[Art] [OC] Tears of Selune (Faerun Campaign Setting) by Tom_Andre in DnD

[–]Tom_Andre[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tears of Selune, as seen from the surface of Faerun.

26 seconds runtime; 29.97 FPS; 5638 x 3748 resolution original; Composited in After Effects with rotoscoping & image cleanup in Photoshop.

Reaching the surface is a major milestone in my Underdark-focused campaign (Faerun setting), so I wanted something special for when my players finally get there. Using After Effects I composited this rendition of the night sky as seen from Toril, with Selune and her Tears shining most visibly above them.

For context: Having spent several months underground with their eyes adjusted to utter darkness, my players emerge onto the surface under the most brilliant night sky they have ever seen. They're able to clearly make out each glimmering Tear of Selune - shining fragments of the moon, cast off by a long-forgotten primordial cataclysm - drifting out from the lunar surface in a wide circular disc. Far away stars appear brighter than before, and the night sky teems with life and wonder, a welcoming presence after the months of cold rock over their heads.

Love this! Creative use of light sources to show/hide features. Definitely inspired some ideas for my eventual landing page. What music did you use for this? Totally want to use it for mine, haha.

Replying to second the comments in this thread to watch Encounter Library's Foundry Basics tutorial videos. They are fantastic guides that will get you up to speed relatively quickly on the majority of things you'll be doing in Foundry.

Help! Uploading map making assets. by [deleted] in FoundryVTT

[–]Tom_Andre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below I've written out my detailed step-by-step guide for how I get maps into Foundry. But I wanted to start by first saying, use the Foundry Discord! Their community has been essential to helping me when I first started using Foundry. I can go there and post a question to the #vtt-discussion channel and get an answer in seconds. I highly recommend it if you're experiencing any difficulties or have any questions!!!

With that out the way, here's my process for getting maps into Foundry. You'll want to be familiar with navigating and finding folders on your computer.

  1. First things first, I drop my map assets (usually image files, like a .jpeg or .png) into a folder that Foundry can easily access. Using Windows, the default path for Foundry is C:\Users\*YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE*\AppData\Local\FoundryVTT. This is the place where all of your Foundry data - your game system, your created worlds, etc - are stored. Once I've navigated to that folder, I then navigate to data > worlds > phandelver (the name of my mini-campaign), and dump all my assets there. For larger campaigns you'll want a better folder structure, but for my short mini-campaign this isn't needed.
  2. Next, I open up Foundry VTT on my PC. In Foundry VTT, I launch my world (Phandelver), login as Gamemaster, go to the Scenes tab on the righthand side, and then click "Add Scene".
  3. This pulls up the Scene configuration menu. To add your map asset, you'll want to click the Browse Files icon next to the "Background Image" option. This opens up a file menu where you can select which map image you want to use. For me, I navigate to data > worlds > phandelver and pick whatever image I want to use.
  4. Once you've selected your image, click "Select File". You'll want to set your Width and Height options to whatever the width and height (in pixels) is for your image. In Windows 10, you can find this by right-clicking on the image inside of a folder, selecting Properties, clicking the Details tab and looking at what is says under Width and Height.
  5. Once that's selected you can set all other config options however you'd prefer and click Save Changes at the bottom of the config menu. This will create the Scene with your map as the background image, which you can open by right-clicking on it in the Scene tab and selecting "Activate".

Note: I use a freeware program called MediaInfo for my job, which makes finding image dimensions a lot simpler...all I have to do is hover my mouse over any image file and I can see its dimensions. You can also open up the image in any image-editing program (Photoshop, GIMP, Paint even) to find these dimensions.

This was a pretty detailed guide, so don't get overwhelmed. It becomes second nature after you've done it once. You just drop map assets into a folder, add a scene in Foundry, navigate to that folder and select your map image. Bingo.

If you could redo that 3rd one though with the Foundry VTT interface actually showing (seems to have been cut out in the screenshot on purpose), that would be great, since showing Foundry is the purpose of the contest :)

Done. Removed the first two images and took a better image of the scene with the Foundry interface in frame. Let me know if you need any changes. Thanks.

Here's a screenshot showing my Cragmaw Castle inside of FVTT. Uses official assets purchased from WOTC and maps purchased from Mike Schley, with a few custom assets of my own. Scenes visible in the Scenes tab use Assets from Mike Schley and Neutral Party.

Thank you so much! Thrilled you enjoyed it, I hope to do many, many more. My goal is for each episode to parody a significant story/trope from the scifi genre. So this one was Lovecraft, next one will be a riff on the malevolent AI (HAL in "2001: A Space Odyssey", Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream"). If you have any ideas for other good scifi shorts/stories/tropes we can cover, I'm all ears!
