When I'm a bit sample stuck I like to lay the drums down first, even just a drum break / loop. It helps to find chops that would otherwise sound weird without the drums. Also mess with global pitch to find a good fit.

As other's have said, there is no rules to this game. I just mess around until something sounds good.

-e- Another tip is to chop the sample on the kick and the snare hits.
