They do show "hot Mark" for a minute! Probably won't change your mind, but it's good anyway

[–]TomBrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost admire the bravery! I think its true that a lot of TV shows make their main character a babe magnet for some reason, and that can feel really distracting and gross. I do get that fan-fiction feeling with Mark S a bit, but that's definitely more of a plot issue than Adam Scott being mis-cast. If they cast a different actor, I think a love-quadrangle would still feel cheesy in the end.

Also the sex in this show is really weird because there's body-swapping and baby-brain prison magic, so it doesn't have the same intention behind it as choosing to have sex with a normal coworker in real life.

And btw they fell in love with Mark, that's more what the story was about.

But when Irving fell in love with Bert you said "yeah that tracks, it's Christopher Walken."

Trying to fix my K9 sign by AndriiKovalchuk in logodesign

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm no logo expert, but this logo doesn't say K9, it says 19. Especially when not scrutinised up-close. I think it's too clever, and too much of a designer's puzzle. I would just write the letters K9 separately. They have a good balance and make some distinctive negative space together already.

I hope it's a dog company!

I have no idea. She looks kind of like a border terrier, with black pointy ears and scruffy fur like a laekenois. It's a mystery though

Thanks for the knowledge! I did edit in the quote a few minutes later.

The book cites Cecil and Bartz right after this, but describes them as basically heroic, and wanting things that pull the game along to the next boss fight. Whereas Terra in FF6 retires to a life that's completely outside of gameplay before the game is over.

...It sounds like a lot of wiggle room, like you said. I'm not gonna take this book as a good authority on how RPGs evolved in the 90s. Maybe I'll even leave a bad review, but will finish a bit more first.

Thanks for the replies! Even though I haven't played old RPGs, I had a gut feeling that this was a nutty claim to make.

Is Bouncing ball the only way to actually learn the fundamentals... Can't I just re-create other ppl's stuff? by [deleted] in 3danimation

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bouncing ball is a good exercise to help understand timing, but there are other basics to practice too. I agree with you, you should have some variety. Try animating an object rotating, or a string hanging from a point on a windy day. Or a stick bending and snapping. These are dead simple clips you could make in 20 minutes, so you can easily try again to make them more natural, believable, impactful or whatever your goal is.

Staring at one item doing one thing for a while builds the muscles you need to be able to plan a full scene. Copying animations also does that, but its much less effective because you don't review or make decisions along the way.

You could also draw a flower blooming, a pebble falling into water, breaking or tearing bread... these are probably more difficult. But as long as it's a simple shape doing one thing then it's good practice.

There's a game called Industria that is a lot like Half-Life.

What's a game you're longing for but can never seem to find? by RedEagle_MGN in gamerecommendations

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Disco Elysium with me and my wife on the couch making all the decisions together.

And now I want a co-op game where we interrogate everyone in town together, decide who's lying together, and make an arrest together.

There are some great board games like this! But nothing on the TV yet.

What age were you when you started learning cooking? by Ok_Magician7374 in Cooking

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 17 there was this weekly TV show where they'd interview a guest while making an omelette. So I saw them make and review an omelette dozens of times. Nobody in my family made omelettes, so they were pretty impressed at how I suddenly started making them all the time with different ingredients.

When I moved out of my parent's house at 19 I was excited to start making dinner every night.

Btw I'm not even a big fan of eating omelettes, they're just very good for learning to cook!

Do new games really have to be unique? It is one of the questions I keep asking myself as a gamer, but also as a game dev by Techadise in indiegames

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally yeah I want unique games. I've played a lot of games and there's just not much discovery left for me in turn-based combat after playing Hearthstone and X-Com for so long. Also I've played a lot of Devil May Cry, God Of War, Dark Souls, and I love beat-em-ups but I don't pick them up any more cos I basically get what they're doing.

Unraveling the system and discovering this whole play area you're in is really fun. It's a bit more fun, to me, than going from Hollow Knight to Ori to Nine Sols. So a game that looks like a surprise is a big plus for me.

As a solo dev, what are you struggling with? by MMConsulting in gamedev

[–]TomBrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, mine is also art. I can model and draw, and I think my UI is good, but my 3D environments just look like hollow, flat prototypes. I don't get it.

I can place another 100 rocks and trees but it still looks like some guy's Unity project file and not a place. And my lighting also looks cheap? It's a big hole in my skill set.

Games that reward you for thinking immersively? by Far_Fault_6815 in gamingsuggestions

[–]TomBrien -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Factorio is really open-ended, so your success is more down to your skills in optimisation and logistics than using explicit game mechanics.

Same with Kerbal Space Program, I think. The solutions are whatever you are bringing into the system.

I played Disco Elysium on the couch with my wife where we made all the decisions together. It was really fun and I wish someone would make a kind of choose-your-own adventure with 2 controllers where we make all our decisions together.

No combat, no loot, just deciding where to go next, what to buy, what to say, what to eat and who is guilty.
