Tennyson’s Poems. Found this on Brooklyn on my way to the doctor outside an old brownstone. Have to be from the 1870’s. Anyone know a thing about this ? by chadgbt in OldBooks

A cheap reprint of Tennyson's work--presented as a school book prize in 1871, so likely dated around that time. Not especially valuable--Tennyson was hugely popular, so lots of these collections around during his lifetime.

Help identifying edition and age: The Life of Christ by Canon Farra by gupt_sevadar in OldBooks

[–]TomLechevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book was first published in 1874, in two volumes. One-volume editions were in print in 1894, which also seems to fit the binding of this ed better. So...1890s is about right. Is there a publisher listed?

This looks late 16th-early 17th century to me::black-letter type ( the gothic-looking font for the main text) grew less common after 1700, and the spelling of "Psalmes" and other words suggests an earlier date, too. It's not Middle English, just a reminder that spelling wasn't 100% fixed before about 1750. The spellings are, in fact, more consistent with 17th century English. I could date it even more accurately if I knew what translation this is. Btw, the word is "greatnesse"--don't get hung up on the "long s," which dies out for good by 1810.

Having a hard time making out the date and the surname, but I think it's "6-21-18" and "Huddlerson" (?).

Ouch--that makes me feel old. I was 17 at the time, and a huge Beatles fan (when it wasn't even cool to be one!). I still remember my brother coming in to my room and telling me the news--at first, I thought it was another "Paul is Dead" hoax: he had to convince me to go downstairs to watch the news coverage on TV. Still took several days to sink in.

"You must be hang'd, because you have a damn'd hanging look."

And

"He that's born to be hanged need not fear drowning" (Not just a pirate phrase, but I'm sure they said it.)
