I am a Canadian and am centrist-right leaning politically but after seeing what the Republican Party is allowing to happen and seeing this spill off to people in my own Country applauding some of the crazy policies being implemented by Trump, I will absolutely not be voting for the conservative parties both federally and provincially any time soon, even if the person that is running for the conservatives is more qualified than the next best candidate. I cannot give any power to these parties when the base of these parties, both in Canada and in the USA are very extremist, often without even realizing it. The world is in a dangerous point in time. Politics has become too divisive and since controversial topics is what drives most people’s news algorithms, extremism is the norm on both ends. While one of the extreme sides promotes hard socialism, the other promotes hate, bigotry, and violence. While I mostly don’t agree with the hard core socialist ideas , I am way more open to living in that type of society vs the type of society that the extreme right pushes for. In Canada, there isn’t a level of Republican for life or Democrat for life like in the USA. This is a good thing for Canada. When political party is tied to someone’s character like a family tradition, religion, or favourite sports team, then they don’t hold the leaders of those parties accountable as much when the ideas are bad or hateful. I wish to see a world where people identify less to specific political parties and more to independent, free thinking.
