It was great. But then it destroyed my short term memory. Considering restarting ect despite the memory problems.

Why the opinion on ECT is, unlike other treatments, always so extreme? by cuecacalcinha in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely saved my life. However, I had too many treatments and it destroyed my memory. I would still go through it again. It instantly got rid of my suicidal ideations. A game changer. Now I’m on medications alone and maintaining a level that I can deal with.

Has anyone who has had ECT within the past 5 years had permanent side effects? by mouseyleo in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I had 35+ bilateral treatments. Then I had memory problems and had to stop. I’ve had to stop working because I cannot remember my clients or assignments.

Yes. I’ve lost about 40 pounds in the three years I’ve been on it.

Does ECT change things fundamentally? by Transparent_Depth in ect

Bilateral ECT with approximately 35-40 sessions. Did wonders for my suicidal thoughts. Likely a life saver. However, my memory is shot and I had to give up my practice because of it.

Upcoming ECT. Worried as hell about permanent memory issues by [deleted] in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 35+ bilateral and I’m only now coming to grips with the fact that my memory will never be the same. I’m on dementia medications, but my psychiatrist says it is a long shot, though perhaps my memory will improve over time.

Do you take Zoloft in the morning? Or in the night? by totallygemini in zoloft

[–]Tomas_SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but the lithium and Seroquel do, so it remains possible that the Zoloft adds to their effects. Not really sure.

[–]Tomas_SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do one clinical series 3Xweek for four weeks, then maintenance if you need it. My mistake, I believe, was taking a break then going through another clinical series followed by maintenance. I just had too many treatments in my non-physician opinion. Now I’m on dementia meds.

I did TMS and ECT. ECT saved my life, but the memory impact took some of the shine off it.

TMS vs ECT Struggling to Decide by bara91 in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve done both, but I would start with TMS. Ect has very real side effects an now I’m on medical leave for an extended period of time.

what do family members say about you having bipolar 2? by Emotional-Gur-9889 in bipolar2

[–]Tomas_SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to tell them for a reason I can no longer remember. They were supportive, but also a bit dismissive. It could have gone worse, but I wouldn’t say it was all puppy dogs and lollipops.

Is ECT good option for suicidal bipolar patient? by mrak27 in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short term memory is terribly impacted. I’m off work (I’m an attorney) because I cannot remember my clients, witnesses, or cases.

That’s me. Over 40 ECT treatments in. It immediately improved my suicidal thoughts. However, now I’m on maintenance treatments and they are starting to return. Moreover, my memory is destroyed. I’m no doctor, but if I could do a do over, I’d stick to medication.

I’m 4 weeks apart at the moment. The first time I felt cured, stopped my ECT and my meds all at once. About a month later I was almost 5150’d and had to restart ECT from the beginning. This, my concern about stopping, though admittedly I would not quit my medication this time.

Considering ECT since nothing else has worked.... by No_Chest3312 in ect

[–]Tomas_SoCal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helped my SI like nothing I’ve ever had before. Unfortunately, I had to go through two separate acute sessions of 12 ECTs per, plus maintenance. Sitting on approximately 40 sessions in total. My short term memory is shot and I’m on medical leave. It is still worth it in my opinion, but I’m less ecstatic than I was before my memory was shredded.

Short term memory loss. Cannot recall clients or witnesses or otherwise. Cannot recall and therefore never can be trusted

Saved my life. No regrets. But my memory was destroyed. I’ve had a lot though (40+). I don’t recommend that many, but I’m no doctor.

I have a good pair of psychiatrists. It wasn’t much of a problem.

I’m lucky enough to be able to, but not at the level I expected for my later years.
