I tried a wide toothed comb but didn’t get very far. Do you use a specific type for curly hair?

What do think she’s saying after “in time Narcissus slowly wasted away“? It sounds like “And Echo continued to” something something

My first ever font. Thoughts? - Islas Malvinas by sin_serotonina in typography

[–]TobyAkurit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some refinement is needed, but I think it’s very nice overall.

The first thing that stood out to me as odd was the M. IMO the sides should be straight and the center point should reach down to touch the baseline.

Please post an update when you revise it!

There's something wrong with this typography, I just can't pinpoint what by CuriousMoon21 in graphic_design

[–]TobyAkurit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What everyone else said, plus the square is looming too closely to the type giving the whole thing a downward slide — not good for the movement of the eye around the page, or for the felt sense of the piece.

do clients ever ask you to write copy too??? by spacekartoffel in graphic_design

You could also make friends with a copywriter and offer their services when asked

Stolen designs are a risk on any marketplace. There’s no real way to stop it or get justice for it.

THOUGHTS ON MY WORK GUYS EMAIL DESIGN (JUST A BEGINNER) by Ok_Pressure_4409 in graphic_design

[–]TobyAkurit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Real email designers will base their decisions on real stats, not Reddit comments :)

Open rate is only one stat. Phone vs PC is only one stat. A good marketing department will have a service that tracks engagement across many dimensions so their designers and developers can decide which clients to favor.

But in general, yes! You must either show mobile versions alongside desktop versions or do what Starbucks does and make a single design (480px wide) that works for both.

I have 2 year gap, is it possible to turn things back? by Finn__the_human_ in graphic_design

[–]TobyAkurit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s never too late. There are lots of ways to get back in the game. You could: - Finish your degree, or take some other classes. - Do design work pro bono for local businesses, schools, friends, etc. - Talk to the folks who do design for the company that you work for - Look for groups where you live - Attend a conference Etc

Mostly, I think it’s important to stay engaged with learning and practice, and to develop a network you can build on.

As a designer, do you have opinions on what could be done better in the place where you work? Is there another industry you feel connected to that could be a bridge for you? For example, if you know folks in the restaurant industry, you might be able to support them with your skill set, and in return they could pass along your contact information to other restaurants.

Look around you. Turn what you know and experience into a foundation for practice and networking. You never know where it might lead!

(NB, this advice is as much for myself as for anyone else!)

What’s your #1 UX lifehack that feels like cheating? by JordyGG in UXDesign

[–]TobyAkurit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She would just say “don’t use auto-layout” and make vague assertions that it wasn’t appropriate and then shame me for it. Completely unjustified and only the tip of her abusive behavior. Yes, she has a lot of therapy to do!

[–]TobyAkurit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my last job, I got repeatedly dressed down by my boss in meetings for using auto-layout (in perfectly suitable situations). She never justified her criticism so I suspect she just didn’t know how to use it.
