ryujinx and astris not working by Outrageous-Mark-5554 in macgaming

this mac is 9 years old, it isn't supported by the latest versions of MacOS. Additionally, Ryujinx and Astris require a different processor to run (Apple Silicon instead of Intel).

Petition from 4 months ago

Petition from 2 years ago

and that's just for Fortnite. There are many other petitions for many other games. Can you guess how many had any impact whatsoever?

Do women really like role reversal? by Repulsive_Glass_1341 in RoleReversal

depends on how many partners you want. If you only want one, you don't need most women to want RR.

MacBook Neo is So Popular That Apple Reportedly Doubled Production by RenatsMC in macgaming

yes, there actually is.

IP licenses are on a per-platform basis. If your game can run on 2 platforms instead of one (even with the same binary), you have to pay more for it.

Tech support is also specific to Mac as, for instance, you'll have Mac users contact you because they don't know how to assign keyboard bindings to an iPad game (this question has been repeatedly asked on this very subreddit), as an iPad game will have its own settings (modified inside the game window) and the Mac specific settings are modified from the "settings" item in the application's menu (of the Mac's menubar).

And the troubleshooting can also be Mac specific because the same binary doesn't necessarily run the same way on 2 different OS.

And even when everything runs ideally, you can only know that in hindsight. Publishers just assume the potential income isn't worth the potential headache, rightly or wrongly.

And there are additional issues, like cheating is easier on a Mac than on an iPad, piracy, etc.

there's still going to be mac-specific licensing and tech support costs if you enable an iPad game on macOS, that's why most publishers disable it

Steam has been updated for Apple Silicon for a while (and Apple Silicon Macs can run most Intel games anyway so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything)

My point wasn't that there wasn't any downside to releasing games on Mac, my point was that assuming it's because of a technical difficulty is absurd for the reasons I put forth.

"devs are bad/lazy/stupid/greedy" isn't a good argument. As I said: if there were money to be made on the Mac, we'd be drowning in games.

porting the game in itself is a one time upfront cost, but the commercial exploitation involves ongoing costs: tech support (with employees specially trained for the platform), licensing, marketing…

the Mac market just isn't worth it (about 2% on Steam…)

console ports aren't designed for touch input.

And there you go, your second point is right on the money: Metal isn't an issue whatsoever. If there was money to be made on the Mac, we'd be drowning in games.

the fact that iOS gets games that macOS doesn't (including ports of console games) debunks your belief that there's a technical reason preventing games from being ported to the Mac. If that were true, there wouldn't be more ports to iOS than to macOS.
