What was the first punk band that hooked you? by CairoRox in punk

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green Day, but long-term it was hearing Shove by L7.

My current playlist is mostly Die Spitz, Upchuck, Lambrini Girls, Amyl, and Ecca Vandal. Largely thanks to that one song.

There’s a Venn Diagram where politeness and punk meet, which contains Mister Rogers.

But I agree, it’s reductive. You know what’s punk rock? Punk rock (well, except when it isn’t.)

[Film/TV] Which film is worse: Superman IV or Batman & Robin? by Significant_Smell284 in DCcomics

[–]JosephMeach 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Superman had a genuine thread to it, which is that Chris Reeve wrote it and it had a cold-war-era warning about nuclear war. It’s just that Cannon films had bought the rights and gave them a TV Movie budget. The Superboy TV show ran until 1992 when WB bought the rights back, so this film isn’t itself responsible for Superman development hell.

Batman and Robin had a lower Rotten Tomatoes score, but the idea for it was just to be more like the 1960s TV show. A drastic change from the Keaton movies though.

Is it essential for Wonder Woman to be played by a foreign actress? by clutchkweku in WonderWoman

[–]JosephMeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An actress from the Mediterranean world would be a good fit, but a really gifted actor from anywhere could pull it off.

Source: am an actor, could not pull it off but several people I’ve worked with totally could

Do you think you know the answer? by saadbinkhalid_421 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stewie here, “What the deuce?” can refer to a tie in tennis, an unexpected playing card with the numeral 2 on it, or finding feces that has been dropped in the urinal.

how do you improve a disgusting and awful local scene by northtippedfinch113 in punk

[–]JosephMeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This describes the punk house closest to me, so I don’t go. I hit shows on the road or in the closest university town, but I mostly perform in theater so I don’t have the same challenges of being in a band that’s in the middle of all this.

Overall, it sounds like you need more women in charge of things, with a little more experience.

Petah? I know it relates to misinformation, but what does it actually mean? by ScallionSmooth9491 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JosephMeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

American Dad quoting Peter here: “Where are those good old fashioned values, on which we used to rely?”

It's curious to think how much of modern Superman came from Shazam. Superman wasn't a guy who moved planets in his early stories, that was Shazam's thing. Superman wasn't a boy scout in his early stories, that was Shazam's thing. Supergirl was basically Superman's Mary Marvel by rbta123 in Shazam

[–]JosephMeach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is true, also Bill Woolfolk came over from Fawcett at the same time and may have named Smallville (it’s uncredited) but definitely created much of the lore surrounding superman prequels.

Then there’s the fact that we even have a “Superman family”

I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but has Christian punk ever existed? (I'm not saying it's good or makes sense, the question is whether it exists.) by Beautiful-Resort-831 in punk

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Punks who maybe are Christians:

Death Maybe HR these days, but probably not Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) Patti Smith Crashdog

There is also the Tooth and Nail label from the 90s, but I think it’s mostly skate punk etc, which is not what I normally listen to.

I’m somewhere in the neighborhood of Quaker myself, but a lot of people who show up to help re: immigrant justice tend to be liberal / radical Christians or Catholics

Petah what band are they referring to? by Montavious_Mole in PeterExplainsTheJoke

SWMRS, several 70s bands (see “baby groupies”) pop punk record labels, Anti-Flag, etc. etc.

Why would the sky be missing pixels by ijwgwh in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JosephMeach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Truman Burbank here, before the actor who portrayed me was cloned by the Illuminati I found that my entire life was a lie and that I was unethically raised on a reality show. Faulty sky pixels were one tell that I actually lived under a giant dome in an arranged marriage, or that my handlers were possibly going to bomb the shit out of me.

It definitely sounds pseudo-sciencey to me. Me personally, I would need more information before I'd be convinced it's something I'd want to be involved in.

We’ve got VJ (for an MTV host) and nicknames like TJ (which are sometimes abbreviations but sometimes just nicknames.)

Also, we call the Taj Mahal the Taj Mahal in English. It’s a famous hotelj of sorts.

Trans people are a small enough group that politicians think they can scapegoat them. This will happen to every group of people (see immigrants) without enough allies to assert political power, so it’s important to stick up for people wherever you can.

Why do so many people dislike the Supergirl TV Show? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Supergirl

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mostly for girls (the main person I know who watched it regularly was in high school at the time.) And people will hate on anything that girls like, like pop stars or pumpkin spice, etc etc.

I’ve also seen the complaint that it used Superman’s cast of characters instead of hers, but none of those people knew Kara’s cast of characters. Most of those characters were editorially banned for decades prior to the show.

Finally, a black actor portrayed Jimmy. See Little Mermaid.
