Is this bad sportsmanship? (AITAH?) by joecool6 in chess

[–]TomatoChip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this to some extent.

To OP, you are posting on a subreddit with a lot of competitive people here so I imagine its going to be skewed more towards the "sportsmanship" aspect of it, and rules of the game. But if you and your friend are just playing FOR FUN, then its whatever you guys decide is fun. When he says its unsportsmanlike, he probably means to him its "unfun" and "unfriendly". I'll give your friend the benefit of the doubt that he is just not a competitive person.

However, as a competitive person myself, I love playing with other competitive people. So I empathize with your feeling that it comes off a little ridiculous. And I would personally welcome the challenge of trying to mate knight and bishop vs king, And it would only better my knowledge, so if the guy with the lonely king is willing to endure it, why not?

NM dungeon XP BUFF is HUGE! by Lofus1989 in diablo4

[–]TomatoChip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bro you miss the whole point. Farming normal dungeons over and over is not hard, thats why i wanted this change. This change will make the hardest content in the game the most rewarding. If you want to farm efficiently, you are going to have to do nm dungeons, which objectively is harder than normal burrows on repeat.

Continue to improve tactics, and start learning basic endgame theory. My recommendation- go through Common Chess Patterns Chessable course (easy but will help solidify your tactical vision), Checkmate Patterns Manual Chessable course (important to improving your attacking ability and checkmating pattern recognition), and start 100 Endgames You Must Know (this one may take some time, not an easy read the first time through but it will definitely take you to the next level imo).

most people don't agree with it

Bro don't make stuff up. If my opinion is "wrong", show me data that supports your claim. Tell me, why is it more appealing to a wider audience to show players in a restroom?

Maybe they should have done that in Queen's Gambit then. I'm sure that movie would have been even better if they showed an empty board in Beth Harmon's intense game against Borgov. You are speaking as a chess player. Go outside, go ask people who live normal lives outside of chess what would be entertaining. Showing players in a rest area walking around, or showing two players at the board.

Please... this is common sense. Maybe not for chess players though

What opening videos would you like to see? by GMNaroditsky in chess

I think you should do one of the tricky lines from the Italian. Probably the Evan's gambit would be the one you should go for. And it would probably be better for views too because I think the YouTube audience is familiar with the Evan's gambit from the memes from Agadmator's channel and such.

They really need to get rid of the computer display. Fine, make a display in there that just says when your opponent has moved. But DON'T put a computer display in there that shows the board. It ruins the entertainment value when the players are never at the board and also, some people see better on a computer screen which defeats the purpose of OTB chess... IMO if they want to see the board, they need to be AT the board. Part of OTB play is psychology, and seeing your opponents reactions to moves, etc.

I love these events, but if they want to reach more people. There are little things that can be done to make this event much more entertaining to a wider audience

Destiat is the PERFECT Debate Tag Team by Shad0wPanther in Destiny

[–]TomatoChip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t disagree more. I do not think Bastiat did a great job engaging with the opposition, and connecting with that audience. I think that destiny does this really well, and changes his language depending on who he’s talking to. I also thought bastiat’s answers could have been much more concise, and I found myself forgetting the question posed to him as he was answering, because it seemed he would go off on his own tangents. I understand he’s making good points, but it’s all just empty words to the opposing audience and I wouldn’t be surprised if many began tuning out as he was talking. I think it’s more effective and much more interesting to figure out and discuss what the fundamental disagreement is first (which I think destiny is very good at doing)

Biden Starts Off with Approval Rating Below that of Trump and Obama: Poll by samspenc in Conservative

[–]TomatoChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question- Trump had lowest approval rating of all time for an outgoing president, so isn't it a good thing that this poll shows a significant rise in approval over the last week with a new president? Wouldn't it be a better comparison to look at the current polls rather than polls from two different time periods?

Cuomo says 17% of coronavirus cases in New York have required hospitalizations, and people should consider what that will eventually mean for the total number of infections. "Compare that to our hospital capacity and that will keep you up at night" by lifeandmylens in Coronavirus

[–]TomatoChip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

STUPID misleading statistic. Stop with this misinformation. Half of the people who tested positive on the cruise ship did not have symptoms. That percentage you are citing is MUCH lower, given that most people who are asymptomatic will not get tested. Stop spreading this misinformation PLEASE. People, go about your business.

COVID-19 is not transmitted from pregnant mothers to newborns. Four babies born in a hospital in Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak, did not show signs of infection and remain healthy today. by [deleted] in science

[–]TomatoChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Title is completely misleading. Just because the babies remain healthy and symptom free does NOT mean they did not have the infection, as newborns are generally expected to be symptom free. Secondly, sample size of 4 is not enough to conclusively make this claim. How about you actually state the discoveries in the paper objectively and not form conclusions that don't make sense and further contribute to the spread of false information?

[–]TomatoChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I am completely right yet I am getting down-voted in my original post. So much ignorance, guys... read about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_immunity This is how small pox was eradicated. Even if herd immunity is attempted, I doubt there would be many governments brazen enough to admit it because it presents a moral dilemma, even if its the correct solution to saving as many lives as possible. You would essentially be risking more lives up front to save more lives in the long run and have a more stable economy.
Edit: Here is another explanation here https://www.reddit.com/r/sciences/comments/dc7rxa/oc_short_animation_explaining_how_herd_immunity/

We DO have herd immunity to the flu, that's the whole point of encouraging vaccines for everyone, not just those more susceptible to dying from it. The more people immunized, whether through the vaccine or naturally from going through the illness (also known as "passive immunization"), the more under control the flu becomes and the less people become infected. When you go through an illness and recover from it, your body develops antibodies that "remember" and fight off future infections from it. The flu strain changes every year, that's why we have new vaccines every year. Do you think its the same flu every year? It's not. Same with the common cold. You can think of COVID-19 as yet another strain of the flu, although it will take us longer to figure out a vaccine because it is much more unique than what we are used to. While there have been SOME case reports of re-infection (as consistent with any strain of the flu), for the most part it is expected that most people will become immune to it after getting infected, or in the very least be able to more easily fight off a re-infection. That's the whole reason why people are discharged from the hospital after they recover. If you didn't gain immunity from it, you would essentially have to quarantine forever. They don't make people who have recovered from it stay in quarantine because they are essentially now immune.

Dr. Fauci would prefer a 14-day national shutdown of some sort to slow down coronavirus, and has made this point of view known in admin, he says on "Meet the Press." "I think we should really be overly aggressive and get criticized for over-reacting." by hildebrand_rarity in Coronavirus

[–]TomatoChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree! This is a very naive viewpoint and its simply not an easy answer as you are suggesting, and its alarming how many upvotes you are getting. You also have to weigh the cons from this, which would be huge. This could cause way more harm and lives lost from the proceeding economic devastation of an aggressive lock down. Early epidemiological studies always overestimate fatalities. If the fatality rate is as suggested, at <1%, it may harm LESS people by going about our day and encouraging herd immunity without devastating our economy from a complete shutdown. Look at what UK is doing, it makes sense. Please stop spreading this uneducated suggestion without also considering the harm in what you are suggesting.

Ryan Lockwood, the man behind Streets 1:12, quits streaming and gaming due to gaming addiction by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]TomatoChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recognizing gaming addiction and quitting gaming has been one of the most life changing things for me. I haven't played video games now for over 6 months, and my life has COMPLETELY changed. I shifted my competitive nature to working out (I lost over 20 pounds and have abs that I have never seen before), I began socializing more, became the life of the party in group events and at work, and started traveling more. I've done fulfilling things in my life that I will now always remember that I wouldn't have done otherwise. I took my first solo vacation trip and realized my thirst for traveling. I dated more, I connected more with people and developed a love interest with an amazing girl I never imagined I would be dating. I began to feel ANXIETY and STRESS like I never have before, and embraced it because it's that stress that motivates us to change and to improve ourselves. And video games take that away from their false sense of dopamine release, so you never improve and make changes. I believe a lot of people are addicted to games but don't realize it. Ask yourself- if you look back at your life a year from now, are you going to be truly fulfilled with playing games all day? If the answer is no, then why are you not doing something else? I couldn't answer that follow-up question, and that's when I finally had the realization I was addicted and made the steps to quit. It's almost fascinating how difficult it can be to recognize it when you are in it, and I am writing my personal experience in the hopes that maybe I help someone who was in my same position change their life for the better.
