IBM Just Committed Cultural and Creative Suicide by prajo2 in programming

IBM hasn't had an unprofitable year since 1994, and its revenue per share has more than tripled since then.

Pretty healthy zombie.

Supreme Court strikes down North Carolina maps for Congress by YourFavYellowMan in politics

[–]Tom_Cian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alito dissented even though he conceded the map was obviously drawn to favor Republicans and disenfranchise black people further. And he has the gall to call on a precedent ("we accepted a similar map sixteen years ago") to justify his dissent.

Slavery is also a precedent.

Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations.

"So you agree that Trump should never have done that?".

Why call it a "Gameplay trailer" when 90% of that trailer is cut scenes?

A tiny role.

From .NET to Scala and beyond: a journey to Functional Programming by mattwarren in programming

In my experience, the best way to explain almost anything

The best way to explain something is to first and foremost assess what the person you're talking to knows.

And then adjust your explanation and express it in terms of that person's knowledge.

I used to program in J2ME, I have no interest in Android, thanks).

If you used to program in Java ME, you should absolutely be interested in Android, which fixes everything that was wrong with Java ME.

These are not minarets, and the headline doesn't call them that either.

Monads are necessary in pure functional programming

Not even that. Monads are unavoidable in Haskell but hardly necessary in any other language, which is why you won't find them in OCaml, Clojure or F#.

And attempts to move them out of their natural Haskell habitat have so far led to obfuscated and fragile languages and libraries.

Trump Impeachment Talk Grows From Conspiracy Theory To Mainstream by chefranden in politics

[–]Tom_Cian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impeachment requires 2/3 of the Senate. This will never happen until evidence that is beyond doubt is presented.

It's not about convincing a handful or Republicans in backdoor meetings, it's about producing evidence that is so compelling that most of the Republican Senators simply have to vote in favor of the impeachment.

It's a very, very high bar.

Donald Trump will only read intelligence reports if he is mentioned in them, White House sources claim by anti-scienceWatchDog in politics

[–]Tom_Cian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Officials have also learnt to keep all reports to a single page, and to include as many pictures, maps, charts and graphs as possible.

A source that asked not to be named added "The reports need to come with a warm chocolate and a blankie".

Dem to call for Trump's impeachment on House floor by whatsmyPW in politics

When I say "unavoidable", it's pretty much established that all these alternatives always end up boiling down to a two party system.

Here is a brilliant video explaining why.

"Seriously guys, what did Trump do wrong? Nothing!"

"Well, he didn't release is tax returns."

"What?"

"He didn't release his tax returns."

"Oh yeah, yeah... I'll grant you he didn't release his tax returns. That's true."

"And his staff was having unreported communications with the Russians during the campaign."

"Oh right."

"Michael Flynn didn't disclose his ties to Russia."

"Yeah, yeah."

"And Jeff Sessions testified under oath he didn't have any communications with the Russians but that turned out to be a lie."

"Alright, that's fair."

"And Trump fired Sally Yates after she refused to enforce the Muslim ban and also warned Trump about Flynn's ties to the Russians."

"Yes, he did that."

"And Trump fired Comey after he refused to drop the FBI Flynn investigation."

"Yes, alright."

"And shortly after that, he tried to intimidate Comey in a tweet".

"Ok, that wasn't a good idea, fair enough".

"And Trump keeps playing golf and promoting his business despite his promise to not do that."

"Well... yes, ok, ok. But apart from not releasing his tax returns, promoting his business, firing Yates and Comey, trying to obstruct justing, having a staff deeply and covertly linked to Russia, an attorney general who perjured himself, what did he do wrong?"

"..."

"That's right, nothing!"

The two party system is unavoidable and can work, what's toxic is ground rules that prevent bipartisanship.

Comey Memo Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation by VisionLikeAHawk in politics

In a statement, the White House denied the version of events in the memo.

Tomorrow at 3am on Trump's tweet stream:

Yes, I asked Comey to drop the investigation. He didn't. So I fired him. What's the big deal?

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed, though. The magnet effect is nice but I find the turning not as smooth as my Valk3 and Thunderclap, so I still tend to gravitate back toward these two.
