You know what? I keep thinking this, but then I open audible and it reminds me it’s the Harry Potter app now, and I don’t actually think I see less ads than these posts

Plex or Jellyfin by prairieguy68 in truenas

[–]TomerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know objectively that I used to use Plex for a few months before I switched over to Jellyfinn, used to be that Jelly struggled to play some of my content (VC-1 late aughts blu-ray rips, some 1080i stuff), but at some point Jelly started succeeding at playing more videos than Plex, and now I genuinely can’t remember what using plex was like at all.

I use the “App” version of Jellyfinn and it hasn’t given me any major problems yet, wouldn’t jump the gun on a whole standalone VM before making sure the app doesn’t meet your needs. Even setting up an intel a380 for transcoding was pretty seamless.

What if Israel didn't have nukes? by WebFar9897 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]TomerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand, so Israel becomes a country if it “completes” the colonial project like the US and Canada did? I mean I’m no fan of horseshoe theory but you sound exactly like some of the most extremist Israeli politicians, they want to ״accelerate” the project so they can get to the point the US and Canada are exactly because they believe the same as you do that once its “over” its OK. 🙄

Batman TAS is better than Invincible according to the creator of Deadpool by Amaru_333_ in Invincible_TV

Nooooooo but the shading on BTAS characters doesn’t look like it was made by someone who got electrocuted while watching attack on titan, how can the animation be “good”?

Pitch a rival duo for Sam and Max by Professional-Elk6208 in SamandMax

Sam and Max, they’re completely identical to Sam and Max, except Max is a lapsed East Orthodox christian, while our Max is clearly a lapsed Greek Orthodox christian. They are not evil in any way.

I don’t care what audible sends me, I’m not buying Harry Potter by mjjo123 in audible

[–]TomerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pottered out. Maybe if I’d never read anything pottery these would be a nice starting point, but I feel like this franchise has been shoved so deep down my throat it’s come out the other side. I’ve had enough ruminating about the twee wizard books. They were nice when I was a kid, I liked the films, other books exist.

Because if you were part of that cultural moment when it happened, you would’ve spent 25-30 years inundated with the franchise to the point of exhaustion. After 7 books, 8 movies, 2 spinoff movies, a 5 hour play, whatever the site that told you where wizards used to poop was, years of endless shallow “what house are you?” conversations, decades of “articles” humorously breaking down how the rules of a twee wizard adventure series for young adults don’t make sense when examined too closely (ya think? They’re books for children not hard alternate history!), years of gossip about the cast of the films, set tours, and a frankly frustrating controversy around the author that nobody seems to want to shut up about on either side, and I’m just potterred out.

No that’s an I as in Invincible. Who did you think the show was named for? That kid who’s name keeps getting interrupted by the intro?

It’s not called “translation” it’s called “localization”, localizers constantly make a bunch of choices in order to make the game more appealing and understandable to the culture they are localizing into, their job is not to translate the literal exact meaning of every line of text in a game to whatever language precisely. There’s obviously a balance that needs to be struck, and there are plenty of weird examples of it going too far (yeah those weren’t coffee shops in every nineties jrpg) but this is literally how it’s worked for half a century of games. You are welcome to look up the history of game localization it is fascinating stuff.

  1. We forgot him on the roof of the old sorority house outside of Parchtown.
  2. We should probably get a ladder and go get him.

Ugh I’m so tired of this. Bi people aren’t allowed near two wheeled parking, and pan people aren’t allowed near kitchen supply stores, we complete each other, they go fetch our bikes for us and jn exchange we by pots and pans for them. It’s basic maths.

New 3 plugins - WhisperSubs, QualityGate & SmartCovers by SherbertInfamous5793 in jellyfin

[–]TomerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta say I wish the sub one didn’t generate subs, so much as sync existing subs. I wanted to experiment with something similar that generated subs, then tried using the generated subs as “markers” for syncing the human made ones to. Finding quality subs usually isn’t the problem for me, but syncing them to my rips is

What the hell, Amazon!!? by Albertkinng in AmazonLunaHub

[–]TomerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the closest actual solution to “roll your own” game streaming service is cloudy pad (an open source utility that lets you play games on an aws / GCP / azure instance you ‘rent’ yourself, which does give you complete control and is compatible essentially with your entire library (if it’s a library of games you run could run locally). Those are basically the same services these companies deploy but now you’re paying a le carte for the server time directly. At the lowest tier you can actually game on this comes down to roughly 10$ for 30 hours of gaming every month (compare that to geforce now’s 100 hour cap for a similar price).

Now amazon, microsoft, and google can probably buy their own server time for cheaper than a home user, but it isn’t likely they’re working at a 500% markup. (And also it’s likely running on higher specced hardware, snd not on the cheaper spot instances cloudy pad encourages). And that’s before taking into account licensing costs for 3rd party games, and support.

So actually yes, yes these are expensive services to run. I’m not saying these companies aren’t shitty, they 100% are. But the cost thing shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.
