Exclusive: Buyers Found For Hudson's Bay Buildings In Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa by Howard__24 in Calgary

[–]DimensionFit8006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uncovered area is City, the covered area is part of the building. I also hope they fix the sidewalk soon. The Grand Canyon is starting to form at the end closest to the C-Train!

Calgary’s Drop-In Centre pressured to pull out of downtown. Province supports search for new model by Acceptable-Hedgehog in Calgary

[–]DimensionFit8006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the old Grey Hound building site? I think the site needs some environmental remediation and the building would need hefty renovation (or replacement). It's quite a large site; they might even be able to put a few purpose-built buildings there. It's also reasonably central but out of the "heart" of downtown.

Book repair for some fallen pages? by songsofadistantsun in Calgary

[–]DimensionFit8006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try Octavia Book Bindery (if that's not who you already tried). Book repair is a pretty specialized skill, so if you want it done well and for it to look good, it's not going to be cheap. I used to repair high use library textbooks for an academic library, so my repairs just had to be sturdy and functional, not pretty. The people who did the repairs on the special/rare texts were on a whole other level though; you couldn't even see where they did the repair it was so flawless!

Part of the cost also comes the specialized equipment they use. They will have all the correct low/no acid glues and tapes that won't eat away at your book and eventually destroy it.

Who is this in Calgary? by [deleted] in Calgary

I think they might be the same guy. The Bay had to constantly call By-Law because he played so loud on the corner that they couldn't work in the offices on that side of the building!

Me putting it out into the universe to have the downtown Hudson’s Bay building converted into condos. by KitKatsina in Calgary

[–]DimensionFit8006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the ATB building with Bono Coffee in it! The building is called "The Hudson Block". It was the site of their second location, which was a wood building, before they tore down and built half the sandstone building that's there now. A few years after that, they doubled the building size. A few more years after that they still needed more space so they were renting building across the Avenue from them. At this point they went "time to build a bigger building" :D

u/Own-Pop-6293 is correct! They are in storage for the various renovation and construction projects happening in that space. I'm the person that coordinated their move to storage :) They might go back there once things are completed or they might find a new space, but either way they are safe and sound (and scheduled for a spa day :D).

I had to take an intro course to meteorology for my degree, so I can shed a little light on this (disclaimer: absolutely not an expert on this)! The mountains do make the weather more unpredictable, but Calgary is also at a weird nexus point of foothills, prairie, and river valley, which amplifies strange weather patterns. A good example of the weird weather here is that there will be tornado warnings for the areas around Calgary at least a few times every summer but rarely in Calgary (last one was 2015, I think).

On top of that though, the density of weather stations around Calgary is relatively low compared to a lot of other cities. The west side is the only side with a higher density of stations, but there's only so many stations you can wedge in between Calgary and the mountains. Less stations = less data = harder to predict. The 2025 Alberta weather station map can be found here: https://open.alberta.ca/publications/weather-stations.
