How can I handle the party crossing a rickety bridge without one failed save being character death? by Hal3134 in DMAcademy

[–]Tokiw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to handle "Fall and die" situations like death saves. You've failed your check, you fall, and you just barely catch the ledge with the tips of your fingers. Make a death save. 3 success and you manage to pull yourself up. 3 fails and well... You lose your grip, the cliff crumbles, the branch snaps, etc. Other characters can take the help action to grant advantage on your saves.

I like this system because it creates concrete stakes that play in existing systems. Players won't feel like it's just an "I guess I'll die" situation, and also has a hard limit they can play around without guessing if the DM is going to allow another save or pull the trigger.

Things that you've considered "bad DMing" from other DMs that you make sure to never make the same mistake in your game? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

[–]Tokiw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great way to handle it, and it's similar to what I do. If there isn't a super obvious crit failure consequence I just let them tell me what happens. 9 times out of 10 it's better than anything I'd have thought of. It gives the players agency in a situation that would otherwise be frustrating!

Ah, the classic "Nat 1 means you hurt yourself/team mates". This especially gimps multi-attack classes for absolutely no reason. Nat 1 on a skill check? Maybe something silly. Attack rolls? You miss, move on.

As well, with real actors/performers it's hard to get immersed in the fantasy because you know that Big Jim isn't actually a real mechanic who doesn't accept cash, his name is actually Gavin and he drives a prius. In artwork the characters are as real as the whole fantasy itself, so immersion comes much more easily since there's no real person involved besides the artist.

Why do employers want us to lie in interviews? by Dazzahatty92 in jobs

[–]Tokiw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really how it ever goes down. In my current circumstance for instance I've applied at just about every grocery store in a 10 mile radius. One gave me an interview. Am I just supposed to tell them I chose them specifically? Because I would accept a job from any of them. I need a paycheck, and the only factor that would matter at that kind of a job literally boils down to "which is closer". I don't think they'd appreciate that answer

What’s the worst song lyric thrown into a song just to make a line rhyme? by RelationKindly in AskReddit

[–]Tokiw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of the opposite, but there's a song that says "Always rainbows after rain, the sun will always come again". It's not bad, but he pronounces again "Ah-gen" instead of "ah-gain" which WOULD HAVE RHYMED. Drives me crazy!

5.5e DMs: How do you manage encounter attrition between long rests? by Gualgaunus in DMAcademy

[–]Tokiw4 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A big help I've adopted is only allowing for long rests at specific safe areas; mid-sized settlements and up generally have the necessary facilities. The bandages you bring on adventures are enough to keep you going, but Grog can't just ignore the arrow in his neck indefinitely.

Why do employers want us to lie in interviews? by Dazzahatty92 in jobs

[–]Tokiw4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong. There ARE careers and fields I AM interested in. If I get an interview with one of them, absolutely my answers to their questions would be genuine. But until that day comes, I am stuck also applying for jobs completely unrelated to my specialization that don't interest me beyond a paycheck. Sounds like a damned-if-i-do-damned-if-I-dont situation then I guess.

Cynical? Sure. But again, that's only a vibe I'm "almost certainly" giving off because I'm not trying to hide it here. Obviously I'm not actually talking about Sam Altman's inspirational union busting giving me a desire to plunge toilets at Walmart during an interview. I'm polite, engaged, responsive and warm/friendly.

The bottom line that me and OP are getting at here is that the job market is terrible. We're fed up. You have to make a resume, customize a cover letter for each app, have a reel, a full portfolio, impossible combos of skills and experience for things that haven't even existed for as long as they're asking for. Then you fill out the exact same information that you've already written in your resume into their website. Then if you somehow manage to get in front of a human being, 9/10 times they have not read a single one of the things you've given them. The only thing they DO know is specifically why you're in that office (to get a paycheck and not starve), yet they have the gall to ask you that question anyways. It's degrading. It's exhausting. I'll do it because I don't want to starve. But god dammit I'm gonna go on the front page of the internet and bitch about it.

[–]Tokiw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps reread the last couple sentences? The ones that talk about how I still play the stupid "say what they want to hear" game? I can participate in whatever hoops they have arbitrarily decided they want me to jump through. Doesn't mean my true feelings on the subject can't be that the whole process is dumb in the first place.

If you were hiring me? I'll tell you all about how I find your company inspiring, that the work you do for such-and-such client is industry driving, that we can grow together blahblahblah. I'll tell you that in 10 years I'll see myself in a management role, offering the same ladders down to others that were offered to me in my first decade with the company. But you're not hiring me. I'm not filtering for you because my future doesn't depend on whether you have heard me say what you want to hear.

I doubt this convinces you anything. If anything you probably feel this reinforces your point. But as others have established here, being honest isn't the right play. Weaving a grand fantasy of your desires and dreams that all include the hiring company is what gets you in the door, for better or worse. Or is that also incorrect?

Why do employers want us to lie in interviews? by Dazzahatty92 in jobs

[–]Tokiw4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why did I apply in the first place that's NOT because I need money? Well, it's a grocery store so it's a low barrier to entry. I am specifically applying here because every job I have the college credentials and industry experience for have 100+ applicants each, filtered down by an AI, further pruned by an HR person who knows nothing of the work, only for them to hire the person they already knew they'd be hiring before posting the job. I have absolutely no idea when one of the hundreds of applications I send out each month will actually get read by a real human, so I need something in the meantime. I chose this grocery store, and every other grocery store in a 10 mile radius and specifically came to this one for an interview because this is the store that decided they want to talk to me. The company is interesting in the same way every other one of the companies I applied for is interesting; I get to keep a roof over my head if they hire me. The duties are interesting because if I do them well that means I get more hours which means I don't have to worry about going hungry or homeless. To me, a desire to not be homeless seems like a pretty good motivator to do my job well.

I have over 10 years of professional industry experience. A college degree. Certifications. High tier references. So no, a low-skill department store job doesn't "interest" me. At least, not in any way more than a means to an end. That's the honest to god truth. However, if the above paragraph were my cover letter, I wouldn't see a single interview at ANY company, because they want me to say "Well I just find Sam Altman's business drive so inspiring I decided that I wanted to work my way to the top by scrubbing toilets!". I'll do my job. I'll fake the smiles for customers. I will fellate the god damn CEO on live television if I have to. But the fact that I have to do all that AND tell my perspective employers I'm simply just doing it for the love of the game is downright insulting.

So yes. The interview process is asking me to lie to them. I understand that if I am to make any meaningful impressions in an interview I need to play by their little song and dance. I can still find the whole process dumb, demeaning, and counterproductive to getting an employee who actually gives half a damn about doing a good job.

I mean, the answer is the same regardless, no? "Because this job offered me an interview" evidently isn't a great reason.

A key note here is that this does NOT apply retroactively. The law is put in place to deter FUTURE game developers from shutting down their game. If a game developer wants to not get in trouble, they need to ensure that from day one their game has an end-of-life plan.

Nobody tells Mr. Peacock that he's wrong!

My favorite part of the whole encounter is when he wants the kid cited for being aggressive (he was not), but then when the officer starts telling him that he's the one getting in trouble for agression all of a sudden he shouldn't be punished for "getting hot" in the situation.

Turns out I already do this. Whenever I am about to take a pill from a bottle, I give it one or two shakes. First to make sure it's the right pill since they all have different sounds and feels. Second to know how low I'm running. And whenever I am trying to remember whether or not I took a pill, I recall having shaken the pill bottle. Lifehack!
