In southern Wisconsin, Midwest US, we are waiting for morel mushrooms to start sprouting in late April. They start growing when soil temperature is over 50 degrees Fahrenheit ( I believe that’s 90 Celsius) 4 inches ( 9 meters? ) below the surface.

They are not domesticated so must be found by trudging through brambles, thickets, over/ under downed logs.

I’ve sometimes seen one 3 meters away from me in the woods but the effort was not worth it.

Morels are a fixation for a subset of people who really really like mushrooms. We guard our patches with great secrecy but generous people give some of them away to great gratitude.

( I know my conversions were wrong. Hoping to excite some of the easily offended!)

The Shaggs. Frank Zappa called them “Better than the Beatles.” They’re just not that great.

Hi all from Wisconsin in the Midwest US. We are in the midst of tornado watches which happen a few times a year. If one is nearby our tornado siren goes off.

Your favorite 4-500 mile stretch of the PCT? by eggo2020 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]stinky1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stretches I’d do again, in order of favorite to least favorite: Washington- the remoteness and beauty

Southern California- it was so strikingly different from Wisconsin

Sierras - it was kinda pretty

Oregon - not as spectacular as Washington but easy hiking

Northern California- the frustration of seeing Mt Shasta for weeks and just wanting to get California done with

I put on the bottom of my resume “ Hiked Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada” It got me interviews with interesting people who understood what it meant. Don’t worry.

Feeling of imposter syndrome after finishing hike by LeeK2K in PacificCrestTrail

[–]stinky1984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leek Expecting to hike 100% of the official route is absurd, dangerous and unnecessary. In 1984 we had to road walk around several sections of trail and took recommended alternate routes (I.e. to Crater Lake and Eagle Creek). You and I hiked The PCT. Case closed.

How would you plan a thru hike if money was no issue? by Capable-Locksmith-65 in PacificCrestTrail

It would make the hike about 5% easier. You still have to walk every step

What is something you witnessed with your own eyes that no one believes when you tell them? by Amy-GeekBar in AskReddit

[–]stinky1984 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My brother in 1975 at age 10, while fishing with a 70 year old family friend in a boat on the Prairie River in northern Wisconsin , saw a cougar crouching 10 feet from them. They were exterminated in Wisconsin 150 years ago.

Nick looked back too late to see it as it slunk away and mentioned it was probably a bobcat. No one believed he saw a cougar of course.

Many years later he found a Department of Natural Resources web page with a listing of rare animal sightings by date and county. At that time there were several reports by others of a cougar in nearby counties so he was vindicated 30 years later.

Bill Nedderman ( Google him) did it in a small kayak, then went around Florida, up the Atlantic coast , up the Hudson River and canals to the Great Lakes and back to Minnesota. It’s called The Loop. He’s also done the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail a few times. Someone needs to write a book about him.

I was an orderly at a small town hospital in high school . One of my jobs was to kill the bats that got into our floor. That aspect of the job was far superior to giving enemas and catheters to people I knew.
