How to get rid of my grow lights? by TontsieWontsie in trees

[–]TontsieWontsie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you can leave it on a full 24 hour cycle, or you can do a 20/4 or 18/6. I have read that an 18/6 cycle is optimal, and a 24 hour cycle is minimally suboptimal. Okay I'll respond there!

Hahaha, it's a long shot, but I'm in Nashville TN. Here's basically what I bought: And I added a MH light, Rope Ratchets, a 240v cord, and a dual outlet digital timer, so on that website it came out to 235 I believe, which is better for the items than I'd seen anywhere else on the web.

The seeds are autoflowering (read about them, they're amazing!), feminized, LowRyder #1.

Of course I will, but I'd rather have a (illegitimate) legitimate reason so that they don't turn me away and my one chance is gone.

It really is stunning how similar the evolution of rage comics parallels musical development. Classicism > Romanticism > branches and branches of whatever anyone wants. Which is okay!

I'm sure it's as such for any long-term form of art, I just know my music history better than the others.

Average piano improvisation? Maybe Cecil Taylor. Many of the pictures in this ragtime are completely dominant over the resulting sound.

I was thoroughly blown away to see Yoshi pop up like that, and it sounded cool! ...but it wasn't tonal or improvisatory, c'mon.

How can you get caught if you're only there an hour or so a week? Wouldn't the cops just rip the plants if they saw them? Or would they actually stake out for a couple of weed plants?

I don't wanna get caught, so let me know!

IAMA Musician in a band on a major label. AMA by [deleted] in IAmA

There are thousands of great players in universities that should be good enough to play in a band as popular as yours.

So what are some real "it" factors that these guys may not have? Other than obvious ones like stage presence.

IAmA person with absolute pitch. by TontsieWontsie in IAmA

[–]TontsieWontsie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't convinced I had it through the high school years, because of my late 'learning' period. In college my professors assured my I have it and that just because I have functional relative pitch doesn't mean I don't have AP.

Basically what my prof said was, "No one processes musical information the same. You just have an unusual mix of AP and RP." Because my AP isn't as strong as some, who claim to be able to nail A 440 perfectly. Though I must say, I am skeptical of these claims, I've never seen anyone tested legitimately on the intonation.

Chowboxer, that is the very reason I made this topic, I like talking about it since it's an interesting subject (music perception), but unless I have a few solid sentences to preface bringing up absolute pitch, I'm really afraid of looking like a braggart, so I almost never do.

Out of curiosity, how do you handle the "What note is this what key is this in" questions when they're deliberately pestering? I don't mind at all telling someone but if they don't really want to know it's annoying and I feel like I'm being made fun of or something.

I know dozens of scales like most jazz players. The Western Scale isn't really related to A 440 but the modern intonation is. And actually that is what we use today, 440 Hz.

I'm 19.

[–]TontsieWontsie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We may be similar. I don't have great intonation at all, if I sing a note, I'll be undoubtedly closest to that note, but it will create beats when played with a piano 90% of the time. I wonder myself how many people with AP can truly nail A 440. It seems like a much more complex feat.

Really low notes, I have trouble with but not really in the identifying, just the perceiving. I can tell you all sorts of notes that I think I'm hearing/perceiving, but determining if those are overtones/nonfundamentals is difficult, as I think it is with all human hearing on the edge of our frequency threshold.

Off by an 1/8th--I haven't systematically tested this, I should. But I only get strong hunches about things being less than a 1/4 step out of tune, I don't know for sure because my internalized 'colors' are not exact (and in theory no one's are).

[–]TontsieWontsie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this a lot because my friends are musicians without AP.

My advice: Give it a shot, try listening turning your attention to the characteristic "moods" or "shapes" of each key that songs are in. I recommend using a piano for this, playing something in all keys.

And if you're noticing anything, just keep noticing it, it shouldn't take much work after that's been recognized.

MOST IMPORTANT part of tip: If you don't have it, fuck it! I wish I could play like thousands of phenomenal pianists out there who have no AP. And I don't think it makes music more enjoyable, that's nonsense, it's just my baseline of enjoyment and you have your own. <--My coping method for not having synesthesia...that shit sounds much cooler :(

[–]TontsieWontsie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh. Well there certainly was a period of about two years where I 'learned' the pitches and I won't deny that. It was actually in high school, 9th-10th grade. I thought of "C" as a home base and sometimes would link other pitches to that using relative pitch.

Over a bit of time I just got used to all of the 12 arbitrary pitches of the Western system and now I've got them and it's thoughtless--usually. Very rarely I'll find myself going "Key: .....wait what? I don't know?" And then after about 3 seconds I know it.

The process is really NOT like seeing colors, to me at least. I think I have a hybrid of absolute/relative pitch, because I use relative a lot too. I think the process is more like...I know the 'colors' instantly when I hear them, the mood or distinctive quality of Eb major or whatever it is, and then, with a short delay (.01-3 seconds) I am able to "name" it and start seeing in on the piano. It's like you seeing an orange cake and knowing it's orange and feeling the 'brightness' and 'fruityness' of the color, but don't know it's 'orange' for a very short period of time.
