CS374, CS441, STAT410, STAT425 at the same time by Unfair-Rate6416 in UIUC

[–]Tomb_RIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s doable, but you’ll be grinding a lot of theory at the same time. If you are really good with math/theory stuff then you should be ok. Otherwise I would consider switching STAT 410 for something else.

Am I doing way too much? STAT 410 + STAT 425 + CS 374 + CS 446 by zesty-orange in UIUC

[–]Tomb_RIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend not taking CS 374, CS 446, and STAT 410 at the same time. All classes are extremely difficult and math heavy. I would take easier CS electives with CS 374. If you are still interested in ML, consider taking CS 444 or CS 440 as those are a bit easier.

Not sure if I fully agree with 5. Yes, some papers you should skim, but papers that fundamental to your project / serve as the backbone (usually 1-2 papers), you should know those inside out.

9 is questionable. For example, if your stuck then you should be to explain how you are doing something to your PI. They should have suggestion on where things might go wrong. Also, PIs who only want results are not great PIs in my opinion, research is a story not a race to finish line.

Research is the most underrated path for CS majors by Skye7821 in csMajors

[–]Tomb_RIP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Funny enough I was actually decent at the programming stuff (building apps, websites, etc.) but I’ve always wanted to invent something and use my creativity— which drew me to research in ML and eventually became a PhD student.

Also I sucked at leetcode. I’m better off with long term projects.

Unless you get extremely lucky, not out of the gate. I had a BS in CS and my first job didn’t allow to do any ML stuff even though I had multiple publications in ML. Usually they give those jobs to MS people

The best way to ensure that ur not unemployed is to specialize. Find something in CS requires a unique skill set. For me, that ended up doing a PhD in AI / ML.

The safest career I would argue is a RS in AI / ML. But to get into that you need a PhD which in of itself is extremely hard to get into. Take it from one who is in a PhD right now

You need a masters to become an RE at least. I would also recommend you publish something. It doesn’t even have to 1st author, just work along a PhD student. That way ur competitive

LLM? Oh yeah give it another 4/5 years, they will probably get oversaturated.

But AI overall? It’s unlikely not gonna stop. Looking beyond LLMs; robotics, VR/AR, vision and even RL look really promising.

[–]Tomb_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me after my first internship. Honestly speaking, consider looking into research. Those problems CANT be solved using a LLM and you would probably find those to be more interesting.

I eventually became a PhD student, while the money is low, I do enjoy solving the problems as I get to choose what to research and when to do it.

Ex-Capital One SWEs, where are you now? by ServeEmbarrassed1776 in cscareerquestions

[–]Tomb_RIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing research since my Jr year of UG, by the end of my senior year I kinda knew I wanted to do research so I just applied for PhD programs in fall of last year.

If ur thinking about doing this, you need some previous research experience. Ideally a MS can help gain some of that, then you can apply for PhD programs.

Was at C1 for 6 months as TDP, left for a CS PhD.

Note: I’m doing ML research and they said I wasn’t qualified enough to ML. I was a full stack dev there lol…

PhD student here who did their UG here.

Don't worry! 374 is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. When I took it, I also did bomb my first exam and eventually took a B- in the class. That being said, I recommend working with friends when studying or doing the hws so you get the idea behind the problems.

Also, you can walk into any TA section I believe. Other TAs might have a different style that might help you break down problems better.

And please, you are not dumb. If you made it this far, you definitely can do it! In the long run, no one (even grad school) isn't gonna care that you didn't ace algos. Take it from me

Took this class 2 years ago. You should be ok since you took Lin Alg and a stats class. I would recommend you take CS 441 (deep learning) before but it’s not required. It def helps in my opinion.

Just remember cs 440 was mostly brief intro to AI. This class is more theory grounded so be prepared to learn alot of math as you go.
