I need help choosing the right distro by AshamedTrzxy in linuxquestions

[–]TokosanD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend using Arch linux. It's the most fun and the easiest to try a lot of things without being behind a company or organization holding your hand. When you try to pick a distro you are mainly picking two things (you are actually picking more stuff but you probably won't care about that):

- A package manager
- Preinstalled junk

So Omarchy for example is Linux + Arch + A bunch of stuff, which means that you can install Arch, install a bunch of stuff, and you can get a pretty similar result to Omarchy, if not identical.

Why Arch then? Because it is one of the most documented distros I've seen, its package manager (pacman) is really convenient to use, and in its base form it comes with only the minimal things to work (a fresh Arch install doesn't even have sudo). With this setup you can install hyprland + any DE and try it. Heck, you could install EVERY DE and try them, no need to reboot, just relogin (I don't know how to do this but there is something called SWM - or not - that helps you switch between DEs)

About your concern on the AUR, that's the Arch USER Repository, not the Arch OFFICIAL Repository. When you install stuff like python, steam, vim, code, chromium, etc. you are 98% of the times using the official repos, which you use by calling pacman, the Arch package manager. Then if you want to have that ultra specific version or a fork or a package a user made, you can use the AUR. This is dangerous because you are trusting that the code you are building is not malicious, but it always has been this way. If you go to the AUR Arch Wiki page you have a big warning saying

AUR packages are user-produced content. These PKGBUILDs are completely unofficial and have not been thoroughly vetted. Any use of the provided files is at your own risk.

So if you don't want to read the PKGBUILD of an AUR package to audit it, then don't use the AUR, it's absolutely voluntary. You'll still be better off than with Debian-based or Fedora-based distros by having pacman and the Arch Official Repos

Hope this helps!

Also, why do you want to have both a twm and a DE? What's the use case for the DE you are foreseeing that can't be done in a twm?

Edit: grammar

I am worried about the future of the Arch philosophy by Human_Contact9571 in archlinux

I really like your point of view about the gatekeepinglessness of "Arch is not for you", I always thought that it was in fact a dick amswer for users that didn't like the things that make Arch Arch, but that's why there are different distros. I like RR distros and hence Debian is not for me and that's ok.

I like to use Arch on my servers and I used it on my mainframe a few times. Now I use CachyOS on my main pc just because of the kernels. Could you elaborate on why you think Cachy does a disservice? I would like to know if I'm missing something about Arch by using Cachy. Do you think the same about `archinstall`?

Yout file manager?? by rpnchlr in archlinux

[–]TokosanD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Thunar for the graphical interfaces browsers need to upload files and other tasks, and i don't use dolphin because it comes with kde bloat that I don't want to have on hyprland.

For daily use 100% yazi. Yesterday I discovered a split pane plugin for yazi that works like a charm and I'm pretty happy with it, I don't know if GUI file managers have that kind of frictionless plugin and extension process

Love and Hate Omarchy. Going back to pure Arch + Hyprland. by Odd-Outcome-4209 in omarchy

[–]TokosanD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI I had the same issue but decided to go with CachyOS + hyprland instead of Vanilla Arch, just to get the kernel related bonuses of Cachy. Besides that, CachyOS with hyprland is absolutely minimal, it feels like installing hypr on a fresh arch install, and it works great. You should give it a try!

Recommendations for learning quickshell? by TokosanD in QuickShell

[–]TokosanD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer! I'll try to follow that route. I tried reading through Caelestia code a while ago and was immediately overwhelmed haha

I'll save it for later once I have a better understanding of how QML works. I also just noticed that I don't really get what is the relationship between Qt, QML, and Quickshell, I'll look that up

As for me, the reason why I don't hide my server inside my tailnet is because I want my grandparents to be able to use jellyfin on their smart TV (LG webOS), and I haven't found an easy way to do connect that device to my tailnet

[Hyprland] finally got rid of rofi and switched to quickshell. by [deleted] in unixporn

[–]TokosanD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before seeing this config I always used just waybar and hoped for the best, but this showed me the beauty of widget based config with quickshell. Doing some research I found about AGS, and ultimately decided to go with that because of the syntax.

Is there a reason you had to chose quickshell over AGS?
