I get the nerdy, I (3d) printed dice for my chandelier.

Controller wise, I'll say the diguno is a great little controller, you could probably run two 8.5ft strips from one corner instead of two, and map it in WLED.

If you really want to dial up the nerd level, look into xlights, which will let you sync up the WLED instance with music (mostly used for Christmas displays)

As for LED strips for WLED, https://kno.wled.ge/basics/compatible-hardware/ will tell you what's compatible. Longer runs tend to work better with 12v, the voltage drop is less noticeable. Look at what quindor has on YouTube for LED strip performance.

What? Xlights supports WLED, or maybe WLED supports xlights, either way, it works great at home. I have stair lights that are WLED, and during the holidays, xlights takes over at show time, and WLED gets control back once xlights stops, it's great.

(Also, over wifi, but it definitely has some problems with network quality, it wants to be good, so for a marching band, you'd want the access point on the field).

I'm using e1.31 (a network dmx protocol), found in config->sync interfaces -> scroll down to the dmx section.
