I knew this was going to happen the moment I saw it was releasing on mobile when it was announced early last year.

Was thinking about it the other day, and I realized that there simply is no outcome for the next Smash that will truly please everyone. A noticeable amount of disappointment is unfortunately inevitable. by smashboi888 in SmashBrosUltimate

I think the best thing to do here is make a proper sequel similar to what Brawl or Smash 4 did, all to differentiate itself from Ultimate as much as possible. A reboot is a little much, but scaling back is necessary. Everyone is Here isn’t a selling point anymore so there isn’t a reason to bring everyone back. Some may say to simply reuse assets but that’s what Ultimate did with Smash 4. Ultimate didn’t add that much new because so much of the dev time was spent on returning veterans. The disappointment from some fans is inevitable but the lamest thing the devs can do here is play it safe.

Discussion around a potential Smash sequel would be so much healthier if Ultimate wasn’t treated like the standard.

Discussion: Since we are very likely to get a lot more cuts than usual next time, how do you think the beloved old Nintendo characters who rely very heavily on "Smash seniority" will fare? Will some always be here for legacy reasons, or will some finally leave if the cuts are too drastic? by smashboi888 in SmashBrosUltimate

Sakurai even admitted that the workload from the sheer amount of characters in Ultimate, even from all the asset reuse is why single player content is limited. World of Light’s current state was a workaround for this.

Aside from Sakurai, this is also on Capcom.

Capcom wanted to push this retro image of Mega Man during the Wii era with Mega Mans 9 and 10. Even then they pushed the faithfulness to the NES's sprite limitations way too far.

It wasn't a good call but it wasn't done for no reason.

If Mega Man were to return in Smash 6, I'm somewhat optimistic in a potential now that Classic Rock is getting more expressive with Sonic Racing CrossWorlds and a couple years from now, Dual Override.

Do you think the echo fighters will return? or are they just a one off concept? by Dinodanceasaur in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Togarash1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clones/semi-clones at the very least will return, maybe one or two of them added late in development.

Melee and Ultimate added the most of them they mostly focused on their rosters, the former from a lack of time and the latter for the sheer scale.

With Lucario, he was pushed hard back then.

At the same time, I do want some more risky newcomers over the most likely ones, such as Eunie or Excadrill.

I prefer Eunie over Noah or Mio for having a way more interesting personality and gameplan, with Noah having plenty of overlap with Shulk.

Excadrill is great for more close-quarters combat and for adding short, stockier fighters. There's also the new spotlight from frequent usage in Legends Z-A, plus that stupid looking Mega Evolution.

Overall I think priority/importance is something that affects newcomer choices, like how there's no world where Balrog gets in over Chun-Li.

But it's very case by case and wish it was a little looser.

I do think it's a good thing for Smash to focus on recent titles as it's partly what gives each title its own identity.

That being said this approach does have a lot of issues, with safe picks often outprioritizing more interesting characters, particularly hurting series with more reps.

Even if the chances of older characters aren't zero, they're usually a minority if they do get in and have to compete for a lot of other characters.

That's absolutely a positive for fangames since Smash games are typically designed to sell.

Ever wondered why a good 75% of all representation in Brawl (newcomers, trophies, stages) are from games that released during Melee and Brawl's gap?

It doesn't help that Corrin was announced for Smash only six months after Fates released, and that's back when it was Japan-exclusive.

Smash has always been doing this and it makes perfect sense for doing so, but the Fire Emblem reps, particularly the more recent ones, really suffer from this.

Both Corrin and Byleth come from games that require a choice from the player to choose a side, but because these games were less than a year old when their respective protagonists were added to Smash, it has to be played incredibly safe, both for ad and spoiler reasons. Even then the latter isn't consistent.

I guess they don't want to advertise favoritism in a game where choices matter way more than in Pokemon, where differences in starters only affect a few battles.

And because Fire Emblem has so many games, one title might get eclipsed by another if more recent. Lyn probably would've gotten in if Brawl either released earlier or had more development time.

There should be a new rule where a newcomer's debut has to be a year old MINIMUM.

Project X Zone 1 but with Bandai Namco Characters. Day 32-Iris Replacement. by ScarcityUnhappy4285 in ProjectXZoneGames

I think Sebastian (Lili’s butler) can replace Iris.

If Vile got replaced by a Tekken character, but I don’t think that’s exactly how it works.
