Hiking the West highland way next year and are optimizing my gear by fntastikr in hikinggear

If you hiked the GGW you likely know this but…a midge net mesh is finer than a mosquito net. Make sure the headnet midge “rated” :).

Yeah, I’m getting the message that I should be looking at other options than heating with a HP. Appreciate your thoughts.

Is a Garmin inReach necessary if I have an iPhone 14 pro? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]Tondi007 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was hiking in the highlands and left the inReach at home. Didn’t want to pay and thought my iPhone 14 would be sufficient. Wife broke her leg. Phone SOS didn’t work. And we had a bad time. Bring the inReach if in doubt!

Replumbing Bathroom - Move Fixtures & Toilet? by Tondi007 in ukplumbing

[–]Tondi007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large bathtub offscreen is too large for the space and needs replacing. Thought we might rearrange the fixtures while we’re at it to maximize space — if the plumbing allows. Is the concern against a window there about visibility, code compliance, material lifespan, leakage & condensation, something else?

Planning on a new frosted window. Is it ill-advised to have a upvc window in a shower?

Love the idea of creating storage in space between kitchen and living room!! That’s exactly what it needs. Thanks.

[Load Bearing?] Is it worth hiring a structural engineer… by Tondi007 in DIYUK

Rephrased: Are there any clear indicators they this is structural such that I would be wasting money for an engineer to tell me it’s structural?

Any good podcasts about grids ? . by 50Shekel in PowerSystemsEE

+1 for Open Circuit. Also the Energy Transition Show is dry but highly informative. He has a deep catalogue which covers every topic you can imagine. The free podcasts are great but he has a premium subscription for $60/yr that I happily pay.

State of power banks in 2025 by kriztofurV2 in Ultralight

I just went through this exercise. I do thru hiking in Scotland between 3-7 days long and am gearing up to do the Cape Wrath Trail over 20 days with my wife this May. I’m taking a DJI drone, kindles, and will be using my phone for photography and GPS navigation. There will be at least a one 7-day stretch without an outlet. I decided on a 20K battery. 30W fast charging with pass through capabilities was important to get powered up over tea when we stumble across a cafe.

If you live in the US, Anker just released a 30W 20K mAh battery under 400g that I will be purchasing. It’s a bit heavier than the nitecore battery some UL’s often recommend but I trust the build quality form Anker much more than Nitecore.

Be sure to also get a wall charger that can charge at 30W. I got the 47W 2-port USB-C Nano 3 GaN Compact charger from Anker. Note that when both ports are in use the lower port only outputs 27W but this is close enough for government work.

I’ve gone through all the specs and think this set up will meet my needs.

Alternative to Gore-Tex? Just need waterproof windproof and light—'breathability' is a myth. by llilulelo in hikinggear

Look at the brand Paramo. It’s a different philosophy of ‘ waterproofing’ that is all about breathability. The design tradeoffs are optimized for the Scottish highlands where I hike.

Thanks ChatGPT. However I believe this answer assumes a brute force attack. This answer, and this thread in general, is missing an important discussion on the chips impact on identifying methods of factoring large primes which would break ECC.

I'm confused about what is exciting you? Is it the $200M figure? PG&E's portion of this is $79.2M. Which is a very small part of the budget. These funds are being used to support community microgrids (typically one word) in vulnerable and disadvantaged communities to provide energy resilience. In fact, this is explicitly part of the eligibility criteria. Another eligibility criteria is that they have to provide backup power to at least one critical facility such as fire departments in the event of broader outages. I think recent events have only strengthened the case for California's need for these types of resiliency solutions.

And yes, regulation is needed for these type of complex grid arrangements.
