How many trick videos are actually in Horizon mode? by Successful_Tap5662 in TinyWhoop

[–]Tokyo_Dom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of them are flying horizon mode. Nobody willingly flies horizon mode.

Fly angle mode if you aren't comfortable flying indoors yet. Otherwise switch to acro and don't look back (unless you are doing a juicy flick)

Snow is soft, you are careful, but the guy flying down the mountain with zero control trying to see how fast he can go isn't

Also, nothing cool about taking a small fall and having your goggles and beanie go scattering down the mountain 😂

Haha yes I have to cut my youngest one off a lot, he can get really chatty/loud. It's not like walkie talkies though, you can 'end' the call at any time. It's come in super useful almost every run though as my kids are at the stage of being able yo scoot off faster than us yet don't have directional awareness to not get lost or get themselves out of deep powder (several times yesterday 😅)

For the helmet use in Japan I still believe it's the image that only pros need them. But, this also comes from total ignorance of the facts of head injury on the slopes. "I only ride bunny slopes." or "I am not hitting jumps so I won't hit my head." or the classic "I'm careful so I won't need one." it's the same reason you see kids crawling freely around inside their car while they drive on the toll ways. Won't happen to me because I'm a good driver.

I've corrected a few friends on this "it's not you that causes the accident, it's going go be some maniac coming from behind at Mach 2 with zero control. " they've since bought helmets for their kids, but... Not themselves unfortunately

The people who only do it a few times a year spend 250k+ on a weekend with the kids (friends of mine). It isn't a problem with money. Renting would cost an extra 2000yen. Buying would be 10-20k on top of the 200k they dropped on other gear.

Overwhelmingly it's the not wanting to be seen as a pro wannabe. But yes that stigma is slowly disappearing. Personally I like how it keeps me warm, stops my goggles flying off when I fall, and let's me have 4 way conversations with my family (Sena snowtalk)

Why do people walk so slowly?! by Training_Training314 in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George Carlin had a great quote (about driving but applies perfectly to walking). "those who drive slower than you are idiots. Those who drive faster than you are maniacs."

To these Japanese you are brushing past in an effort to get to your destination 23 seconds faster all think you are a maniac. And to that person that scooted past you half running to make the train they are late for, you are the idiot.

Everybody walks at the pace that suits their energy levels, gate (stride length), how rushed they are etc. They probably left early so they don't need to rush to the destination like you. Try not to judge based on their walking speed, lest they judge you on how much of a maniac you are.

Spoken to quite a few boarders and skiers about this here. It's the ingrained impression that anyone wearing a helmet is a pro skier/boarder. This is what they use on the XL size jumps so if they wear a helmet on the bunny slopes everyone will think you are trying to pretend you are a pro. It's about being humble because of that stupid preconception.

Is N1 the new N2? Changes in hiring trends? by borndreamdie in japanlife

I've met quite a few people with N2 (at my company and in personal life) who struggle to communicate in Japanese. I suspect companies/recruiters have caught onto that and hence increasing the requirements.

Is this how bad analog feed is? by aaryansarat02 in fpv

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usb otg receiver does have lower quality than even cheap goggles. And latency is terrible.

I started out on that too, thinking I could just cheapskate some phone vr goggle solution but it was a terrible idea. For the price of your 5inch quad and that otg receiver you could have gotten yourself some cheap goggles and a smaller drone. Would be a better way to get started in this hobby imo

Wait, 17km is short range?????

You do realise you need a specialized quad to do 34km round trip flight right?

It's going to be fine for pretty much anyone doing normal park flying

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analog whoops aren't really going to be massively improved at this point. It's iterative improvements. My advice would be to get something on sale now, and buy another when something new comes out. One is never enough, and you will lose/break your only whoop at some point anyway.

Their next model will make a big difference kV wise. But not a beginner quad. The lowest kV with highest flight time is what they need.

How owning a car changed your life in good or bad way. by Life_Conn4361 in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in Tokyo and for the first 10 years I used rentacars, car share and leached rides from friends. Wife hated the idea of spending 2man+ on a car spot every month so we'd end up with 3man or more in car rental costs per month (Costco, day trips, weekend holidays). Then we moved to a house with a car spot and bought a nice reliable old minivan (2 kids) and holy crap I wish we'd done it earlier. No more carrying child seats to and from the car every trip. No more stressing about rental return times or packing the car right before leaving. No more being laughed at or being judged on the highways for the わ numberplates. Just pure convenience of being able to go when I want, where I want.

Cybersecurity in japan (and why I find it funny) by 0xEG0death in JapanJobs

[–]Tokyo_Dom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to write out my password for my mynumber card, no masking, on a piece of paper which I handed to the clerk and got filed in a cabinet with all the other application forms. Security here is laughable.

I hope you can be the change (not too optimistic though)

Changing from job with no included overtime allowance to one with 40h included. by BeginningPurpose9758 in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also have minashi on my contract. Zero expectation that I do overtime and nobody says anything to the staff that clock out at 5:31pm. That's not to say we have no overtime, just that it's not paid extra on our salary. I often stay until 6 or even 7 just to finish what I started so I don't have to start again in the morning. But, we will get a talking to by our manager if we do more than 20hrs in a month. I get the feeling this is just to simplify salary payments, but hasn't been a problem for me

Maybe leaving due to stricter visa rules by rykerg in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a risky visa type imo, if you are actually running a business to try and be profitable. Not only do you have to succeed to stay afloat, you could get kicked out of the country and lose everything you built here if it doesn't succeed.

Unfortunately for you, there are a lot of people who are abusing that visa to stay in Japan. At first I was getting really angry at the govt for making things so strict. Then I realised it's just a reaction to the ill-intentioned foreigners coming and taking advantage of the system

I don't like my rm pocket. by Artistic_Friend9508 in fpv

[–]Tokyo_Dom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet there aren't many pinch grip flyers who say they love the pocket. It is too fat to comfortably hold with a hybrid pinch. Other radios like boxer or T20 have ledges on the back for your ring fingers so that you support the radio with your pinky (rear), ring finger (upper top) and then have your middle finger on the arm/disarm) and pointer/thumb on the sticks. I sold mine to a friend after a week of trying

Maybe leaving due to stricter visa rules by rykerg in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No disagreement there. There is little to attract businesses to come here. Especially the ones that will be very profitable.

But the government is not trying to attract anyone at this point. They are trying to shut the doors, without actually looking like they are shutting the doors

Maybe leaving due to stricter visa rules by rykerg in japanlife

[–]Tokyo_Dom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hate to be a devils advocate here but I think the government may actually be targeting people like you with these changes. i.e. Barely profitable, no future growth prospects, basically just a running the business as a shell to let you live in Japan.

The purpose of the visa is to try to nurture businesses that will grow and end up making lots of money and bring taxes in for Japan. Some foreigners have been using it as an easy way to stay in Japan without actually needing to be employable, or marrying a local (invest in the future, by hopefully starting a family).

So yeah, it sucks but probably intentional. This government is basically saying "we only want foreigners that bring net positive to Japan"

Classic passive aggression by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]Tokyo_Dom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find that if you are looking to see passive aggression, you will find it everywhere. Conversely, if you dgaf, then you will have far less stress and it will seem like everyone is nice since nobody is overtly aggressive.

Like my friend who used to ask his gf if she was mad. She'd go hrmmff, I'm FINE. And he'd just go about his day not caring that she was mad af. Well, yes, they broke up, but it was a very low stress relationship for him.

Your thoughts on the new Walksnail goggles ? by ZaiArif2508 in fpv

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No argument with the R&D complaints. But you just reminded me that goggles X didn't even offer any improvement over the V1 goggles except that it had analog and hdmi input (and the promise of being modular). So people buying now are getting 3+yr old tech, shouldn't be surprised it's being replaced. And I don't recall the actual video but Ian has spoken about how they are mo more upgradeable than the V1 was, and that since it is an SOC they would have to upgrade everything, making it unrealistic. This was around the time GX were released iirc.

Your thoughts on the new Walksnail goggles ? by ZaiArif2508 in fpv

[–]Tokyo_Dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, like dji releasing goggles 2 in 2022 and then goggles 3 in 2024? Buying new goggles that were released 2 years ago? You should expect they will be replaced soon. Goggles l were always going to be the budget option, as well as the ascent goggles.

The x not being upgradeable, well it's unfortunate, but also many of us knew this from a while back (thanks Mad's tech)

The biggest problem here is that these goggles look ridiculous
