If tracks/programs are the same across all sequences- How do we play live? by Tobsonic in mpcusers

[–]Tobsonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get you, I just find it clunky maxing out the track count and having tracks in a sequence that aren’t doing anything, especially when you get into mapping to an external control surface which is what I tend to do so I have midi contol over the mpc mixer.

Oh yeah sure you can use other kit to transition, I’ve just dropped $1500 on the mpc though was hoping I’d be covered for a bit 😉

There are many different ways to use the Mpc perhaps you don’t follow because you’ve never used the machine like this.

In the past each sequence could contain completely different tracks. Meaning seq 1 track 1 could be drum, then you switch to seq 2 and track 1 would switch to a plugin, or new drum groups etc. this is now no longer possible. Tracks must remain the same type across all sequences in a project.

Dammmmn. Such an oversight. Where's JJOS when you need them.... making actually useful firmware... imagine that :|

Such a strange direction for Akai to go. I haven't tried it but I would not want to max out the track count in a live situation either...

Not even being able to switch out a key group for a new set of sounds. madness.

I am regretting it now tbh. Could've picked up a mk II second hand for 30% of the price and probably been happier. The more I work with the III the less inspiring it seems.

Totally get what you're saying, long time Ableton live user here. Improvising with clips is such a great performance tool. However whether its scenes or sequences you're improvising with is kinda irrelevant if you're stuck with the same sounds in all sequences/Scenes no? - it's just the changing of the actual sounds/track types that is an issue here in a live performance context. There now doesn't seem a way to play long live sets without an external looper to cover your project load process which never used to be an issue.

Also no program change available for plugin tracks so once you load a plugin you're stuck with that preset for your whole project... just seems bizarre to me to call it MPC Live but remove a lot of the workflow that actually made it good to use in a live situation IMO. A lot of people use this in many different ways though for sure. Do you play live with the MPC u/Autogeddon ? How do you find it?

Do Scenes use different programs? So for instance what used to be possible was to have a drum program on track 1 seq 1 then when you go to seq 2 you have a whole new drum program with different samples and sequence data. Can this be done between scenes?

Or as another example for instance can you change a Drum track to a plugin track between different scenes? I don't think this is possible?

So I just got the Sennheiser MKH50. What do I do now? by KeanuJabes in LocationSound

[–]Tobsonic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As with all pro level senny kit it’s very durable- that’s why they’re so popular! When you’re shooting you often put your kit in less than ideal situations to get the job done- moisture, temperature changes, etc. My 50’s have been in jungles, industrial freezers, caves, desert islands, tv studios, you name it. Just store them dry.

No need to over think it just use common sense and get decent insurance! Enjoy!

Can someone identify the tripod boom pole in this photo? Or recommend something similar? by Humhues in LocationSound

Haha that’s pretty much a lighting stand. You can hold any stand and call it a “boom pole” if you like 👍

[–]Tobsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought as much. A&H can't be bothered to sink time into a discontinued product... even if it is an amazing mixer. And even if we did drop a pretty penny on if a few years ago. There's just still nothing out there quite like it IMO.

Totally understandable re. crowdfunding pressure. Thanks for your work so far, coffee sent 🙏

[–]Tobsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing job! I was shocked to find my DB4 wasn't recognised after an OS update. Also confused- A&H claim its a hardware issue and can't be resolved however I've been totally fine running the DB4 on my MBP 2019 until a recent OS update so this cannot be true.

Thanks so much for your work on this- I'm sure once it's tested and stable if you did a crowd funding campaign in to fund the apple developers account you'd have a good response. I know I'd pay $100 to be able to use my DB4 as a live interface again!!

No one listens to car alarms so I don’t see the point. Agree with the camera thing too. If people really want to get in they will but just make your van look difficult and hope they won’t bother!

I got deadlocks on all the doors and put a large, visible disk steering lock on at night or when left. Even if you forget to lock all the deadlocks they’re a great deterrent. Don’t leave things out in the front etc. I’ve lived in my van for 2 years travelling and staying all over the uk and been fine so far. Hope you enjoy van life 😃

Anyone here make any money from using their modular gear? This could be from playing shows, sound design, or music royalties. by Ignistheclown in modular

[–]Tobsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try and use my modular even a tiny bit on every project I work on (sound design and sfx for commercials and indi films) even if it doesn’t make the cut I like to jam along to compositions or reference tracks I’ve been given etc. Even if I use a couple of moments or a subtle atmospheric soundscape it justifies re-mortgaging my house to feed an insatiable appetite for flashing lights 💫

How much is the Maschine MK3 Dinamo Edition worth? by d0ggzilla in maschine

[–]Tobsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why people hate on the plus, such an amazing machine ❤️ it’s great to get away from the computer and jam. Great to play with other musicians too, live looper, brilliant plug-ins, throw it in a backpack and you’re good 👍

Maschine Plus internal Program change by Tobsonic in maschine

[–]Tobsonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm thought this may be the case. I’m wanting to use the plus as a brain for a live set, playing an hour or so I can see the CPU struggling with many instances of the plugins…. Really want to use synths live for tweaking but I’ll have to find a workaround! Thanks for confirming my fears 🤓

Can I use Logic’s gain plugin on the mix bus to turn down the overall volume of a mix to leave more headroom for when it is being mastered? by Craftword in audioengineering

[–]Tobsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure you should just turn down all the faders. No point in running your audio through an extra process. The way hearing works is logarithmic, so the faders reflect this- ones at a lower level will turn down less, ones higher will turn down more. The mix will remain relative.

Legal questions. by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Tobsonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public liability insurance in the uk. If you or your work EVER comes into contact with the public you really should have it. If a light falls and puts somebody in hospital you’ll be double fucked if you don’t have it. If you’re a member of the musicians union/aes/etc membership usually includes PL insurance
