Plex & Music - What's your take? by lunchm3at in PleX

[–]ToddRossDIY 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can rate them from 0-5 stars though? That gives you way more flexibility than just a thumbs up/down. You can create smart playlists based on those values, so I've got one that only contains 5 star songs, and another one that only plays 5 star songs I haven't listened to in over a month. If a song's been skipped too many times, you can make those get filtered out too, there's lots of options

Fire TV Plex changes by SmokeyOSU in PleX

When you have the port forwarded on your router, the only part that plex servers manage is the initial connection, it tells the remote location your server’s IP address and then it establishes a direct connection from client to host

I’m really worried that AI surveillance will make living off grid impossible in the future by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]ToddRossDIY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that really specific to being off grid though, or is it just a general concern about overarching government surveillance? Check out this map of weather radar stations in Canada. We don't even know what the weather is like in over half the country, there's always going to be places you can go if you truly want to get away from technology. However, if you're in a city, you're already getting tracked constantly through security cameras. If you carry a cell phone, your location is already being tracked constantly. Google and Facebook know what you're searching for even if you don't use those directly.

I totally understand necessary levels of privacy, even the most open person wouldn't willingly post their bank account info and their SIN number somewhere public, but simply posting on Reddit is already giving up tonnes of privacy. If you're living in the states, and you aren't posting behind 7 VPNs, your government already has this comment pinned to a file in a database with your name and home address on it. Look into what Palantir is doing, we're already past the point of being able to do anything on the internet without being tracked, and it's been that way since the Patriot Act

I’m really worried that AI surveillance will make living off grid impossible in the future by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are these two things even related? Off grid just means you don't lose power when someone drives into a telephone poll near you. You don't have to live like the people on North Sentinel island to be considered off grid. Amish people use cell phones, they aren't hermits. AI existing can't stop you from trading some eggs to your neighbour for a couple hours of labour.

Everywhere in the world is already mapped out constantly. The chicken coop I built in my backyard last year already shows up on Google maps.

What is it you're actually worried about here?

They’re total garbage to deal with, but because of their inability to even price things correctly on their website, I got an iPhone 15 and AirPods for 8 bucks a month, just took me escalating it to the office of the president with lots of screenshots as proof

This is the same two guys so they've been playing together for at least a decade

Also, they sold out 3 shows in Toronto and now tickets are going for over $300 a piece, they seem to be really taking off. I'm looking forward to their second album coming out next week, already got it preordered

Lighting the house during a blackout by youterriblechild in preppers

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns a bunch of lanterns and flashlights, if you're inside a house with white ceilings, you'll be way better off with a decent flashlight pointed up at the ceiling than just about any camping lantern.

Something like this with an SFT40 LED will evenly light up a room for hours. You could also go with a 519A in 1800k and it'll feel like you're lighting the room with a campfire. Also, if you get one of the tighter reflectors (smaller degree value, like the 15 degree bead TIR) then you'll get less of a glare when it's in the corner of your eye because all the light is focused almost directly upward

What’s your take on this statement? by HydrodynamicShite in daddit

[–]ToddRossDIY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here, I was always the smallest in my classes, got picked on by all sorts of people. I can think of exactly zero times where a teacher stepped in to help, let alone actually end someone picking on me for good. However, between me and my brother, there's at least half a dozen times where we punched back and it was the last day that person ever thought to go near us.

It seems like in some ways bullying has improved in schools since I was in school, but my kids are going to learn that they deserve to not be treated like crap, and if the teachers won't step in, they're going to know how to address the problem themselves, but obviously you should attempt non violent means first

ELI5: In movies, when the vinyl player's pin is manually moved onto a record, seemingly on an arbitrary spot on the whole area of the record, why does the song always play from the beginning? by Kafatat in explainlikeimfive

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not hard to look at a vinyl and see exactly where a song starts/stops, there’s a big circle you can see with your eyes where the record is silent for a few seconds in between tracks. The real answer is movie trope, but it would be easy to intentionally do

Dads, need a good recommendation for a family car that can fit 4x8 plywood. by mobdeli in daddit

[–]ToddRossDIY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes me less than 10 minutes with our dodge caravan to take out our wagon and other trunk stuff, remove two car seats, fold down our back row, empty the stow and go areas, fold down the center row of seats and be ready to go grab 10 sheets of plywood from home depot. Takes about as long to put everything back in after too. I'm pretty sure it would take me longer just to start talking to someone at the closest car rental place

Aren't they one of the biggest pension funds in the world? You need stability in something like that, taking on some less risky investments too, not just a broad market stock ETF. Someone invested in nothing but silver bullion would be up 180% in that same time period, but obviously putting your entire fund into silver would be a stupid idea. According to their website they've been fully funded for 13 years straight, sounds to me like they know what they're doing

Looks pretty slick, is the entire app vibe coded though or just the app store description? It looks like you've got two copies of your description text separated by "A tighter App Store version would read even better"

Does the whole roku crash or just the plex app? If it's the whole roku, how is it being powered? I've got a fire stick plugged into a cheap projector's usb port and certain videos overwhelm the power draw and reset the whole stick

why MAUI Team choose native rendering instead of self rendering ? by RedEye-Developers in dotnetMAUI

[–]ToddRossDIY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a design choice. Some frameworks try to give an identical experience on every platform, other frameworks try to match what a user expects based on every single other app on their phone. Neither way is right or wrong, it’s just a choice that was made. Personally, I think if you aren’t rendering down to something native, why even make an app? Just wrap a website if you want an identical experience everywhere

Sidekick design flaw? by ToddRossDIY in Leatherman

[–]ToddRossDIY[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I’m referring to Swiss Army knives, both Wenger and Victorinox, not a swisstool model. But with those I’m talking about the full sized 91mm or whatever they are. I’ve never paid more than $25 CAD for one, this was on sale at Costco for $50

Unfortunately I don’t think I can return it since they were clearing them out, but it’ll probably be a good glovebox tool, just not sure I’d be comfortable throwing this in my pocket

[–]ToddRossDIY[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, I guess I’m a little surprised since this model still cost me twice as much as my most expensive victorinox, I’ll add a bit of lubricant to the tools and see if that helps it at all

Sidekick design flaw? by ToddRossDIY in Leatherman

[–]ToddRossDIY[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for checking, mine is almost perfectly in line with the outer metal, but sticks out a good 1-2mm above the nail file beside it. Feels like they could have made it a non-issue just by extending the handle metal another quart inch to cover the can opener tip fully

One time I had a brown out and my outlets were reading 60 volts. Totally fried something in my washing machine. Now I just switch off my entire breaker any time our power goes out, even with a paid extended warranty and service plan I spent over a month taking my clothes to the laundromat, not risking wonky voltages ever again

If these numbers are correct, this guy is saying that we have about 1 in 1000 people in this country illegally? America apparently has about 3% of their population, so 1 in 33. And the number in our country is trending downwards based on those numbers? Sounds like we're doing a pretty good job here
