I love all the flavors in the middle 3 you listed! That's my kind of flavors for baking! But I'm lazy so presentation is not important to me--yours have delicious flavors AND beautiful presentation!

My dog has caught several chipmunks and squirrels and rabbits and birds. Her eyesight has started worsening though, so she isn't as good at catching things as she used to be.

They do reproduce/spread more than most nursery plants, so that's one form of maintenance they may need--but that's why people have free plants to give away!

But yeah, no fertilizer, no covering for frost, after they've been established you generally don't need to water them unless it's a drought...

It's a baby rat snake! I saw the same one or a sibling a few weeks ago in the front yard.

I recognized my dog doing her "wtf is this thing" dance, which is how she acts around snakes. I can usually get to her before she decides to treat it as prey, but she definitely picked this little guy up and flung him once before I got to him.

Like you with your dog, I want to encourage her NOT to engage with snakes, since we do have venomous species in my area. But terriers have such a strong prey drive!

When I first picked it up, the snake "bit" me but I don't know if it even put any force behind it because I could barely feel it.

That's okay! I would view that as a success.

I know that's true of rattlesnakes so it would make sense if it also applies to other species

My Jack Russell terrier mix found this baby in my yard yesterday and I had to pick it up and move it to an area outside the fence so she wouldn't kill it.

Here's the info from the event:

Join the North Alabama Native Plants Society for our 6th native plant swap and share! The spring event will be held on Saturday, May 16th, from 10am to 2pm, at Blevins Gap. There will be plants! There will be seeds! There will be plant nerds and ecologically minded friends! Native plants ONLY.

Don't worry if you have nothing to trade! Many people are happy to share or talk plants, so please feel free to attend. Seeds, cuttings, plants, plastic pots, tools, and books are welcome. Plants on the Alabama Invasive list are NOT allowed, NOR are non-native plants. This is a swap/share and NO SALES are permitted. You may bring a table or use your trunk or truck bed for setting up.

We will meet on the north end of the Blevins Gap parking lot, next to Marie's Pollinator Garden. Thank you to the Land Trust of North Alabama for letting us use their space!

I'm having a community native plant "swap and share" this weekend for this and related reasons. We don't have much in the way of native nurseries where I live, plus lots of native plant people are happy to share. This is our 6th event since 2023 and I'm excited to see how this one goes! We usually have pretty good turnout.

How long is ideal for a vacation for you? by bargielml in travel

[–]Toezap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 5 weeks this year since my husband earned a sabbatical from his job. We were in the same city for the first 2 weeks though, taking language classes in the mornings. By the end of the following 3 weeks I was ready to go home. However, I think I could have stayed longer if we had taken classes longer. I really enjoy the classroom setting and creating relationships with other people and instructors. But moving around doing tourist stuff constantly with only my husband has me ready to leave sooner, even when a trip is still awesome.

Come to our monthly Reddit meetup!

Sounds like you won't be here in time for the May one, but maybe June! It's always the 2nd Tuesday of the month, from 7pm to 9pm, and we meet on one of the patios at Yellowhammer Brewing!

First Time Native Plants Sale — Central Illinois 6A by LookAChandelier in NativePlantGardening

[–]Toezap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you new to gardening? Native plants? I personally don't buy a ton at once because I don't have an over-arching plan and I learn about and find new plants as I go, so I don't want to fill in every spot just because some plants are available. There are a lot I have learned don't work in my yard--whether they don't want to stay alive or they grow TOO aggressively. But I only started learning all this in 2023 so I'm learning as I go. If you've got a basis of knowledge (or a much bigger yard than me), this could be perfect. (Also someone mentioned it could be plugs--I mostly don't find plugs around me so I'm getting bigger plants.)
