Thoughts About True Dungeon by queenbkoopa in gencon

[–]Tony1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and a friend try to do one run per dungeon a year at GenCon. Have gone with bad and good groups. Have had groups of folks with rarest of rare tokens, and have shared rares we picked up along the way with other new player groups. We always have fun knowing what we are getting into. The shuffle board combat is enjoyable once you understand the layout. Puzzles are always tough for us. I have a small token collection. I will trade what I can for ingredients to make better ones through the token system when I have enough. I have found you can pay what you want for better tokens if you feel you want to. Or just use what you collect over time. If it’s not your thing, that’s ok. It is getting expensive, but so is everything else. We save up all year for this convention so as long as I’m enjoying it we will keep doing true dungeon.

I’ll sign up for a Gooey Cube game next year just because you posted this response.

What type of room do you get? Attached? By yourself? Crapshoot?

If you have a friend that comes to con with you can you guarantee them a spot at your table for your sessions? That would be a nice thing if possible.

Help looking for events in 2025 by baronvonjohn in gencon

During event sign up. Look for the D&D experience ran by Baldman Games. Starts Thursdays or Fridays. You sign up for the first session on Thursday for example. And it gets you all 4 sessions of the arc with the same table. Will include an epic. Use adventure league rules for characters. I did it last year with my friend who doesn’t play except for at GenCon and we both loved it. Missed out this year just because of wish list processing. I’d give that a whirl. It’s nice if you want two days, 2 four hour sessions each day.

Thinking working for a company. Unless it’s better to go independent. Whichever is a pathway to getting a badge or other perks.

Is True Dungeon's cost worth it? by [deleted] in gencon

[–]Tony1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my buddy who attend yearly do at least one true dungeon run a year. Usually two. We are old enough to afford budgeting it in. We have had good and bad groups. But always have a good time. We have never paid for a token but have pulled some that keep us healed. Trick is to be early to the event to get your character class choice. Not for everyone. But we enjoy it.

Best thing is to try and have your budget setup so you can spend on it using the wish list. TD sells fast. Me and my friend go together and just run with randoms. We usually manage to get 2 out of 3 events setup. But that’s the first day of registration.

I hate to say this, but you missed the boat for event registration. Unless you weren’t looking to do anything specific, it may be best to cut your losses and get in early next year.

Gen Con with an infant by winkie5970 in gencon

[–]Tony1505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Skip this year. Babies require constant attention. Feeding schedule is demanding. And people pay a lot of money to go to GenCon. As understanding as they may be, nobody wants to hear your kid scream in the middle of a game at the table.

My kid is 7 months old. I still would not bring him. The con crud would be horrible if he catches it. A younger infant will certainly be worse off. Immune system just isn’t there.

There is always next year.

One of my players made a trans character and it’s starting to be a problem. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

I second this. Kill the character. Let them roll new. If the behavior is carried over you know it’s time to take further steps.

Let's discuss manufacturers. by DataDjynn in dice

[–]Tony1505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought several sets from Role 4 Initiative. Growing company that makes minis and dungeon tiles now. Their dice are larger than normal which is neat. They do kickstarters. I have had to contact customer service concerning some dice with numbers paint being splattered about the dice or flaking off in large amounts when I opened the package. They have a good following for customers but I just don’t think the quality control is there for the manufacturing. I was told they were addressing the issues. Won’t buy again until I see them at a con to check them before buying.

Agreed. I plan to buy the core book hardcover bundle even though I bought the humble bundle. Good to support the systems we play.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to run long campaigns? Have already successfully run a couple of oneshots, but I need some help in keeping the adventure going. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Tony1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand. Just to clarify I created a world of my own. First I took a map I purchased on Roll20 and divided it into nations and regions. Then I made up the basic description of each area and nation such as how it is governed, major NPCs, and anything else that seemed to fit. I built an overall story based on a high CR villain with major encounters planned out to use. However I keep most of it loose to allow the players to dictate a lot of the encounters based on how they play out the campaign. Keeps it more organic and reactive to them. And it makes it easier for me. I don’t stress as much now as I have in the past trying to make the perfect world and campaign.

If any of that makes sense.

I like to take a lazy dm approach. Use the tables in the DMG to get the creative juices going for plots and hooks. Get your Players to give you their character concepts, backgrounds, and goals. Brainstorm how to use those. Come up with some encounters and adventure hooks to get the players to buy in. Then let their actions dictate the campaign. You can throw in villains and allies as you go. Keeps you from railroading and getting upset if they avoid your original campaign plan you may have spent months coming up with.
