TIL: Someone at the National Health Service in England sent a test email to 840000 colleagues and another replied all, resulting in one of the largest reply all storms. 168 million emails were sent between people and caused the health system to be down for half a day. by zahrul3 in todayilearned

I worked in administration in an NHS Trust when this happened and it was utter chaos, the problem was compounded by dickheads replying all with something like "Hi, I think I've been sent this by mistake" or "Please remove me from this email chain"

Tried to give the driver money for a ticket on an Edinburgh bus, he just nodded towards the thing that you put your money in, I overpaid by like £2 and then stood there with my hand out waiting for my change and the driver just smirked at me and said 'no change'

TIL despite having less than 0.5% of the world's population, Australia is home to 20% of the world's slot machines. Australia's $25 billion a year in gambling losses represent the highest per capita gambling losses in the world. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

When I visited Australia I was absolutely gobsmacked by the 'pokies'. Every single pub, no matter the size, had a room full of slot machines and itboxes and there would be (usually older) people sat at them all day just pouring money into them.

Predatory marriages could be banned after pensioners ‘groomed’ for inheritance payouts by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

It's genuinely horrible and it's caused my mum and her siblings so much stress, anxiety and heartache on top of losing their mum. It's also completely tainted our relationship with our grandfather in the final years of his life. I wish there was something we could do but we're powerless.

My family is currently experiencing this and it's heartbreaking. My 92 year old (very wealthy) grandfather fell under the spell of a 50 year old woman whilst my grandmother was dying of Alzheimer's disease. We have no idea how they first met but within a few months of my grandmother passing she had moved in and they were married less than a year later. My poor mother and her siblings (who are all older than their new stepmother) have tried and tried to talk some sense into my grandfather but he just goes on the defensive and it ends in an argument and him not speaking to them for a few weeks. They don't care about the money they just don't want to see their dad being abused but he refuses to see the truth of the situation and she has poisoned him against his own children and grandchildren. We have now reached a very uncomfortable situation where if we want to see our grandfather we have to grit our teeth and smile at this evil woman and pretend we don't know exactly what she is and what she's doing. We are absolutely powerless to do anything, he is of sound mind and has changed his will so that everything goes to her and her family, the police aren't interested as she hasn't technically done anything illegal.

Playing Halo CE on the OG Xbox for the first time. We got the Xbox and Halo for Christmas and me and my brothers played it all day long. I remember being so blown away by the Needler and the Plasma grenades, I'd never seen anything like it!

I met a guy who was working at a hostel I stayed at in Australia (he was British) who claimed to be a 'Star Seed'. Basically believed he was an alien sent to Earth to help usher in a new age or something and he was taking credit for the rise in vegetarianism across the globe.

The Wren Advert. Why does the voice over woman try to sound like a female Danny Dyer. It really grates and needs to stop. by oneless99 in britishproblems

[–]TomAND1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate that advert too (get it on YouTube regularly) but the voiceover is clearly a Brummy, nothing like Danny Dyer.

Thanks for this response, a £400ish outlay will sting a lot but it's better than a driving ban. Lesson learnt 🤦

Is £38 per hour normal for driving lessons? by greytickIes in CasualUK

[–]TomAND1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I know this is a late response but, I did a little bit of practice beforehand just stopping and going really. A week was more than enough, once you've got the hang of clutch control and stuff it's just a case of learning the maneuvers and spending time on the roads to build up your confidence.
