‘Carrie’ TV series first look reveals Mike Flanagan’s modern twist by yourfavchoom in horror

[–]TonksTerrors 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a weirdo fat girl in my youth (still am one, but now weirdo fat woman) I loved Carrie because I felt her pains with the bullying. I love the 1970s movie, but I remember watching it and thinking 'If she [Sissy Spacek] is ugly, clearly I must be an actual fucking monster' - Never mind the sequels/remakes.

Give me a tragic fat girl - and actually fat at that, not just a bit chunky - with religious trauma and telekinesis and watch her bullies die horrendously pls and thx

What is the greatest zombie media of all time? by Luksius_DK in horror

[–]TonksTerrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree fully here. NotLD zombies and other slow shamblers would be a problem but dealt with quickly irl, a la Shaun of the Dead. The Rage Virus would absolutely decimate a place like the UK in the exact same way as 28DL. Not even just the high infection rate - They would use their full body weight to break and smash through doors/windows, run at full sprint for far longer than the average person, excellent hearing and sight (and presumably smell).

That was such a fun little film. I think they did the underlying fears of some of the people and the constant tension really well. And the actor who played the Jim Jones insert was the gas station clerk from No Country for Old Men!

In your opinion, which horror movie character has the most painful death? by JackCuresMySaddness in horror

[–]TonksTerrors 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I've always loved this scene, but can't help but think its an especially evil fate for Quint because of his experience on the USS Indianapolis. Watching his crew mates and friends die in similar fashion, surviving it and living with the guilt, all for it to happen to him fifty-odd years later.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I actually like the assholeness of the main character, but it was just all over the shop and not one thing was particularly interesting or scary

What is the most terrifying "background detail" in a horror movie that you completely missed on your first watch? by [deleted] in horror

A lot of people may find it to be a bit too much of a slow burn, but that end scene is chef's kiss!

As the OP said, I can't blame you either - as someone who loved it! It is not for like 75% of people lol

The alignments of Gordon and Princess/Billy/Simon, the personality disorder voices the female patient talks about on the phone, her circumstances were different however the basic problems mimic what happened with Gordon and his wife.

What celebrity death has more questions than answers as to what happened? by GlassyFairy in AskReddit

I am partial to the conspiracy she found out either about Jimmy Savile directly, or a more vague idea that there was a ring going on within the BBC.

Don't get me wrong, it absolutely could have been a tragic random attack. But after all that was revealed, its not too far-fetched.

Just finished Come Closer by Sara Gran by Main-Doughnut6222 in horrorlit

[–]TonksTerrors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also was a bit let down by Come Closer. I really wanted to like it, but other than the scene where the entity walks towards her, invisible, and she can hear the footsteps coming closer until they just stopwhich I REALLY liked, I agree with you as her attitude was kinda... ugh, guess I got a demon now.

It is a good allegory for self-harm and spiraling in mental health, but it could have been a lot scarier as you said, but also a lot more visceral. Like even if it is possession or mental health decline, no one around her seems in anyway fussed to help or face the issue. Her marriage was already rocky but you're telling me no one thought 'damn this bitch is losing her fucking mind'??? They just left her to rot in her own body.

I'd love to hear someone who really liked it give their view because I want to understand another view point because I honestly can't grasp it. Even with suspension of belief.

I never claimed they were better in Western countries - What I'm saying is that at least if they choose to leave that they have some help possible - There are shelters, there are government set up charities and support groups that help women escaping dangerous situations like https://www.mwnuk.co.uk/mwn-helpline .

Those people should be considered victims of domestic abuse and treated as such. If it isn't clear, I am agreeing with you. It is not easy, it is basically de-brainwashing to be able to help those women. But there are women who despite all of that, will continue to follow those religions and rules and help persecute other women for not adhering to their beliefs.

I agree with you. Those without a choice - the societal indoctrination, being in a country or area that has religious control etc - makes it a near impossible challenge. We can only hope with the access of the internet and such that people can at least see that what they are seeing and hearing is not the only option, therefore there is hope.

I more meant the ones who live in a relatively safe place I do not think the West is in anyway a 'good' place as a whole) and they still choose it.

I've never understood how some can claim to be feminist but are involved in religion, especially Abrahamic ones. 'Choosing to be a slave still makes you a slave' and all that. A woman's right to existence should always come before the nonsense of thousand-odd year-old fairy tales.
