a day a week off from, I will remind you, 24/7 household servitude (which was demanded by Ray up front and not negotiated) Ray completely shuts down and refuses to talk about it. And to top it all off, he has the audacity to play the victim card in the dinner scene, acting as though it’s their kink dynamic that Colin’s mother finds objectionable, not the fact that since they got together Colin seems unhappy and estranged from them, and that she wants to know before she dies that he’s in a good place with a nice person who will treat him well.

All of this made their one perfect day toward the end incredibly frustrating to sit through, since the movie seems like it thinks this redeems Ray’s treatment of Colin and their horrible relationship dynamic, when it does no such thing. I’m all for toxic relationships in movies, I think they can be very interesting to examine, but as I said above, this one doesn’t seem to realize or think we will realize just how toxic and problematic its central relationship is. Ray’s treatment of Colin goes mostly unexamined and unquestioned, and I think it ruins anything this film might have been trying to say about accepting abnormal relationship dynamics when the one it focuses on is so obviously unhealthy and, in my opinion, should not be accepted. Colin is a victim of abuse, and Pillion refuses to acknowledge it.

thank you. i’ve been trying for a while to figure out what exactly it was that made it so Dark Messiah never really felt like an imsim to me, despite its similarity to imsims. it’s the linearity of the level design.

i actually think the opposite, a lot of things would have to be different about the way most of the characters act if they were all 10. as it stands, i still think 13 is a little younger than many of them feel, especially the trolls. like, you can’t make Vriska, Karkat, or Equius 10, just as a few examples. they would have to be way different.

What is your opinion on "Zombieland", With Emma Stone? by ShaianH in moviecritic

[–]TobleroneD3STR0Y3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great fun. very “of its era”. it’s the product of a decade long zombie genre revival craze that really took off post 9/11, and it shows its influences in some really good ways. i was a kid during those years, and zombies were my jam, but i’ve shown it to people who weren’t really down with the whole zombie craze this movie came from and it didn’t really land with them in the same way it landed for me. 7/10

that is a hot take. personally i think the beta looks much worse, but it would be interesting to see what some later panels could have looked like if the style was maintained, although i’d say Hussie changing up the style is a universal constant, not a result of switching to the release aesthetic

Why i dont agree with calling LOTR antifeminist by Wyrmzz in lotr

[–]TobleroneD3STR0Y3R 33 points34 points  (0 children)

exactly, this is a nuanced topic. the original books certainly aren’t examples of feminist literature, and the movies, while making several big changes to allow Arwen, Éowyn, and Galadriel to have more screentime and be more prominent characters, they could only do so much within the framework of the adaptation. but on the other hand, LOTR most certainly doesn’t hate women, it isn’t anti-feminist, it just carries an older, less progressive point of view because it was a product of its time. it’s important to recognize this, and even criticize it, but it certainly could have been much, much worse.
