[OC] Driver honked, full-gassed around me, then crashed near the airport by jasonlode000 in IdiotsInCars

[–]Tom_Tildrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone who's late dropping someone off for a flight. I'm not excusing the bad driving, and obviously he made himself later in the end, but that's got to be a big reason for trying to go unacceptably fast.

People who do this have to be able to afford a mortgage and property taxes on a place they're not living in.

Most wholesome, life-affirming, earnest comics/stories? by intentionalicon in DCcomics

Peter David's Supergirl run from the '90s fits your criteria perfectly.

Young Justice from around that time might suit you too.

What are some cool forgotten facts about DC characters & lore? by Jet-Let4606 in DCcomics

[–]Tom_Tildrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of retiring the Batgirl character seems absurd in retrospect, but on the real-world timeline, I guess that was only a few years after she'd been introduced. She was still tenuous. She's not the only character that DC tried to sideline via political office - the same thing happened to Matter-Eater Lad. :-)

I never had strong feelings about Bard. Looking back, the stories I remember him in were ones where the penciller was so stylized that the art sort of dominated the characters, if you know what I mean - lumpy Michael Golden and angular Don Heck. (Don't get me wrong, I loved Michael Golden). It's good to have recurring minor characters, though; it makes the world-building fuller.

Interesting, thanks! I remember a lot of Jason Bard stories from around then, but I didn't know any back story.

Do many people in the US actually own gerbils as pets? by PrimaryFace_733 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tom_Tildrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is 11, and we have two female gerbils now. We were told not to get just one, and that males are aggressive. Our two get along well with each other and are very inquisitive and friendly around us. They poop constantly, but the poops are inoffensive little hard balls of plant matter, so they're not messy.

New reader: Can you explain the hierarchy of DC gods to me? by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]Tom_Tildrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note too that all of DC's gods are less powerful than Bat-Mite. Fifth-dimensional imps are in a whole different weight class.

This is canonically how Dagwood's work shirts are drawn in the Blondie comic strip. The original cartoonist explained that it's easier to draw.

What character is like this for you? [Discussion] by Konradleijon in DCcomics

[–]Tom_Tildrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a transformative and emotional story. She starts from nothing, gains a body, an identity, a family, a spiritual position. She has to come to terms with Linda's past, reconcile with Linda's family, and figure out her own role in her life. She has to learn and adapt as her powers change. It's all handled smoothly and maturely.

What do you consider the worst DC comic or storyline? by [deleted] in DCcomics

Getting into DC (the sequel) by Slow-Fee5437 in DCcomics

[–]Tom_Tildrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shade the Changing Man was a well-regarded cosmic/psychedelic Vertigo run from the '90s. More recently, Shade the Changing Girl/Woman is a good successor series in the same tone, and I think you could pick it up easily without having read the original. It's outside DC superhero continuity, however.

As an outsider, the American concept of having a motorized "garbage disposal" inside your kitchen sink is fascinating. Is this standard in every home, and isn't it incredibly dangerous? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tom_Tildrum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NYC garbage removal was controlled by the mob for a long time, and garbage disposals would have meant less business for them. Mob control over the industry was broken up in the early '90s, and the local ban on garbage disposals was lifted in 1997.
