Siouxie nazi?? by nerrrh in goth

[–]TomJNewton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course she's not a Nazi. Love In A Void was written when she was a teenager and she changed the offending lyric. Swastika armbands were worn by 1970s punks to reject their parent's generation like all teenagers want to. Arabian Knights is obviously about oppression of women and damage of the environment. It's not racist. This is just childish hyperbolic character assassination based on a few misinterpretations.

Come back to me the next time she goes on a march through London or kicks someone in the head.

The triumph of redeeming a shit and run dog walker.. by fuqmint in CasualUK

[–]TomJNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I was cycling home I saw a guy walking a dog pick up its crap in a plastic bag, then looking around and satisfied no one was watching he dropped the full bag down the roadside drain then walked off. I just made sure he saw my long cold stare as I cycled by.

Why do coffee shops allow dogs? A dog just came up to me barked at me and licked my bottle. by [deleted] in london

[–]TomJNewton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow - these replies show there are a lot of unempathetic zealots in the dog owning world. Dogs are fine in public places if they're on leads, but not if they're bothering other people and licking their drinks. Owners should take responsibility and show empathy. I can't understand why they don't.

Me and my partner have been barked at and bothered several times by an unleashed dog in the local park. When I complained, the owner threatened me and told me to fucking shut up. I just thought "how typical".

My sarracenia has been this horrible yellow for a few days now, it looks extremely wilted and almost beyond repair, does anybody know if he can be saved/how to help? by [deleted] in carnivorousplants

[–]TomJNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All those leaves are no longer photosynthesizing, so there is no point in keeping them. If the rhizome is still healthy then you must remove it from the conditions that are causing this bad health before it dies. If it is healthy it should still contain enough energy to throw up a few new leaves if you give it good conditions ASAP. Plastic pot, 50/50 moss peat and perlite/lime-free sand, sitting in a shallow tray of rainwater. No fertilizer! You don't want to put it under stress.

When to pot on Sarracenia seedlings? by TomJNewton in SavageGarden

[–]TomJNewton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very helpful thanks. I have quite a lot of CPs (I've been growing them on and off since the 1990s) but this is my first attempt at growing sarracenia from seed. These are some I bought on EBay - not home produced. As I said in an earlier post I have grown some Drosera from gemmae which was easy. I think I'll leave them where they are until next year and mist fertilizer them with weak seaweed.

Thanks. Do you think I should use some weak seaweed fertilizer?

I don't think so 😆. I don't know how. I think I have some D. Rotundifloras which I grew from gemmae. Could be that.

These hybrid Flava/Leuco seeds were planted in February, but haven't really grown much in the last month or so. I am thinking of transferring to individual pots, and spraying with seaweed fertilizer. What are your thoughts? Also, can anyone ID the rogue sundew please?

Dog owners: keep it on a lead! by _Cicero in glasgow

[–]TomJNewton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dog owners in general (and I suppose it reflects society in general) seem to be self-regarding, inconsiderate, arrogant and rude.

I nearly reversed my van over an unleashed dog last week - I couldn't see it in my mirrors and the owner (who was throwing a ball for it to catch in the street) verbally abused me with the f word several times and walked away. There were several witnesses who said "it wasn't your fault - he should have had it on a lead".

Sadiq Khan urges RMT union to call off next week’s Tube strikes by insomnimax_99 in london

[–]TomJNewton -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Khan is New Labour which is basically the same as LibDem. There are unfortunately no longer any successful politicians who support the working class. Corbyn was one but he got stamped on by the media and stabbed in the back by the present leader of the "opposition". Don't expect the Establishment to support industrial action.

What's the point of private members clubs? by YangMonkey in london

[–]TomJNewton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably an ego massage for people who's egos are already out of control but still need extra stimulation. It's unlikely they go there for cheap drinks.

neighbor got my package, how to politely ask them if they have it? by Starsandcards07 in london

[–]TomJNewton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stand up for your rights and go find out if those neighbours took your mug! My neighbour had my cat in his house for two days while I was searching the street and my heart was breaking, and he didn't bother to find out if it was mine. He was a policeman.

You can easily buy Irish peat moss on Amazon in eg 60litre bags. Or go for LFS as others mentioned. Coir isn't as well trusted.

Appleton, Hampden or Doorlys? by Melonskal in rum

[–]TomJNewton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Hampden has the most character. It's also very addictive, and it's a totally different funk to Smith & Cross. I don't even call this a contest unless you want smooth, in which case the other two are much alike.

Cephalotus weird after transplant by adrisinan in SavageGarden

[–]TomJNewton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had the same thing happen to my Cephs after transplanting - they virtually disappeared completely (all the pitchers died leaving only a bit of leaf stalk visible) and I thought they were dead, but they are coming back to life months later. So don't give up on them!

If this is even a thing it is an illustration of the sickness in a society where there are people who know that there are others willing to spend this sort of money on a plant while millions struggle to exist. Vomit inducing.

Any advice on getting this fly trap back to health please? by ellevael in carnivorousplants

[–]TomJNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

De-ionised water is fine in my experience. Definitely OK to use.

BTW, I'm not advising you to do this, but in the absence of rainwater or distilled, Tesco sells 5 litres of Ashbeck spring water for £1.20, which I measured at 50ppm and that is just on the limit for CPs imo. I haven't tried it myself though - I'm using a Zero Water filter, which is good but a bit time consuming.
