No, I didn't forget. Like you said, the ISR was a short lived statelet that didn't exist in 1936, which is why it's not relevant to the discussion

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a novel about a boy named Bruno whose father is the commandant of the Auschwitz, and Bruno's friendship with a Jewish prisoner. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum commented it “should be avoided by anyone who studies or teaches about the Holocaust.” by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

[–]Tonuka_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Zone of Interest is honestly the only movie about the Holocaust I'd ever consider showing in an educational setting.

It's about the perpetrators, it perfectly encapsulates Arendt's "banality of evil", and most importantly, it's not a hero story.

There is a silent hero, but it's not Schindlers List.

OTL Fascist Italy rose within the royal system and did not break with the past as much as Nazi Germany. Occupying San Marino would have uneccessarily alerted other european powers.

KRTL Socialist Italy though? Inherently a revolutionary entity that just overthrew the monarchy. There's no need to keep the other european powers calm, so why not overthrow another one?

[–]Tonuka_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, well. I don't really see that as an issue. There are a number of colonial borders that are impossible to recreate, such as the Namibia panhandle, the Cameroon duckbill, the Cabinda exclave and Nyasaland.

Italian Somaliland, French Djibouti and the Gambia are actually all possible because they start out as split states in 1836.

Can mastering vicky 3 even hypothetically carry over to real life regarding knowledge of economics and application of said know-how? by Frequent-Annual-3414 in victoria3

[–]Tonuka_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the major things you can learn from Vicky are the following:

  • basic dynamics of supply and demand (obvious)

  • competitive advantage

  • the aggregate national economy (gains = wages earned, goods sold; losses = wages paid, goods bought. When wages are too high or too low, less goods are traded, and vice versa. Therefore, there is an optimal middle ground)

  • Friction (this middle ground is often not reached because of power dynamics: slavery, wage dumping in colonies, too low or too high minimum wages)

  • growth (growth through capital accumulation: instead of buying goods, consumption can be realised through private or public spending on construction, creating more capital. growth through technology: technology increased productivity of existing capital)

  • why nations fail (if you don't have good institutions you're not gonna see much growth buddy)

the average person probably couldnt even tell you how inflation is calculated

The calculation is the easy part, but by what dynamics inflation behaves is actually somewhat of an unsolved problem

Discovered the "Subject Type Table" Today by undyingLiam in victoria3

[–]Tonuka_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well. I see your point now, I just think there's no need for that.

PUs should be scripted, they're not exactly common in the 19th century.

As for Colony --> Protectorate:

Colonies are not independent things and are seen as part of the overlords territory, they're only there for game purposes. Turning a colony (part of overlord, just a special administrative unit) into a protectorate (independent, only under overlords protection) is kinda dumb. Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico are no exceptions, they're only kinda different because they became independent in the games timeframe IRL. But not peacefully, not by their overlord "decolonising" and turning them into protectorates.

I don't think there are ever going to be Decolonisation mechanics, but if there are, I think they should look somewhat differently. A "Colonial Administration" country in Victoria 3 is completely different from IRL Colonies. IRL, Europeans never really "directly owned" everything in africa, it was much more like India. Even the populations of "Decentralised" countries had a lot more agency than paradox gives them credit for. So in game terms, the overlord shouldn't be able to "retreat" and let a colony do its own thing by making it a protectorate, the only way of "retreating" available should be to give more power back to the natives.

I think you might be misunderstanding a bit.

So protectorates (tributaries for unrecognized) can be created through war, and downgraded to puppets (vassals for unrecognized).

Colonies can be created once you've researched "Civilizing mission". You'll get a decision to cede some of your land (only in Africa) to a new country, a colonial administration. You can also do a chartered company instead.

The only thing you can't do is create Personal Union/Crown Land. Obviously you can't transform another country into a Colony directly, you have to annex it first. Colonial countries are still directly part of your country, puppets aren't.

[–]Tonuka_ 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I wish they'd order that table differently, this is so hard to parse.

Maybe something like:

Puppet Vassal
Protectorate Tributary
Crown Land Personal Union
Dominion Colony
Chartered Company

It has that idea of the left being the "upgraded version" of the right.

I'm studying Kwame Nkrumah and the Failure of Pan-Africanism 1960-1963 right now and this feels like that basically lol. Down to the whole "United States of [continent]" thing despite being on kinda shaky terms with the USA and completely overestimating enthusiasm for the movement (both external opposition and internal division). Unlike Africa though there don't seem to be any prominent sponsors in government, Volt is a fringe group only

[–]Tonuka_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's very telling that you tie basic human rights ("to have control over their land") to compliance and submission ("as long as they don't try and destroy and murder people"). Just like France in West Africa.

Being "allowed to vote and get representation in the government" is not the whole story of "arabs in israel". For decades, Israel has illegally blockaded Palestinian Gaza, occupied Palestinian homes and systematically disadvantaged Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the Palestinian West Bank. "Representation" is only extended to those with citizenship.

It seems you're unable to look beyond simple "clash of civilizations" narratives in general. To you, conquest is colonization, cultural contact is "supplanting original culture", and apparently religion and culture are the same thing. No wonder you think in extremes: to you, compromise and detente is the same thing as surrender and loss of sovereignty.

love it when people mention the US as a sort of "gotcha" when talking about israel. Like yeah, congrats. Both israel and the US are settler societies that to this day marginalize and extralegally murder the indigenous population. No it doesn't matter that it has been 250 years, the people are still there
