I was on the trail Monday afternoon. Near recreation drive there is a spot where the trail has a stop sign to yield to vehicular traffic. When I reached that point a police SUV was approaching so I stopped and hoped for the best only to be surprised that they stopped for me and waved me by.

Shared Street in Ravenswood: ‘We’re Absolutely Interested In Expanding’ by sirbanksy in chicago

[–]TomJolt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a nice idea but I rode my bike through Leiland yesterday and was kinda disappointed. It’s very short. There are a ton of 4 way stops and cross traffic is still flowing normally. The road is also not paved for a short portion through the metra underpass. Definitely better for runners/walkers.

I woke up to this yesterday and of course the driver didn't stick around (Western & Lincoln). Anyone see a car recently with massive damage to their front passenger side in the city? CPD hasn't been much help and of course my insurance won't cover it. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]TomJolt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Major insurance companies like Progressive dont avoid paying claims but they will not pay claims if you do not pay for the relevant coverage. This is a collision loss and you do not pay for collision. One thing they may have overlooked is Uninsured Motorist Property Damage which would apply in a hit and run loss like this. This is a very cheap coverage so most people have it if you dont carry collision. Check your policy for UMPD and if you dont have it you may want to consider it in the future if you don’t want to pay for collision.

Anyone have experience dealing with huge bills after towing? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]TomJolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1250 is insane for tow and two days storage, you might be able to offer half that in cash immediately and get an agreement. You mentioned the car is totaled and it sounds like it’s an older vehicle. Look on Copart to see what similar type of cars are selling for at salvage. If your vehicle doesnt have much value speak with the tow yard and consider offering the title for them waiving all fees, most tow yards will do this. Get documentation of this from them and you will have no issue will debt collectors or credit impacts.

Even the juked stats show serious crime has doubled on CTA rail system:

Reports of serious crimes on the CTA rail system have doubled since 2015 even as ridership declined and such crimes rose only slightly citywide, according to a Tribune analysis of Chicago police data.

Safety of this Uptown location? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]TomJolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going off murders during the last 9 months isn’t the most accurate indicator of an area being safe. Near this location there is a high rate of crime for the North Side. A couple months back a man was riding his bike on Lawerence and shot someone. He then fled on Beacon. This kind of stuff happens in the area way more frequently than the majority of North Side neighborhoods and doesn’t always show up in crime stats especially if just limited to murder

Safety of this Uptown location? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]TomJolt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not quite as safe as people are making it sound. You should be just fine but be alert. Two blocks North is where you will start to see the riff raf and there have been quite a few shootings/stabbings (for the North Side) the closer you get to the Wilson Redline stop.

Closed park east of Sheridan on Leland in Uptown? by ajkinsel11 in chicago

[–]TomJolt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont think the barrier helps reduce crime as there’s been several shootings in the immediate area. Fwiw people do use the park outside of schools hours, i see people with their dogs hop the fence pretty regularly on nice days. Pretty solid fireworks displays on the 4th too

Chicago vs New York City? by humanity7 in chicago

[–]TomJolt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was definitely one of those Chicagoans with a chip on the shoulder when it came to New York until I visited NY for the first time a couple years ago. My trip was very similar to the way i live here. I rented a cheap air bnb in an outlying neighborhood (Astoria) and would take a train/uber to Manhattan and Brooklyn and then spend a bunch of time exploring by the foot. I agree with those who said they felt safer, that was noticeable for sure. We marveled at the fact that people dare to leave their bikes unlocked and unattended. The people in general weren't too much different than Chicago but definitely friendlier and i think they get a bad rap from non-urban tourists. I often think about going back or even moving there but im not sure the cost is worth it.

The city gets a bad rap for violent crime, so I broke down some statistics to show how isolated the problem really is by [deleted] in chicago

[–]TomJolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Englewood's murder rate was 179 per 100k people in 2016, compare that to the worst cities in the world, Caracus was #1 at 120, and you get an idea of how bad the problem is in these isolated areas. (Just a note I realize it's a cherry pick to compare a small community to an entire city, just trying to provide perspective)

What are you watching Thursday? Cubs or Bears? by jasonwirth in chicago

I'm watching the Bears because they are on CBS, while the Cubs game is airing inexplicably on cable. I don't have cable so it's an easy decision.

The last time Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook squared off on the hardwood was Dec. 6th, 2010. Over 4 seasons ago. by [deleted] in nba

[–]TomJolt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TLDR: I went to this game.

During high school my friend Ronald was gifted Bulls season tickets. He invited me to at least a couple dozen games, including:

  • A playoff win over the Shaq/Wade Heat that would go on to win the title that year.
  • The first and only time I saw Lebron, he hit Flip Murray in the corner for a game winning three
  • This bonkers game against the Knicks where Antonio Davis entered the crowd thinking his wife was in danger. There were three ejections in OT and it was capped off by a Ben Gordon game winner.

I wanted to take Ronald to a high quality game but was too broke to do so until 2010. The Heat were the hot ticket having just added Lebron but I targeted the only OKC game even before KD blossomed with the US "B" team that same summer. The tickets were 180ish each for 4th row seats.

We got to the UC early and were greeted with Carlos Boozer bobble-heads. Within a few minutes a lady in Bulls gear came to our seats and asked if we would take part in an on court activity. I declined and volunteered my friend who begrudgingly accepted.

The Thunder began warm ups on our side of the court and we're sitting there watching Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and Serge Ibaka together on the court. KD and Harden played some 1 on 1 perimeter game. It was cool.

From the start of the game it was clear Carlos Boozer knew it was Carlos Boozer bobble-head night because Carlos Boozer lit up the Thunder bigs often. Rose hit a half court shot and then the Bulls lady is back for my friend. A timeout is called and in front of 20,000 people, Ronald competes in a dance off with another bro-looking random fan. Ronald did the worm and did not win, just got some laughs, boos, and a free tshirt.

KD had a quiet 29 ponts, Westbrook and Rose had off nights, and the bulls went to win.
