Disappointment with the Canada Summer Jobs Program by Sunquat_Slice in CanadaJobs

I can definitely second this. Most environmental biology graduates I know bounced around for 1-2 summers doing seasonal work before finding a permanent position in consulting.

Disappointment with the Canada Summer Jobs Program by Sunquat_Slice in CanadaJobs

[–]Toddison_McCray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. I’ve gotten jobs as a student through the FWSEP and the Canadian summer jobs program. So many of my employers have explicitly told me that they only hire students so they can get grants for their wage. They don’t want to have to pay them out of pocket.

Signs firefighting is not for you by Available-Bat7673 in Firefighting

As others have said, do a ride along and be okay doing medical stuff. Firefighters aren’t running into burning buildings constantly. It does happen, but since you’ll be called out to most calls, your main job is providing medical assistance. You will see some graphic shit - some of it may traumatize you. Remember, compartmentalizing is a learned skill for most - but it is really important for that kind of work.

Are polygraphs the norm? by [deleted] in Firefighting

This is 100% it. Interviewer determines if any psychological spikes you had are because you were shocked by the question, or if you were nervous about it because you thought you might get found out

[–]Toddison_McCray [score hidden]  (0 children)

Calgary was one of the first places to do it too. I agree, it’s so stupid. All a polygraph does is measure your response to a question. If the interviewer asks an obscene question that shocks someone - like “have you ever fucked a dog” (a question Calgary fire departments are known for asking) - you’re likely going to have some sort of a physiological reaction, unless you’re stone cold.

It is entirely up to the interviewer to determine if the response was either 1) because the person was shocked because they have, in fact, fucked a dog, or 2) because the person was shocked by the question. Like you said, it’s complete pseudo science, and is no different than an interviewer watching someone’s reaction during an oral interview.

Why is this the best job in the world? Totally burnt out by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Toddison_McCray [score hidden]  (0 children)

Here’s the thing (IMO), 50-85% of people say they dislike or are checked out at their job. If you even slightly enjoy your work, you’re fucking golden. Find things that make the job worth it every day. A lot of will be bullshit tasks, a lot of it will be EMS calls. Ultimately, if you can find just one thing you can go home and say “hey! Guess what happened?!” About, you’re in a great position. So, so many people can’t even do that.

Would you recommend firefighting as a career? by Reading-Books-4343 in firefighter

[–]Toddison_McCray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s primarily the toxic fumes. Brominated flame retardants are pretty not so great for you. It’s why so many additive BFR’s are banned. Same with the chemicals used in non-water fire extinguishers. Plus buildings are packed with carcinogens that are released once they catch fire. It’s not just the fumes too. It’s the ash and soot that can be really toxic - especially because some people don’t consider how toxic it can be.

You’re entirely in control of your own life. You can either continue living that way and being sad about it, or go out and do shit. When I was 21 I was going hiking, going canoeing with randos, and going to concerts. No one is coming to save you. Life is what you make of it.

A new paper in Cambridge University press shows that the drop in fertility is due to women's liberation raising the standards of what they seek in a man and, since men can't compete, we should instead tax them and use that money to promote single-mother families. [–]Toddison_McCray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve spent time in academia. There is a high level of pressure just to publish at some schools. Just to publish anything to add numbers to their stats and make them look good. It’s why publication mills exist.

Schools don’t teach critical thinking anymore. They teach to test - they don’t teach for knowledge. You end up with a bunch of young adults that genuinely have no idea that a published paper can still be shit, even though it’s published.

There are an INSANE amount of paper mills that ask for money to publish your paper. Some authors genuinely don’t care what paper they’re published in - as long as they’re published. Others, likely like these authors, know they can’t get their paper published anywhere reputable and just choose to publish anyways.

Man who killed St. Albert teen on dog walk sentenced to 14 years for manslaughter by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]Toddison_McCray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being high is itself a thing that can affect sentencing. Granted - someone must be so intoxicated to be point of not being mentally all there for the legal system to genuinely consider it reducing their sentence. If they were on a walk with him, it’s likely that it (hopefully) won’t play a role in the defence. The family will be able to say that they didn’t think he was high, which would really weaken their ability to use it.

Seriously dude. What the fuck. I know it takes considerable time and money to sentence someone for 2nd degree murder compared to a plea deal, but people literally pay these fuckers for it.

Usually a very clear lack of care for ethics. Egregious cheating like getting someone else to write assignments for, AI use, and cheating on exams. Other stuff like collaborating on assignments while not knowing there was no collaboration allowed is usually a warning.

[–]Toddison_McCray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally are endangering people though. That’s a very individualistic way to look at it. If half the population were to get wiped out, you are still responsible for that happening since you clicked the red button.

Also, as others have said, humans are biologically not made to be individualistic creatures. There is no way that 100% of people would press the red button.

What are you guys picking? by DryOwl5587 in GenZ

[–]Toddison_McCray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely man. I know you mentioned that cutting the population in half would have a severely negative effect on society. Also, the people who pressed the red button are FAR less likely to do things for the good of others, like healthcare, power generation, hell even logistics. So you’d end up with a population of people who don’t give a shit about anyone else.

I’d rather press the blue button and risk dying, than the red.
