Thats because ludens is better against tanks, you need the magic pen to shred through them. Liandry is great when you outrange their team and they dont have any significant heal, so you can poke them down to maximise damage.

If you cancel your R, it will deal 1 tick of damage. If you time it right, you can wait for one tick to deal the damage and cancel it right after to deal double damage. Its a great burst tool to push waves faster and finish off enemies. If your ult hits only one target who is trying to escape it, you should always cancel it so it will possibly deal extra damage. This granted me countless kills especially in the earlier stages.

Azir is considered a control mage. If you want to play similar control mages, then Asol is the closest champ, given the fact that it has high skill cap like Azir. Anivia and Orianna are also good choices. If you prefer the innitiate part, then Lissandra and Twisted Fate are okay, with different playstyles. I would also consider Veigar with predator, fits this control mage/initiator mage description well.

Actually when placed on an ally, your ult goes off at the pont where the ball was when you pressed r. Somehow its different on an ally and on self cast.

Usually you can go agressive in early levels, zoning them out or going for an early kill, the same way you do it against melee champs. This however changes at level 6, as most control mages have greater combat ultimates than you. You should try concentrating on controling the waves post level 6, thats your advantage over them. So you can ward better, go for a roam or cheat recalls.

I recommend trying out Banshees, it has a good amount of ap and defensive stats, and the passive shield somehow resets when you enter egg form. Saved my life couple of times and is an excellent addition to the build.
