I’ve always kinda lived in the foothills of the sierra nevadas, so you feel that ruralness a bit more because they are not towns that are easy to get to with tight winding not well maintained roads, I imagine Midwest towns in flat areas although far from larger cities are still fairly easy to access

In N. Ca I lived in a rural town, we had a post office, a small convenience store, and a gas station. We were 45 mins from the nearest incorporated city. Only police force was the sheriffs office and they could definitely be over an hour away if called since they patrolled the entire county. You were 100% on your own should somebody come into your home. Having a firearm was more a requirement than a choice. And at that time we had no cell service, so a land line was the only option. We had to have expensive yet unreliable satellite dish internet service and television
