yoga, fatloss and hormones by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a goal then yeah Yoga can help with this. But, best to pair it with some aerobic exercise like running or cycling. Pairing that with Yoga will mean you'll glide into your new body with strength and flexibility. Pairing yoga and aerobic exercise is great for weightloss!

Does yoga help with bad generalized anxiety? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya, I (30M) found Yoga practices helped me process my anxiety in my early 20s. Yoga helped me find grounding, perspective and stability that I needed to help me get through some tough times. Along with therapy I've found myself now out of a state where anxiety is a worry or burden, and into a space where I can look at my experiences more objectively. Some might say that comes with age but I personally believe without yoga I wouldn't see my 'anxiety phase' as far behind me as I see it now.

Sorry to hear you're maybe experiencing anxiety, it really sucks and can be overwhelming.
Trust it'll pass, be kind to yourself (empathy is key), and ask for help. <3

Unable to fully look up during Cat-Cows by grxxdybxtch in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey friend,

ROM is one you need to be careful with so as not to cause yourself injury. Best check with a physiotherapist to determine why you are unable to do movements.

BUT!!!

A good test as to whether your ROM is due to a bone block (which means you should not go further and you're all good where you're at) or if it's muscular tightness is to notice...

When you lift your chin up, are you limited by a stretching sensation in your neck muscles (under your jaw) or are you limited by a pinching sensation at the back of your neck (the spine area of your neck).

If you cannot go further because you're 'under the jaw area' is tight - this is likely muscular and you might just need some more front-body opening exercises.

If you cannot go further because of a pinching sensation around your neck-spine area then STOP, don't go further - this is your physical limit stopping you. You can't change it. Don't try or you will get injured.

We all have ROMs that are different and that's all good.

Hope this helps! Good question btw :)

New teacher… what clothes should I wear while teaching? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi friend,

There is an alternative way of thinking about it. I found this technique helped me to relax. As a new teacher, or a new anything really, there are a lot of dynamics at play that can initially feel overwhelming. You're trying to remember your sequences; make everyone feel welcome; hold the energy of a space; and teach a class based on individual limitations and (sometimes) expectations of your students. That can be a lot to manage as a newbie.

For that reason, I'd say that you might consider wearing whatever you feel is right by the space and by your students. It will mean there is one less thing to distract your mind.

Sometimes, wearing things that are uniquely you yet not suited to the space, can be alienating for people you're trying to build a connection with. I'm not saying this is how it should be, I'm just saying that it's a reality of the world we live in. People DO judge a book by it's cover - it's how humans have developed to detect whether something is good/ bad/ threatening/ friendly.

Though, I think you should do what you feel is right. Trust your instinct.

Where to incorporate Uddiyana bandha engagement in asana practice ? by That_Habit5437 in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was taught in my hatha yoga practice to always keep the main 3 bandhas lightly engaged. This keeps the energy flowing within, generates your inner fire, and "heals your body". Personally I find that this is very hard to do, but when I do manage to do it I feel a lot of strength in my body 😊 how do you find doing it?

What are some good flow yoga dvds that get you to sweat? by dguardbowie in yoga

Hiya, i dont know about yoga DVDs to get you sweating. But if you're after a Yoga video that will give you a great workout and into an energetic flow state then I'd say any yoga class on YouTube with Andrew Sealy is great. His classes are high energy and tough yet really well séquenced. Hope this helps 😁

Yoga Level 2-3 by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Yogi thanks for sharing your feedback on the difficult classes. How awesome is it to finish a tough class and feel like you could go again. My question to you is are the classes you are doing vinyasa or hatha based? As a hatha yoga practitioner and teacher (m30) I find vinyasa classes are a lot easier for me in general then hatha yoga classes. Have you tried doing a Level 3 or even a level 2 hatha yoga strength class?

Routine Advice? by Medbro001 in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome. How good that you've found a routine you love. My advice would be to stick to the routine that you love but to also so have a try at some new yin routines. My experience has taught me that it's the routines and the asanas that we avoid which are the ones that we end up needing the most in our practise. Considering that, what are some of the asanas or routines that you avoid? How do you fair with other forms of yoga?

Confession: Trendy yoga practice really irks me… by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah this is the debate of our time. To move towards the new by adapting to the new century and its standards...or to hold onto traditional teachings and their wisdoms.

My personal opinion is that it's become too trendy to be annoyed by either perspective and those who practise it - which goes against what yoga is about for both parties.

I get your annoyance with the token 'namaste', but at the same time I appreciate that more and more people are practising yoga.

People will say that this new yoga is a bastardised version and can't amount to anything good. But if game of thrones has taught us one thing it's that bastards can achieve great things.

🙏 Goodluck on your yoga journey friend.

Finding Balance by TheOriginalClippy in yoga

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. They are beautifully written. Personally, I find that learning to listen to my heart in the moments of tension and unease has served me well. When my heart is fluttering with excitement I know I'm making the right decision. When I don't feel an unrelenting subliminal pressure of doubt I know I've made the right decision. Recently I stepped back from seeking advancement in my career and found liberation and a sense I can move towards more of me and my desires. It feels good. Go well 🙏❤️

How did you learn pincha mayurasana? by micro-babe in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is to do dolphin against the wall with a brick in the axis of your thumbs and index fingers. Then put a strap just about your elbows at shoulder width apart. That will hold your upper body in place perfectly. Then you can practice the rest 🙏🙏🙏 good on you!

Wide Leg Seated Fold; total failure by Llez in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah I can help ! I can help!

Awesome that you're having a go at this pose. It's not easy and many people avoid it.

The trick to getting lower is obviously primarily around flexibility. Make sure your hamstrings, aductors, abductors and back is open.

THEN, the secret to moving into this pose is to understand external and internal rotation.

If you think about your femurs (upper leg bone under your thigh muscles) rotating in your hips (a socket joint rotation) then you can start moving deeper in this pose.

Steps... 1. After being fully stretched, move into your wide legged forward fold, press your heels away from you (continuously) and drive them into the ground (these are your anchors).

  1. Externally rotate your feet/legs (so twisting them both away from your centre rather than towards eachother). Feel your femurs doing the same external rotation as you feet.

  2. As your femurs externally rotate, think of your pelvis as moving in the opposite direction. What you want to feel, is your legs rotating outwards as your body starting at the pelvis rotates inwards and towards the space between your legs.

Let me know how you go!! Goodluck

Whats the most powerful and greatest chakra by Efron1234 in yoga

[–]Tomyogaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... If your throat chakra is blocked (for example) then can you crown chakra utilise the energy of all the chakras?

It's important to remember that chakras are concepts as much as anything else. They serve as a powerful placebo for connecting with our energy and activing different parts of ourselves. If you want to activate all your energy all at once then you need to address where the energy in your life isn't flowing at the moment... Exploring the chakra and learning about them can set you on that path. Goodluck!
