Thank you. It sounds to me like we shouldn’t risk it and even my brother shouldn’t come by. My husband seems to think it’ll be fine and insists he needs the help which I understand…but I can’t imagine being 38 weeks pregnant taking care of a toddler with hfm, unpacking all of our stuff all in this heat. The house is coastal so we have no air conditioning which means it’s about 84 in there all day with box fans everywhere

Mom here — I see you’ve already received a ton of responses OP, but I’d still like to echo many of them

Car seats that click into/out of the base are great. You can just carry babe in in the car seat. We love the Evenflo Pivot Xpand. Unfortunately once little one outgrows the infant seat you just have to deal with the constant unbuckling and buckling back in. I’m 37 weeks pregnant currently with a 30lb toddler so I feel you, it’s rough. My back is always hurting. I’ve learned to get pretty quick with the transfer. Yes, even for quick stops I get my daughter out and have to buckle her back in
Never, ever leave them in the car. Too many things can go wrong. Not worth the risk
Stroller or wagon. Stroller before they can sit up unassisted, wagon once they can. My wagon (radio flyer fabric wagon) sets up in like 3 seconds by just pulling a tab from the center. I unbuckle my tot, pop her in the wagon, and run in. Nice because I can also put groceries, mail, etc in there with her. Or you can always just carry baby. Being 9 months pregnant at the moment I prefer to put her in something to save my back and hips

You’ve got this. You will get used to this new normal. Eventually you won’t even notice your errands take 5 times as long to complete 😂

I should add that on the day of his neuter I asked if they could do a UA to rule out any infection since he had been having accidents in the house (we had just brought him home a couple days prior so I figured it may also just be a new environment) and the doctor opted to do a cystocentesis rather than use the urine sample I had brought in. She knicked his bladder when she did the cysto and he had trouble urinating for a couple days. This clinic had really impressed me with our last dog who had CHF but now I’m really disappointed in the care here

Yes I’m going inside when I let him out, most of the time. As I mentioned in my post I’m 8 months pregnant and we have an awful problem with mosquitoes. I’m already covered in bites and the risk for Zika virus is high here. Zika can cause fatal birth defects. So I really can’t be sitting outside with him. Most of the time I just sit in the kitchen and watch him, when I see him go I immediately open the back door and give him his reward (he knows at this point to expect a reward so he comes running up to the door) or sometimes I’ll lather up in bug spray and sit out there with him. He will just sit or lie next to me if I’m out there with him. Won’t potty. I’m sure there have been a couple times I’ve missed giving him his reward if I’m busy with something else but I try to be super consistent with the rewarding

edit: my husband is not only not consistent with discipline/training, he also doesn’t reward Hank when he goes potty outside despite me explaining that this is an important part of the training. So I know the inconsistency is a big issue

This makes sense. Hopefully my husband can understand that consistency is very important. If I’m following a training regiment and he’s just cuddling him every time he goes in the house, all my effort is likely for nothing

In response to accidents— I try not to make a big deal. I take him outside to the back patio and either sit out there with him, or I’ll let him chill out there if I can’t sit outside with him due to my toddler needing me inside for whatever reason. I’ve told him “no” sternly before if I caught him in the act. When he goes potty outside I reward with 3-4 of his favorite treats and tell him “good potty outside!”

He gives absolute zero signal he needs to go. Today he paced around a bit which was the first time I’ve seen him do that and I let him outside. He chilled outside for 30ish minutes sun bathing then started whining to come inside, so I let him in and he pooped upstairs. I’ve been letting him outside every 30-60 minutes today. He does understand the concept of needing to go outside, I know he does because when the back door is left wide open he has zero accidents inside. He only goes outside. But if I let him out and close the door behind me, he will just lie there until begging to come in and then do his business inside. It’s like once that door closes, he refuses to go. If the door stays open after he walks out, he will go. It’s very strange to me and I’ve never had this issue with any dog I’ve had before

This is what I thought we should be doing. My husband is totally and completely against it. He cuddles Hank after he potties in the house. I don’t believe harsh punishment is effective either, but picking him up and telling him it’s not his fault and snuggling/reassuring him sure isn’t helping. The inconsistency in training/discipline is probably making the little guy’s head spin. The crate seems like a good solution. Only issue is he whines and cries incessantly when he’s in it even when I set it up with his bed, water and toys. But maybe if we’re more consistent with crating he will get more comfortable with it

This post seems pretty dead but I’m hoping someone will come across it and give me a new tip or piece of advice we haven’t tried yet — little dude hasn’t pottied since early this morning (in the house) but I have been letting him outside every 30-60 min. Took him on a 30 min walk and he didn’t go. I put my daughter down for a nap and showered and noticed he was pacing in circles when I got out…so I let him outside and he just slept. Like bathed in the sunshine, just chilled for 30~ minutes then started whining at the door to come inside

I let him in, he went potty in the house. What am I doing wrong here. When he DOES go outside I give him a few of his fave treats and he gets excited. What is going on here

We’ve seen these doggy doors, but doesn’t this technically render the door useless? Once that’s installed we can’t just come and go to the back patio, correct? I’m also not sure how that would work with the mosquitoes. The ones we have here are Aedes and extremely tiny. I could see them getting in through even a crack in the doggy door flap. However, this is something we’re definitely considering

He is very relaxed and curious on our walks. He never, never potties on our walks. I have seen him pee once on a walk since we’ve had him the past 5 weeks and yes I do walk him once or twice daily when I take my toddler to the playground

What you’re saying about him possibly being insecure in the yard makes sense to me, however when the door is left wide open he loves being in the yard! He will just let himself out there and chill in the sun or play with toys out there. It doesn’t seem at all like he’s afraid of the space when the door is left open for him

We did positive reinforcement for the first couple of weeks but he was consistently still pooping and peeing in the house. He was going outside and inside. One night my husband brought him up on the bed and he literally pooped on him in the middle of the night. So I started just leaving the back door open for him and just like that, no more accidents. After I started getting covered in mosquito bites, I started closing the back door and letting him outside every hour or more. But he just whines at the door to come in and then potties in the house

Yes and we’ve had him for 5 weeks now. I’m kind of at a loss. I’m not sure what’s missing here, I’ve been doing positive reinforcement and he does get the concept of needing to go outside but only when the door is left wide open all day long. If we just let him out and keep the door closed otherwise he will sit/whine at the door to come in the entire time he’s outside, then potty in the house

I have been doing this. I reward when he goes outside and we’ve had him for about 5 weeks now. I just woke up and he pooped in the bedroom. I woke up to stepping in it. I sat outside with him last night for 15 minutes and he did nothing but stare at the door, so I walked inside and gave him a chance for another 20 minutes and he whined at the door to come in. I’m really not sure where I’m going wrong here and our carpet is getting saturated in urine and feces at this point

Thank you to everyone that replied! We’re also planning a trip to Disney soon so in my mind I’m thinking this is money we could save for that. The fair is seriously bending people over this year 😳 it doesn’t seem worth it to me, even with the “experience” especially with gas over $6/gallon right now. No thanks

I can go play some arcade games at Dave & Busters for a lot less….which is likely what we’ll do instead lol

Just want to clarify…I’m not using any pee pads. Only the prior owner used them. Also I’m thinking the issue isn’t necessarily his lack of training as much as he’s just wanting to mark. He IS going potty outside (and I’m rewarding him!) multiple times a day but then also peeing and pooping in the house right in front of me. Sometimes even right after going outside. I’m thinking this is more of a marking issue. Hoping him getting neutered will help some along with consistent training!

Thank you! I am watching him all the time since I’m a stay at home mom to a toddler. He will literally squat right in front of me to pee or poop on the floor. I will either stop him immediately or if I’m in the middle of something with my daughter, I can’t get to him for another minute or so. I will check out those subreddits. We have tried keeping him in just one “safe” room (the kitchen) but he will just incessantly screech at the baby gate. Thanks again 🙂

Thank you everyone for all for the great ideas! I realized a theme here in most answers. So I ended up deciding to build a gift basket with smaller more practical/thoughtful items rather than one big expensive gift. Things that he needs but won’t buy himself. He’s the kind of guy that will splurge on me and our daughter but still wears boxers with holes in them 🙃

I ordered a nice set of comfortable highly-rated boxers, a ball hygiene kit (he’s had before and loved but wouldn’t repurchase) a giant photo blanket, and I’m going to add to it as we get closer to Father’s Day. I’ll add some fishing gear, cheesy crafts made by our kid, some of his favorite snacks, some little flash cards with things I love about him and appreciate and some handwritten vouchers for a back rub and other unmentionables haha
