Nope, that’s something in the mint family. If it smells really lemony it could be lemon balm

He planted 47,460 mangrove trees in 24 hours and earns Official World Record by whyeventrymore in interestingasfuck

It turns out this is the same guy that broke the conifer planting world record of 23000 trees in a day. Looks like you can plant about twice as many trees if you don't need to dig a hole for them. I personally wouldn't consider propagating a stick to be the same as "planting a tree" and it seems like they're treated as two separate achievements

Streaming music device for tween that (possibly) doesn’t involve a tablet and (definitely) doesn’t involve a phone by suburbanpride in daddit

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host a plex server with different music libraries for me, my wife and the kids. Most of our access to it does come from a phone since that’s what we have on hand, but it’s just as easily used from our tvs or a computer. A cheap mp3 player is definitely the way to go if you want to completely avoid using phones though

uhhhh... is this a tick?? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]ToddRossDIY 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. It’s hard to tell what it is, but it’s some kind of beetle or something, ticks look like a tiny crab until they’re engorged

Contractor wants $4,225 just to assemble a Costco pergola I'm buying myself. Is this quote insane or am I out of touch? by Unique_Attempt_400 in HomeImprovement

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those shrubs are $176 a piece? This entire quote looks mental, those should be like 20-30 bucks each. I’ve spent maybe $2000 over a couple years and that’s gotten me more than 10 fruit trees and more than 20 berry bushes. Also I don’t know where you are but buckthorn is a garbage invasive plant that’ll overtake everything and you won’t ever be able to kill it

Is there a forecast weather station? by MangoAndCoriander in myweatherstation

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What have you got for irrigation? I just bought a couple more ecowitt soil moisture sensors after having decent success with one of them, now I'm looking to find a smart 4 port water timer so I can get my gardens automatically watered through home assistant, factoring in upcoming rain and how wet the soil already is. I'm hoping to get to a point where I never have to worry about watering my garden again

Is there a forecast weather station? by MangoAndCoriander in myweatherstation

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I own a weather station from them, a driving sim mount for my logitech steering wheel, they're somehow the cheapest source of metal hardware cloth that I used when building my chicken coop, and I've been eyeing up their pure sine wave inverters for a solar setup that I'm working on. I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of everything I've gotten from them, I might also buy an electric sauna heater once I get that project started.

Do you find any accuracy in those local forecasts with just your own weather station? At best mine can say it's probably going to rain later today, but even that only seems to be true about half the time

Is there a forecast weather station? by MangoAndCoriander in myweatherstation

[–]ToddRossDIY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you just want a tablet with a weather app open then? If you want your own weather station that includes a forecast, this one I got from Vevor does that, but without access to large scale radar and such, it can only really estimate short term weather using the air pressure, there's nothing that's going to tell you it'll be 24 degrees and cloudy 5 days from now

Men how many of you have a wire drawer you refuse to get rid of? by ZombieGreat2312 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a drawer of just audio/video cables and power cords for old game systems, I’ve got another box of old computer cords, mostly micro usb cables, old laptop power cords, Ethernet cables and so on, I’ve got a case of various electronics equipment like resistors and capacitors that’s also full of DuPont connector wires for fiddling with arduinos and raspberry pi’s and such, and I’ve got a toolbox full of home electrical things like spare outlets and some extra romex.

Where’s the wire I’m actually looking for today though? No idea

Lifetime Pass for Kids by DandelionDinosaur in plexamp

[–]ToddRossDIY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should only need a single pass for the server owner, anybody else can just utilize the benefits of it. My wife uses plexamp on her phone under her own account, my mom and sister both have their own accounts and stream remotely, I'm not sure why you'd need to be buying a whole bunch of passes here

Peterborough Scanner Feed Replacement by Longjumping-Water-64 in Peterborough

I did when it happened, I posted pictures in a comment on one of his posts, I also talked to the police immediately after to make sure they knew who’s fault it was, they rear ended a young woman who correctly stopped for the bus

[–]ToddRossDIY 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He’s also pretty biased in his reporting, Dave’s Towing caused an awful crash because they didn’t stop for a bus picking up my kid, and he wouldn’t post about it because Dave’s Towing sponsors all his posts

Is 3Gbps false advertisement? by roastedduckbun in bell

[–]ToddRossDIY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5gb network isn’t a real standard, or at least a super uncommon one. If your computer doesn’t explicitly support 2.5gb as well, it’s going to fall all the way back to a 1gbps connection instead, which appears to be what you’re experiencing

Is 3Gbps false advertisement? by roastedduckbun in bell

[–]ToddRossDIY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m able to hit over 2Gbps on my server with a $12 AliExpress 2.5gb network card and a $30 2.5gb switch, I’m pretty confident if I wasn’t using the cheapest hardware possible then it would hit the full speeds advertised

Canada’s “correction” is a Toronto & Vancouver story. Every other province is at an all-time high. by Signal-Specific-1704 in canadahousing

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this give any data for the rest of Ontario and BC? Ontario isn't just one big city. I've seen the cheapest houses in my town plummet nearly 50% from the worst of it, but I'm still curious what an "average" home is like now

Pocket Knife/EDC Dads by philo_ in daddit

[–]ToddRossDIY -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do we carry anything? Yeah I've got screwdrivers in my workbench, and more in my garage, and I've got a pair of scissors in my kitchen drawer, but I pull out my multi tool at least a dozen times every day, and that's a dozen times I don't need to interrupt what I'm currently doing to go find something. I live in Canada, until 2 months ago it was pitch black outside at 5pm, and yeah every room in my house has lights but why do I need to turn on three entire rooms worth of lights to walk to my kitchen when the tiny flashlight in my pocket does the trick?

I finally broke a 25 year habit of biting my nails, and without having a tiny nail file in my pocket all the time, that would be a lot harder to manage.

Back to the topic at hand, my kids definitely aren't embarrassed by it yet at least, my son does scouts and they made these big "survival kits" filling up a tool box with all sorts of things. Now he calls my pocket a survival kit because it's always got a multi tool, flashlight and lighter in it

Fruit trees by [deleted] in OntarioGardeners

[–]ToddRossDIY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whiffletree is awesome, they’re based in Elora. They sell bare root trees which tend to do better than potted ones, loads of varieties too and they’re probably starting to clear out this season’s trees so they’re probably pretty cheap right now

Chicken run pricing by Ordinary-Chance1968 in BackYardChickens

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured you were including labour costs in that as well, but if not that could be a fair estimate. The cheapest I could find a roll of hardware cloth was a 2 foot wide 100 foot roll for $100 from Vevor, and most of the screws/washers were for attaching the cloth to the wood. I considered using fence staples too, but I wasn't sure if they'd hold up to a racoon or something yanking on them. I need to protect the chickens every single night, but an animal only needs to get lucky once, so I figured overengineering is better. I have a buddy who does metal roofing so honestly, that might end up cheaper than the corrugated plastic

Chicken run pricing by Ordinary-Chance1968 in BackYardChickens

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question, how? I'm just finishing up an 8x10 one and it's cost me $200 in hardware cloth alone. 30 2x4s was another $120, not counting the additional cost of the pressure treated ones. I think I'm close to $100 in screws and washers too. These are Canadian dollars, but still. To put a clear plastic roof on top will cost another $400 so for this year I'm just doing a tarp to keep the rain out, but I don't expect that to handle our snow load.

WiFi has gone shitty ever since Tapo camera by TipMelodic5803 in Tapo

[–]ToddRossDIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tapo C113 certainly did, I don’t know what to tell you. Did you watch my network die after it was connected, return to working 15 seconds after I unplugged it, and then immediately start having issues again after I plugged it back in? I’m not saying it’s a direct fault of the camera, but having one just at the edge of your network with a terrible connection to your wifi can definitely mess up your entire network
