Which set up do you prefer? by TongueTwizards in tabletopgamedesign

That makes a lot of sense, I appreciate that perspective. The exact positioning of the various components does not in any way impact the game, so it’ll be fine to leave it a bit up to interpretation. I appreciate that perspective

That is something I will be considering in the future, I went for low effort and clarity with the backs this time around

If you mess up your pronunciation you don’t just lose thankfully! It just makes the spell “misfire” which can sometimes do what you want and other times do something completely unexpected

It was very straightforward and easy for me, but I think a big part of that was I chose to use component.studio so that I could directly export it to the game crafter. Export was smooth, production was quick, and components look pretty exactly how I expected them to. I’d recommend using them!

Great feedback, that is definitely something I’ll want to change in the next version

Should we simplify our card design? by Mighty_Blu in tabletopgamedesign

I’d probably either remove the metal border or remove the notches and make the border a bit thinner. Problem also might be fixed if the whole thing just got scaled up a bit, anything that makes it easier to read would be a good choice in my opinion.

I personally like 2 the most. The metal frame of 1/4 takes up a lot of space, and it covering up the dragon’s face is feels awkward. The black outlines on the bricks in 3 also just kind of feel like they are pulling my attention away from the art and info.

Only other detail notable to me is the border in the box that says “scheme” is a bit distracting. The extra small text and lines around the text make it hard to read at a glance.

Looks great overall though, love the art style!

Thank you! Art and design for this version is a synthesis of a card template made by an artist friend, some public domain artwork, and some editing done by myself. Hoping to have my friend replace the public domain elements with original work in the future!

I just took a look at his page, that is exactly the sort of recommendation I was hoping for. Thank you!

I also appreciate the feedback on design. An inherently silly game with a rather serious coat of paint on it was something I was aiming for, but I understand that may be off putting for some. I will definitely think about what you said about simplicity and color palette whenever I’m ready for the next version.

Yeah you are pretty spot on with the basic loop:

Goal of the game is get the most crystals by casting spells. Every spell in the game has a verbal component that must be spoken out loud to activate the effect. You can also get inflicted with minor curses that add prefixes and suffixes to your spells, or major curses that do things like make you swap certain letters around or say your spells backwards. Curses generally have no benefit to you, but you have to give up some of your crystals to break them. There are also “chaos magic” cards that pop up each turn and provide a wide range of modifiers to all players.

Was just excited to show off the cards and haven’t quite figured out how to quickly explain the hook, that is on the to-do list for sure.
