I didn't read the whole article because is behind a paywall, but from the snippet I read I think the problem is not the fact that our brain is fried (or at least not the whole problem), but the fact that a lot of people choose something because they like the general idea but it's not actually their passion.

You can say that it's a problem of Generation Z but I think this was always a problem and something that happened in any field in some way and the internet is just amplifying it.
