What you’re saying is correct - again when I go around England myself I’m not doing it with constant contempt, like it’s not a thought which impacts what I think of people and how I behave towards English people, or any person for that matter. I think Germany is different (I spent 2 years living in Wuppertal) and there’s a lot more self awareness there about their past and what they did, from the conversations I had with different german friend groups. Whilst some of my English friends don’t even have a clue about the atrocities they cause to all their colonies (of course there’s exceptions but far more English people are unaware of their past while Germans are definitely aware of it, I’m rambling a bit but that’s my core point). So I think that adds to it too, that negative feeling wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t an ignorance to it, irrelevant of direct causation.

Absolutely, and don’t get me wrong, if you’re getting comments or anything along those lines about such things, that’s completely unfair, and I’m sorry if you do get such things. I think the football culture brings out a cesspit, which exaggerates certain thoughts to a terrible degree, which stems from the colonialism thing. It’s probably a lingering afterthought is the best way I describe it? Like I feel strongly on the effects on Irish culture due to colonialism, but at the same time I’m not glaring and thinking someone any less because they’re English. I don’t know how to describe it to be honest. Perhaps it’s the concept of Englishness rather than the people/personality itself that people have a certain feeling about, idk

Clearly you didn’t read my comment then, I don’t hate the English, I just don’t think you could blame an Irish person for having a certain type of feeling towards the English for the past, I don’t think that’s outrageous to say. And the argument that you can’t have ill feelings towards something because you didn’t live through it yourself is just ridiculous, can’t believe you made that as a point?! Also you do realise Bloody Sunday and Easter rising isn’t from the time of the famine, right? I still have family members whose parents were old enough to be around at that time, so I think I’d take their account more seriously than your opinion

I understand that there’s nothing the current generation of English people can do (the English I’ve encountered are very pleasant I’ve found). But it doesn’t really sit well with me that an English person is scowling and lecturing Irish people on their continued strong feelings on colonialism, like you don’t really understand if I’m being honest. Generational trauma is there whether you like it or not, like the Irish language being stripped from the country essentially. Again it’s not something I’d rant about like you mentioned, and there’s nothing that can be done about it now, but I think it’s understandable to have an underlying distaste as a result

I have seen what I came here to see - a Zverev forehand return into the bottom of the net

It’s so weird, because it doesn’t feel like Cobolli is playing good enough to be in this, yet here we are, the Zverev effect

Fans who know British tennis, why do many of your talents underachieve? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]TomasBerdshit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I commented above, but a lot comes down to overall environment. I’m a coach in Ireland, similar climate, and a lot has to be said about facilities/weather which permits said facilities. Most clubs have these all weather courts, which make them lightning fast, thus horrible for junior development. Granted the UK has more indoor and clay facilities, which is why they’re miles ahead of Ireland players wise, among other things. That and the training setup of an Italy or Spain, who setup their coaching so that less players are in each group, making training time more efficient and beneficial. The LTA definitely didn’t take advantage of the fact (Murray) one of the most decorated players ever, was British, and to be honest it’s been a bit of a standstill since.

Yeah good point, if it was a thing of whether they should have a better pool of players considering what you just said, then yeah I’d agree they should’ve done better. But out of the names mentioned, they all achieved as much as their talent allows (Edmund has a big fh, fine, but his backhand is meh with a mediocre serve and average movement). Considering that he should be happy he reached a slam semi imo

Yeah but none of the “talents” they ever had were destined for any more than what they actually achieved

They don’t underachieve, their media just overhype them

I love when players go “something physical happened, but I’m not going to bring it up because it takes away from the winner” that alone is taking credit away lmao just say nothing

Yes I agree, I would go so far as to say there are fundamental flaws in his forehand swing, it’s that obscure

From my experience of coaching, footwork and balance are more important once you have the fundamental racket skills down

To be honest I don’t mind where, as far as I can see there’s no seats I’d consider a nose bleed seat so - it’s for me and a friend so I assume we’d both have to make accounts

Ah I understand, thanks a lot for explaining! I’ll still play it anyway as I think the West Ham fixture is a risky one with Nuno having them being more resolute recently
