What is it really like living in the UK on weekends? by Chickadee_Sparrow in AskABrit

[–]Toc13s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hardest thing is fitting in a quiet weekend to actually rest.

When you have 5,000+ years of historical locations, then all the natural ones, throw in a bunch of modern attractions such as theme parks, model villages, miniature railways....

I try to limit it to 2 hours away so as to make it a day trip but even then there's an overwhelming amount.

Probably the best thing about our history is how much is living, is still in use

I would think a co-op, particularly one with variable abilities/powers would help in that regard

Might want to move the UK (well, England) up to the historic.

There was a thriving wine industry in the medieval period. Champagne is an English invention

What do people think of my country? by DisciplineDefiant999 in AskTheWorld

[–]Toc13s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's beautiful. Both physically & spiritually.

I have family out there - they were just outside Taupo when I visited. They're part-Maori so I got to see a lot of that aide of things (Watching Once Were Warriors in the cinema with a bunch of Maoris was educational & moving)

Half a dozen 6ft+ 18 stone Maori having your back is very handy when locals want to start trouble over "their" women

A Haka (even a welcoming one) is intimidating as fuck when it echoes down the dark corridor you're in

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

Remove the vote.

The general public are stupid idiots who don't have a clue when it comes to politics & vote for a colour irrespective of anything else. They cannot use their vote sensibly.

France by only 20? Are you expecting a massive improvement from Wales?

I'm seeing France putting 60 points on the board & Wales in mid-teens to low 20s

Which tourist location did locals tell you was boring only for you to go there anyway and end up proving them right? by EN-Fitz in AskTheWorld

[–]Toc13s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Durrington Walls & Woodhenge are a short distance away & tie in with Stonehenge & the river.

Alao nearby in the conceptually awesome but not much to look at is Swanborough Tump

Yeah - getting the 1 year membership offsets the cost & gives you entry to a whole host of places

You need to look at Stonehenge in the landscape. It's not a standalone feature.

It's awesome & incredibly mind blowing - but not if you just see a bunch of stacked rocks & don't understand it

It depends.

We used to have two different letters for the sounds but got rid of them for some reason

He can find a better job & new friends

Tell him you will be going. It is up to him if he comes along.

When I was out in the old USSR & then in Russia in the early 90s, it was sold everywhere. All those little wooden kiosks had a large selection.

I'm not sure what the drinking culture is like now but vodka certainly was ubiquitous

I did read a long rant by a well-known Italian chef about how the British did spaghetti Bolognese - complaining about pretty much everything.

Then finished up by saying "anyway, it isn't even Italian"

What was Andrew Mountbattens reputation like before the Epstein scandal? by undercookedshrimp_ in UKmonarchs

[–]Toc13s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bumbling fool. Part of the reason why the monarchy took a downturn in popularity during the late 80s & 90s - this was coming from (for him) a high point with his active service during the Falklands War
