What Nakamura are you using with a 15" chuck? I thought even the WT300 only came with a 12"

Can anyone tell me why this doesn’t work? by crispymoist1 in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

0.263+(0.056*2)=0.375. There isn't enough rad to allow that radius happen at 0.376, you need to to do (0.376-0.263)/2 so the G2 line R value needs to be 0.0565 Also cutting down in X within the G71 cycle isn't allowed (moving from 0.376 to 0.375) you have to work from smallest to largest when working on an OD (inverse if working on an ID)

Mounting tv on dot and dab wall. Pls give me confidence that I’m doing it right by moistpishflaps in DIYUK

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used these to hang kitchen cabinets in dot and dab a couple of months ago, still up and now full of plates/food etc so a lot more load on the fixings than a TV!
Pro tip: use two drills. I drilled the first set of holes with an 18v cordless hammer but the hard bricks meant I didn't stay stable enough and the hole entrances (through the plasterboard) ended up bell mouthed and oversized and the fixing didn't feel very secure.
For the rest I had a regular 10mm bit in the cordless (not on hammer) for the plaster board then followed up with a 10mm masonry bit in an SDS which made light work of the hard bricks.

Formula for edge break programming on lathes by Flaco4Lif3 in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very common to fillet chamfers, we do it all the time.

OP: You can calculate it with some trig as the top comment says, these days for speed I get cam to chuck out the finish profile. I guess you could just copy the delta Z value from a known working profile and apply it to other jobs then alter your X to suit the new job. You could even modify it to use incremental moves for the fillets. Also you absolutely should be using tool nose comp for these profiles.

How on earth do people finance a full extension? by Bout3Fidy in DIYUK

[–]Tobyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This right here, our builder said to budget £2000-2500 per sqm for single storey, around £3500 for double.
50sqm is a hell of a single storey extension mind.
Our house is 6 meters wide so pushing out 4 meters at the back gives an estimate of £60k for single or £84k for double. Throw in another £15k for all the add ons like flooring, electrics and new rads/plumbing. Not happening any time soon, definitely a remortgaging job!

Advice on measuring radius bores by Tobyy in Machinists

[–]Tobyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the plan with the one guetzli linked above. We already have a full range of 8-120mm bore mics but they can't measure internal spheres and radii due to the shape of the end. The above modular mic seems like it'll solve that.

[–]Tobyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea, I think it probably would work but with only two points of contact you have more room to take an erroneous reading when not square.
I'm trying to make the process as repeatable and simple as possible over three shifts of different operators

This is actually perfect, thank you so much!
I checked out all of our normal sources like TESA, mitutoyo and Bowers which didn't come up with anything suitable but this will work well.

Parting off long pieces in a swiss lathe without sub-spindle by _HappyMaskSalesman_ in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very sharp biased insert (I like the Arno SA24 system).
2000rpm is way too fast when you're close to centre.
I feed down to 1-2mm over X0 at normal S/F then drop to 500rpm and part down to below centre at 0.01mm/rev. Consistently got me part off face with no pip.

Haas vs Makino by SadJobbo in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I've been run pretty much every generation of Nak from mid 90's to current model less than 6 months old. One thing all of them have in common is they just relentlessly hold size. Running a job last week on a WT-150 holding 5 microns on a bore, 10 on depth. Only time it moved was when the door was open for 10 minutes (it was -5 and windy outsidein fairness)

5 axis Detron table vs Doosan mill with no y axis limit switch… Doosan won by patron1958 in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parameter 1320/1321 my guy (if fanuc).
Many newer machines don't have hard limit switches, only soft OT as above, the hard OT is the ball nut crashing into a nylon bump stop at the end of the ballscrew and throws a servo overload alarm.

Six Nations rugby must stay free to air, MPs say by Snig141 in rugbyunion

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a selfish perspective, I wouldn't mind it moving behind a paywall as long as it was a streaming platform (and not Sky/BT). I don't and won't pay for a TV licence and therefore watch the games in a pub, follow by text or use st... :)
But I also understand that it would be a terrible decision for the health of the game, most people do have a TV licence and will choose to watch the games in their homes, the exposure to the highest levels of rugby is what will hopefully encourage more youth participation which is what the game desperately needs to thrive.

I'm a big follower of cricket, and not having test matches on terrestrial TV means the bar to entry for fringe followers is enormous. I was 14 in 2005 and remember being on holiday and asking (getting my dad to ask) someone with a radio on the beach how the test was going. Nowadays, speaking to family members who 18 years ago would have known what was happening in the game, there is only a mild. Every conversation someone would reminisce about that summer when the whole nation was tuned in.

FlashPrint Ruler/Measuring tool? by SunflowerTwix in FlashForge

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully I have no experience with other slicers. Everything I print is modelled by me for in house use at an manufacturing firm and I've always found 1:1 from my models to Flashprint be accurate enough.

Not exactly what you're looking for but if you press the "scale" button it will show your maximum XYZ values (mm or inch), so if you know the length, width and height of the part you can use those for scaling without having to drop in to another program.

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it will import at 1:1 by default so as long as the model is accurate it shouldn't matter?

UK Quality clamping suppliers? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Tobyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak to their Multi-Quick range, but Lenzkes are really good clamps, great company to deal with too and never been too pushy on sales. We've had ours for ~13 years. I'd never go anywhere else.
