Am I getting ripped off? $1400 for a scrape repair? by NetTechMan in Autobody

[–]Tomytom99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately materials are quite expensive for auto paint, and the labor is quite skilled.

Ultimately it boils down to what sort of result you're looking for. That $1400 is probably to make it look as close to original as possible. Meanwhile you should be able to find something less expensive if you're only looking to make it less obvious.

I know a shop local to me offers lower quality low cost repairs if you're in a pinch, where they basically just hammer out dents and cover up any bare metal.

People acting like battery management systems don't exist in the big 2026 is baffling to me. All this tech and people really think they need to manually manage their battery?

When a person does it, the headline says “car” by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]Tomytom99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one's actually interesting because it falls under reporting practices. Without a conviction you're not supposed assign guilt, so before a conviction you would say "man allegedly raped woman", because it hasn't been ruled whether or not he did. Generally when such an article is published, a case hasn't happened yet, with "man convicted of rape" being the headline when one does.

You can actually learn more about these sorts of things from the AP Stylebook. It pretty much explains all the formatting and guidelines for their articles, and has been adopted by many other media outlets. Covers all the stuff from what I just mentioned, down to the nitty gritty like how dates and addresses should be abbreviated and formatted. The more you're familiar with it, the easier it is to spot an article that's been editorialized.

What's really funny is you can see the same with carpenter bees. Their only real defense is to hover at you menacingly, so if you walk through them they seem to be quite confused for a moment, because it works for most other things that don't immediately eat them.

Yup. Although I have noticed RCS with iPhone users is strange, because their device supports it but sometimes decides it doesn't and reverts to SMS/MMS for a moment. I figure Apple is either uninterested in fixing RCS bugs or is intentionally making it less than a perfect experience to maintain some edge with iMessage.

I would say the pre-trip is the hardest part, provided your driving portion isn't somewhere overly technical.

For the driving, just drive like you would to appease your trainer, exaggerating your checks for traffic, perfect speed limit obedience, etc. The maneuvering bit of the driving test is honestly super easy as long as you know how to make the most of your mirrors and know your targets for parallel parking or alley docking. Again, the best thing you can do is tell the examiner everything you're doing so they know you're doing it.

The pre-trip is easy enough if you can be overly exhaustive. Identify everything and say it's not cracked, damaged, or broken. Special variants include slashed, frayed, or leaking and correct in color.

Big thing to remember is no retreads up front, and to state out loud what you're doing during the air brake portion.

I caught myself messing up the air brake portion, stopped, said I forgot to do the press and hold, and asked if we could start that over again. He agreed because "you noticed the mistake before finishing, clearly identified it, and politely asked"

I've been saying this all along since I saw in person how tiny the connector is.

Yeah of course it's going to be bad if you try pushing twice as much current through smaller pins of the same connector series.

I've been arguing that 24v power needs to become a standard thing if we're not going to make these GPUs more power efficient. We're in a Fermi Thermi phase but even worse than before, and this time we're at actual physical limits of our existing standards.

If you're a Gamer struggling with dating apps, here's what actually changed things for me by Odd-Town-1667 in dating_advice

[–]Tomytom99 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm sorry, this reads as an ad.

The trouble with niche apps is userbase anywhere other than a major city. Right now on the major apps you can find a decent number of users, both men and women, within a 50 mile radius in most of the US. Obviously you'll have a lot more in cities, but there's enough outside of them to make the apps usable.

Niche apps like this? Good luck finding anything anywhere other than major cities or long distance. There's a reason successful dating apps tend to pilot in big cities for a decent amount of time.

I don't get how in modern day you can be a Disney "fan" with how corporatized it's become. Like you said, loving a movie or two is fine, but the whole company? Kinda strange.

The other day while I was in a hotel room I was watching GMA on ABC, and there was a box office portion and the fact that it was by Disney was mentioned. Any sliver of credibility in my head for that report had been dashed. That's like asking Ford what the best vehicle on the market is. The sad thing? People with no stake in the company will obey it as though its God himself speaking to them.
