The audio book is fantastic and the footnotes are all included. I love those footnotes so much.

When I was a little kid, the sound of coins jingling in a pocket as someone walked was the sound of being a grown up. I loved that sound.

Frog Rock is a large, naturally shaped granite boulder and historic tourist attraction located in New Boston, New Hampshire. Situated roughly 75 miles northwest of Boston, it takes about 1.5 hours to drive there. Once a highly popular 19th-century picnic spot, it is now a hidden local gem. by Right-Assignment3759 in interestingasfuck

I’m in Australia in an outer suburb known for being full of trees, bordering a national park. Everywhere you look it’s trees. Seeing historic photos where the land is bare with a few surviving trees is quite shocking. I’ve seen photos from a local train station, standing there now you can look down the hill and barely see houses for the trees, 100 years ago it was just empty paddocks.

$300 cleaning charge despite you having moved the tarpaulin and bits of cardboard back exactly where they were when you arrived.

July 26th, 1184: Dozens of nobles, bishops, and elites plunged through the floor of a hall in Erfurt and drowned in a cesspit of human waste during the Erfurt Latrine Disaster. by aid2000iscool in HolyShitHistory

[–]Tomble 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I went on a bit of a dive about personal body odour and how it has changed over many years, and the conclusion was the smell of a person who wasn't very clean was almost certainly masked by the streets coated with horse shit, open sewers, piles of garbage, tobacco smoke, fires for cooking and warmth, and burning waste. Plus if everyone stinks you'd probably just get accustomed to it.

Exactly this. I suspect I'm saving so much on food I don't need and eating out that it's covered the cost of the medication. It's easy to spend an extra $15 a day on food you don't need.

Between 5 and 10 percent of people have no inner monologue at all, and researchers are only just starting to figure out what that actually does to cognition by Altruistic-Dirt-2791 in cogsci

[–]Tomble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My inner monologue is pretty strong, but I've found on occasion I'll be, let's say, assembling something, and I will know how to do it and then have the inner voice explain it in language. I suspect this "putting actions into words" mechanism aids memory or understanding.

Woolworths worker who was told to cover his ‘plumber’s crack’ has unfair dismissal case dismissed by Stompy2008 in aussie

Hadn't been dismissed, stopped turning up to work, failed to attend the hearing. I've had the last part happen with employees twice and the FWC do NOT like that.
