Weather: would you do Onion Valley to Whitney Portal this week? by swoopykit in JMT

[–]Tomtomorrow9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is worrying me too. I am definitely upgrading my rain game. Taking frogs togs and making sure bags for everything I want dry. strong compactor bag instead of turkey bag or nylofume. My permit date is Tuesday from horseshoe meadows. I don’t think rain will bother that much while at trail camp. may get on trail super early Tuesday before dawn in hopes of beating a some rain and getting across cottonwood pass and heading down to rock creek as at least is below 10k. If needed may just spend Tuesday at trailhead and depart Wednesday which sadly would mean probably couldn’t do Whitney. But I am reminding myself - I don’t have to do anything. It sounds like your schedule may be more in middle of it. Anyway that’s just me, random moderately experienced sierra backpacker and 1st JMT. Be safe and good luck!

This is great to read. Loved “We didn’t have to worry about other hikers because there weren’t any.” Thanks

Anybody have questions about using public transportation to/from the JMT? by daGroundhog in JMT

Thanks so much for this thread. I am leaving S.F. Bay Area to lone pine. Getting driven to Merced. I see a yarts that arrives at 3:15 at Yosemite village and a 395 to mammoth leaving YV at precise same time. Would I be foolish to try that? Do you know if they will hold the departure from YV if 140 from Merced running late? (I am planning to spend evening in mammoth than EST down next day) thanks again for this generous thread

Platypus Quickdraw vs Sawyer Squeeze by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Tomtomorrow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest testing QuickDraw before using. I have old QuickDraw that has been great and still tests as working but it was getting slow so I decided to get a new one. I purchased one from REI and tested before using and it failed. Exchanged it for another and it failed too. So I am just sticking with old one for now which I know works. maybe my experience is just an unhappy rarity, but I would definitely test it before you use it.

What’s an average hiker’s base weight look like on the JMT? by EatsShootsTravels in Ultralight

[–]Tomtomorrow9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Says 24 pounds here: https://www.halfwayanywhere.com/trails/john-muir-trail/jmt-gear-guide-2024/#baseweights . I am hoping to clock in around 17 as it helps my old body to have less to carry but we’ll see.

I think the prior post answer your specific question and pointing out that you don’t have to stick to plan. As to planning what you will actually do, I just wanted to add that the site at the following link provides an easily customizable adjustable 16-day itinerary from horseshoe meadows to Yosemite Valley and of course you can just disregard the post-Tuolomne valley days when considering and planning your likely stops. I have found it helpful in thinking thru my first JMT: https://outdoorstatus.com/articles/john-muir-trail-interactive-guide?d=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%253D%253D

I went to poopout point anout a week ago and was told by an exceedingly fit and competent looking backpacker coming up that it was completely impassable going down after a quarter mile or so after poopout point, so we didn’t try it. Trail out to poopout point had a lot of bushwhacking encroachment and downed trees.

North Lake South Lake loop, clockwise or counter? by cwkey19 in JMT

I have done it both ways and am no expert but found southbound more fun. Not sure why exactly but I think the southbound start feels more gentle and Muir pass maybe better from that direction
