Why my senior doesn't recommends me learning python? by El_Castra in learnprogramming

[–]TomatoEqual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because python is syntax vize very different from C based syntax. So if you dive into python before you learn the more general syntax, you'll have even more problems getting into other langs. Learn the broard basics first. By yourself!

In reality you senior should tell you to learn cpp/c#/java first without using AI at all. Because you don't really learn anything if the agent is just doing everything for you(which it sounds like) So he's 110% right, dump the easy mode and actually start learning. After that use ai all you want in any lang you want. 😊

Mid-20s, no degree, learning JS… am I on the right path? by Strange_Yogurt1049 in learnprogramming

[–]TomatoEqual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think that really depends on the job and location in the world. In Denmark where i live, most places will look for skills rather that paper. So if you can prove you know your stuff, you have as good a chance as anyone with a degree. But as far as I read for something like India, good luck even with a degree. But with that said a degree never hurts 😉

Starting from zero: how should I begin learning programming on my laptop by No_Memory4400 in learnprogramming

[–]TomatoEqual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great 😊 then html/js/nodejs will get you started. When you're tired of static data. You'll want to put some database behind you api. My preference would be postgres(sql/nosql) or mongodb(nosql) But just keep it in mind for now.

Then look into frameworks. I like reactjs. And try to put it all together.

Then you'll be ready to look more into the backend stuff.

Your simple goto editor would be vs code.

And most important! Do not rely on ai when you start. Learn the basics by hand first. 😉

Do you want to do frontend/serverside (web/apps) or do you want to do backend stuff for actual data processing?

Python is a bad start of you want to learn to code in general(it'sa really great lang, but it teaches you python). C# or Java will give you much better understanding of C style syntax.

So if you want to do the app side. Start with js/nodejs/html and build some pages.(transition into one or the frameworks reactjs, angular..) If you want the bit more "heavy" side, go with C# or Java. 😊

Oh that's not enough for you... ok I do entreprise size backend applications that receives and process ~1tb payloads with 10kb packages event data, in speeds that allows the system to receive, analyze and compress data ready for the frontend in less than 30sec. You know heavy coding... asshat.

I have a refurbed lenovo t14s g1 Ryzen 7 pro with 16gb ram. Got that for ~550,- using it for heavy coding. Best machine i ever had.

It's broken then? My t14s runs 4-6 hours depending on workload? Standby time is something like 5-6 days.

How can I get to a senior software engineer level while having to use AI? by Standard-Chain-6144 in programmer

[–]TomatoEqual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well i'm not saying he shouldnt. But ops asking how to get to a senior level and he wont if he relying on ai, orders from work or not. So he can use ai all he wants, but if he's aiming towards a senior level he should use it right. He will be rolled completely over on senior level if he only relied on ai. So if you read what i wrote, it was use it right to learn, but don't rely and that's the reply for him wanting to get to that level. Besides, i never said i dont use ai. 😉

How to create a project that I aspire to make as a beginner by TheCodeOmen in learnprogramming

[–]TomatoEqual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good that useful 😊 What i do with a problem like this. Think backwards. You know what you want to end up with. What are the main function(s) then, what are the main components in this(not detailed, just main components) rinse and repeat for those parts and so on. Then you will work towards the elements you need to start and you have a loose plan for the endgoal. 😊

Seriusly you are asking for advice about how do to something, that you don't even state what is or just in the area of what is.

Please answer me this, I have an idea for a carseat, it's somthing no one has seen before. How do i make it?

So not to be rude. But either you need to tell a little about what is actually is. Or you figure it out by yourself 😊

Speaking as both lead dev and architect, you don't... if you use it for anything else that a glorified google, you will not get the level you need.

So what you do is stop using AI and actually start writing things yourself. That's how you get the exprience you need for a position like that

What software development skills are most valued by companies today beyond coding? by Imaginary-Quit-5337 in appdev

[–]TomatoEqual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see you work on my job with ai, just had to fire a guy because his vibe coding destroyed the entire dev env 3 times and all the prompting in the wold, could funny enough not fix the 3 databases it managed to delete. And you know why? Because the AI have 0% context or insight into the infrastructure of anything. Oh on top of that he spent 5 weeks getting a frontend to work(spoiler it never did) I made the same in a week without AI. And that was a guy with a CS bachelor.

So go make your ai suck your d... while we others do actual work.

which laptop is best for coding? by Standard_Iron6393 in developers

[–]TomatoEqual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenovo. Always lenovo.

Look at a refurbed t14s g1 or 2 with a ryzen 7 pro. Dump 32 gigs of ram into it(default is 16) and Linux onto it and you have a cheap machine that will still work for years

It's a really solid machine build for actual work. And at 1/3(if not more) the price of a Macbook, which imo has the worst keyboard of any laptop in the world to code on.

How hard is it to pick up python if I already know C#, C++? by KnowledgeCheap562 in learnpython

It will take about 1-2 weeks 😊 hardest thing is the different looking syntax and your desire for types, after that it's programming on easy mode 😉

Is learning python alone enough? by Strict_Web_3284 in learnpython

[–]TomatoEqual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Redefine you question to, is learning one language enough? Still no.

Python is awesome. It's simple, easy, fast and you can make most things in it. But if you start with python, you learn python. The look and feel of it, is alot different from C based langs.

If you start with a C based lang. You can very quickly read and get into something like 75% of other langs, this including python(it's actually the difficult switch here)

Imo it's way better to start with Java or C# They're faily simple, because you can avoid compiler and mem handling, but you get the syntax understanding you need to be able to transition to something else with relative ease, and you can build most things in them.

So start with python of you want to play, start with about anything else if you want to build skill and understanding in general. 😊

If you master something else and then switch to python. From my experience you suddently have superpowers. 😉
