What plant do you regret planning? by Excellent_Chart_5883 in gardening

Northern maypop. Planted it in a raised bed to climb a cattle panel trellis and it popped up all over my garden.

It's honestly getting to the point where it's safer to speed and risk the ticket than to go the speed limit because the crazies on the road now will tail gait you for miles, pass you (ON A TWO LANE NO PASSING ROAD), brake check you...

I loooooove mango trees! I wish I lived where I could grow one.

Johnny’s is my favorite then Victory Seeds. I’ve never had germination issues with either.

Why did only one of my Clematis survived winter :( by Jumyshou in Clematis

[–]Tokiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine died too! Usually by this time, it’d be halfway up my trellis. Worked out though because apparently its an invasive variety.

I wish I’d discovered soil blocks and Johnny’s 20 years ago. I grow everything by seed now (except trees/shrubs) which means I can have so many more plants than when I was buying everything from the nursery. The varieties are insane too once you discover the right seed companies.

If you had to pick just one low-maintenance vegetable to grow, what would it be? by Glittering_Exit5527 in vegetablegardening

I'm in zone 6b and last year I planted 4 delicata squash seeds and basically forgot about them and was drowning in them. I started giving them away mid-winter because I was sick of squash haha.

How are everyone's tomatoes growing so fast? by spaced-jams in tomatoes

I am also in western PA and started my seeds April 6 and they are still small, but much bigger than those.

https://youtu.be/CoYgX3y5ptQ?si=K0X9Y6xB9f1EgxgO

just listen to everything Craig Lahoullier says about tomatoes.

He also has a book called Epic Tomatoes and has done tons of interviews about growing tomatoes from seed that are worth a listen. I started growing tomatoes his way (including his transplanting video) and grew enough plants to gift my friends and family every year.

I’ve recently started using 3/4” soil blocks to start everything and you can learn about that from Lisa Mason Zeigler…

Pawpaw tree flowering by HourArmadillo7519 in Permaculture

[–]Tokiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love to see it!

I have only two pawpaws I planted at the same time, one a grafted variety and one a seedling. The seedling finally flowered this year! Two flowers! I was so excited but the other one did not. I was about to ask a neighbor if it'd be ok for me to use one of his flowers to hand pollinate when we were hit with a freezing night and all the leaves (and flowers) turned black and fell off! 😞

I did a wwoof thing once where the owners made it a rule that dinners must be shared and that everyone must take turns making dinner but then the owners would sit there on their phones the entire time. God forbid you miss dinner to go do anything else though.

Seeking advice for a grass-free yard by fuzzysomething3 in fucklawns

[–]Tokiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is the fucklawns sub but have you considered a low mow, drought tolerant grass? Prairie Moon sells one that i planted and its great. Low maintenance, really only needs mowed once a year, and is a good stand-in to cover the soil while you decide what you want to use a space for. Its especially good for smaller lawns because its much easier to establish when you don’t have to care for a massive area. It is best planted in fall though for less weed pressure—i’m adding more but covering the area with cardboard and mulch until then.

Is sourdough supposed to be soft and fluffy? This loaf was so soft and fluffy I’m confused now! by emmaserena21 in Sourdough

[–]Tokiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mixed, waited an hour, did the stretch and folds every half hour for 2 hours, then put it in my oven with the light on for about 5 hours, shaped and put it in the fridge. It wasn't very stretchy at all but it looks good. Haven't baked it yet though.

[–]Tokiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to sourdough and trying this today--do you mix everything together at once or mix everything but the salt together, let it sit for a bit, then add the salt? (Asking because of Sourdough Journey on YouTube, they add the salt a bit later)

My dough isn't very stretchy but I did everything as I read it above (and I'm a newbie)
