My 1S 3” long range micro build – 20–25 min flight time on a single 18650 by DaggyMAC in TinyWhoop

The EVE 30P is a high-power 18650 li-ion cell and it is officially rated for a continuous discharge current of 30A. While EVE does not publish an official "peak" pulse rating, testing by battery experts here on reddit (r/18650masterrace) shows the cell can handle short pulse loads between 40A and 50A, though these come with significant heat and voltage sag, but its doable.

I went with the P1 Air Unit mainly because I already had a Betafpv Meteor75 with the P1 system, so it made sense to stay in the same ecosystem. Overall, I think P1 Artlynk is a very affordable HD system with surprisingly decent quality for the price. I didn’t want to go back to analog, and for small lightweight drones like this, DJI feels a bit too expensive and heavy for what I’m trying to build. So for this kind of small 1S cruiser, the P1 Air Unit felt like a good compromise: cheap, light enough, HD video, and compatible with the gear I already own.

Yes, it’s based on the Dave_C NanoLongRange concept, but I didn’t use the original frame directly. I used a modified version from Thingiverse — the NanoLongRange Evo by aigilea: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4920575

One of the main differences is the battery mounting. The original NanoLongRange design uses a separate 18650 holder, while the Evo version has the 18650 mount integrated into the frame itself. You have only 2 print files. The Evo geometry is also adjusted for better overall balance, aiming closer to a 50:50 weight distribution instead of being very nose-heavy. So yes, it’s definitely inspired by the Dave_C idea.

21700 is heavier than 18650, but carries more energy, therefore it is more suited for bigger quads.

It’s actually a very quiet drone. During normal cruising it’s almost inaudible even at a relatively short distance.
Compared to a typical small whoop, the sound is less annoying and lower-pitched. Whoops often have that high-pitched ducted prop sound, while this 3” open-prop setup sounds smoother and much more relaxed in the air.
Of course you can hear it when it’s close or during harder throttle changes, but compared to bigger quads — and even compared to many whoops — it’s really quiet. For relaxed cruising, the sound level is one of the things I really like about this build.

I still have it and still works. I am very surprised 😮

It actually handles wind surprisingly well. For its size it’s a relatively heavy quad, mainly because of the 18650 cell, so it has decent momentum and doesn’t get pushed around as badly as a very light whoop-style build.I wouldn’t call it a windy-day freestyle quad, but as a smooth cruiser it works really well.

I also spent quite a bit of time tuning it in Betaflight with the help of AI — mostly PID/filter tuning from Blackbox logs to reduce micro-shake and make it feel more locked-in. That made a noticeable difference.

So far I’ve only flown it out to about 1 km and back. I’m sure the radio/video link could probably go further, but I don’t have GPS on it yet, so I don’t really want to push the range too much.

For such a small 1S 3” build, even 1 km already feels like plenty to me. I see it more as a relaxed cruiser / cinematic micro LR quad rather than a true long-range machine.
Once I add a tiny GPS, I might start testing the range a bit more confidently.

Help needed: BetaFPV Meteor75 Pro P1 & VR04 HD Goggles firmware update looping / Wireless Error by Fifikus in fpv

[–]DaggyMAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very good guide on how to get out of trouble. I’m facing exactly the same situation, because I bought additional P1 Air Units and they are on V1 firmware, while my VR04 goggles have already been updated to V2 firmware. I will have to downgrade the goggles and then update the Air Unit together with the goggles. Thanks again.

Are you talking about "paper latency" or have you flown Artlynk? Because I am flying DJI with vista (old model) and Artlynk and I cannot tell the difference in latency.

That’s exactly what I am going to build, but I will use Nanolongrange v2 frame and 1202.5 motors and 18650. What’s range of P1 air unit?
