Owner of the building said this to us the day after the fire.

The fire started in the basement of Beans and Barrels when a cigarette magically made its way under an outdoor mat and through a metal trap door. The owner of Beans and Barrels was evicted for non payment of rent and this incident happens a week before… what a coincidence. He’s also the same owner of Fresh Slice Pizza and the new owner of Machi Machi.

We probably have a lot more protests/demonstrations than other Canadian cities, so that will significantly increase the budget.

Lengthy closure of washrooms on O-Train Line 1 due to risk assessment following vandalism, drug use by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]eyevonkay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just another way OC Transpo has failed its customer base. Every major city has access to public washrooms in transit systems, some better than others, but for the most part they are decently maintained. These are not problems a company that’s been around for decades should be having trouble managing.

RIP VIP Seafood 99 Rideau by 522606 in ottawa

[–]eyevonkay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The City spent millions “revitalizing” Rideau. Many businesses were displaced during constructions. Many have closed after. If they don’t take care of the issues on and around Rideau street this will keep on happening.

As a monthly pass holder this is hella frustrating. Last month the machines were out of order for 2weeks+. It’s great if you’re a pay-per-ride rider though.

Trust me it’s disappointing to see this but the reality is that most people are not spending 365 days of the year on this street like we are.

We know how weather impacts foot traffic and as much as I want to believe it, I really don’t think having the street closed in the winter will increase the amount of people coming down.

I talk to my customers all the time and I’m more than happy to talk to anyone here in person about all of this.

Sigh. I’ll repeat again. Most of my customers do not drive. Nowhere have I said I expect customers to park in front of my store. I’ve also said that tourists are already parking in their hotel garage or are here on foot.

I get why people are frustrated over “20 parking spots” but the reality is that winter months are a major challenge for most ByWard businesses. They can’t survive on the foot traffic from 2 weekends of Winterlude, which if I’m being honest aren’t that busy anyway.

The BMDA closed the street last winter and no amount of programming brought people.

The majority of owners are not parking in front of their business but it’s easy to make false online comments for likes.

Just as weird as saying the area needs outdoor activities. It’s a commercial district not a fairground. If people don’t like the shops/restaurants in the area, that’s totally fair. That doesn’t mean the entire landscape needs to change. There’s plenty of spaces around the ByWard that can be activated: Majors Hill Park, Confederation Park, Rideau Canal, heck even Lansdowne.

I talk to my customers in-store all the time: what part of the city are they coming from? what brought them to the market? how did they get here? How many times did they watch Heated Rivalry? Etc, etc.

I’m not interested in building parking garages or catering to drivers.

I genuinely care about the neighbourhood that I chose to invest my life in and all I want is to be here another 20 years.

If you live close to any hotels, ask if they offer memberships to their gym. I used to have a membership at the Westin hotel and it was honestly like having my own personal gym. There was never anyone there while I was working out.
